The “Catalyst”
Recently, I heard a speaker
mention that “traditional”
churches are “catalyzed” by
worship. His meaning was that
we focus everything on wor-
ship. When we invite someone
who is lost, we invite him or
her to worship. When we think
about evangelism, we start with
how much we are giving in
worship and we hope our mis-
sionaries begin building pro-
jects for houses of worship.
Our major building projects
are nearly always “worship cen-
ters.”
I listened attentively to his
nearly two-hour presentation
and was challenged by some
things he stated. However, I

disagree with his overall prem-
ise. We love worship. As Chris-
tians, we should even desire to
worship God. We want others
to learn how to worship as well.
But we are not “catalyzed” by
worship.
We are catalyzed by Christ! If
He is not raised from the dead,
then there is no reason to do
anything we do as His people
(cf. 1 Corinthians 15:19), includ-
ing worship.
Think about it this way:
 Christ, and His overcoming
of death, is the reason we
worship. Thus, we sing,

“We praise Thee, O God,
for the Son of Thy
love” (emphasis added). It is
the sacrifice of Christ that
brings us together in com-
munion each week, as well.
 When we send missionar-
ies, we pray not for worship,
but that our missionaries
will bring more people to
Jesus Christ.
 When we reach out to our
neighbors and loved ones,
we may invite them to wor-
ship, but we are praying
they come to Christ.
As a congregation, we need to
make sure Christ is the central
figure of all we do. He is our
catalyst.
