INTRODUCTION
Directional drilling is the science and art of
deviating a wellbore along a planned course to
a subsurface target whose location is a given
lateral distance and direction from the vertical.
Today, it is more science than an art.!!!
APPLICATIONS
1. Sidetracking is the result of having
to avoid materials which cannot be
retrieved from the well, such as:
tools, drillpipes, drill collar, scrap
metal etc.
Fig. 5: Sidetracking
APPLICATIONS CONTD.
3. This involves drilling multiple wells
from a single location especially
offshore, where it is easier to
access a range of wells from one
location.
APPLICATIONS CONTD.
5. The well is intentionally deviated
around the fault plane to avoid
excessive mud loss and any possible
damage to the casing due to
instability
APPLICATIONS CONTD.
7. This is normally used extensively to
install infrastructure such as: oil, gas,
and water pipelines or power
cables running underground.
SUMMARY
Now, discuss (in 5 minutes) with the person next to you the following:
Describe the types of directional wells
Sketch and label the types of directional wells
Explain the reasons we drill directionally
