Drug abuse feeds child neglect

planet to live on, the other
essential resource to human-
ity’s future is our children.
Many young ones are at
some time subjected to abuse
or neglect. Pinwheels are
cropping up around the Tri-
County to bring awareness
to the issue.
April is Child Abuse and
Neglect Prevention Month;
Pinwheels for Prevention is
spearheaded by Children’s
Services, Job and Family
Services and the Partnership
for Violence-free Families.
Officials say drug abuse
is a key contributor to the
County Children’s Services.
She says the problem is
vast and often involves
babies.
“The main problem we’re
seeing in Van Wert County
is substance abuse affect-
ing children in the form of
the newest trends that we’re
really struggling with,”
she said. “Parents who are
impaired by drugs and alco-
hol have impaired judgment.
Their financial resources
are becoming impaired, so
they’re selling drugs to con-
tinue their habit. This expos-

There are 106 pinwheels
at the courthouse, repre-
senting each case Van Wert
County officials investigat-
ed in 2009. Honigford said
the number of children is
not tracked in her county,
nor does the number of pin-
wheels represent the number
of reports that come in.
In Allen County, there are
655 pinwheels at the YWCA.
A startling number of those
cases include the presence of
substance abuse.
“We initiated 655 new
investigations in 2009 that
involved 1,572 children
and that was up 15 percent
from 2008. We were already
involved with 2,209 children
when the year began,” said

cue crews to abandon the
search Thursday for four
coal miners missing since
an explosion killed 25 col-
leagues in the worst U.S.
mining disaster in more than
two decades.
Rescuers had been work-

in the area they needed to
search.
“We think they are in
danger and that’s the whole
intent of evacuating them
from the mine,” said Kevin
Stricklin of the Mine Health
and Safety Administration.
The rescuers made it to
within about 1,000 feet of an
airtight chamber with four
days worth of food, water and
oxygen where they hoped the
miners might have sought
refuge. They did not make it
far enough to see the bodies
of the dead or determine if
anyone had made it to the
chamber.
Stricklin acknowledged
the evacuation was a setback,
but said he hoped crews
would be able to get back
in within a few hours after
a bigger hole was drilled to
allow fresh air into the mine.
He said the families of the
dead and missing understood
the need to pull rescuers out.
“It’s a roller coaster for
these people,” Stricklin said.
“It’s very emotional. You can
only imagine what it would
be like.”
Rescuers had already had
to wait to enter the mine until
crews drilled holes deep into
the earth to ventilate lethal
carbon monoxide and highly
explosive hydrogen as well
as methane gas, which has
been blamed for the explo-
sion. The air quality was
deemed safe enough early
in the day for four teams of
eight members each to go
on what officials were still
calling a rescue mission, but
later tests showed the air was
too dangerous to continue.
Once inside, rescuers had
to walk through an area offi-
cials have described as strewn
with bodies, twisted railroad
track, shattered concrete
block walls and vast amounts
of dust. Each team member
was wearing 30 pounds of
breathing equipment, lugging
first-aid equipment and try-
ing to see through total dark-
ness with only a cap lamp to
light the way.
Officials and townsfolk
alike acknowledged they
didn’t expect to find any of
the four missing miners alive
more than two days after the
massive explosion. Poisonous
gases have filled the under-
ground tunnels since Monday
afternoon’s blast.
“This was a scenario that
we didn’t want,” Gov. Joe
Manchin said as he briefed
reporters about the evacu-
ations. Families of those
still in the mine continued
to arrive at a training center
there to await word of their
fate, and Manchin estimated
that perhaps 100 have gath-
ered so far.

and Corolla.
As Toyota deals with a
spate of recalls, the e-mail
reveals serious concerns with-
in the Japanese company’s
public relations leadership
that it wasn’t dealing with the

lion vehicles to replace gas
pedals that could get stuck in

15 teams. The Delphos FFA team consisted of Chad Hoersten, Braytan Kruse, and John
Lambert. The team had to use various skills like welding, acetylene welding, valve grind-
ing, and many more skills. They also had to identify a plethora of tools, fasteners, seals,
and bearings. The team had to cut tubing, flare tubing, and bend tubing. The students
tested electrical systems and components. They test injectors and adjusted injectors in a
diesel engine. They used U.S. and metric units to measure crankshaft endplay and cylin-
der bore in an engine. They worked on hydraulics during the contest. The team identified
different fuels, filters, lubricants, and coolants. They identified faulty parts to an engine.
They also took a written test on safety. Braytan placed first in the contest out of 45 stu-
dents. They will compete in the state contest on Friday, April 9.

DENVER — Qatar’s U.S. ambassador defend-
ed an envoy whom authorities say grabbed a sur-
reptitious smoke in a jetliner’s bathroom, sparking
a bomb scare and widespread alert that sent jet
fighters scrambling to intercept the Denver-bound
flight.
But no explosives were found and authorities
speaking on condition of anonymity said they
don’t think he was trying to hurt anyone during
Wednesday’s scare and he will not be criminally
charged.

The ambassador did not mention the diplomat
by name, but an Arab envoy briefed on the matter
identified him as Mohammed Al-Madadi of Qatar,
an oil-rich Middle East nation and close U.S. ally.
Wednesday’s scare came three months after
the attempted terror attack on Christmas Day
when a Nigerian man tried to blow up a Detroit-
bound airliner. Since then, law enforcement, flight
crews and passengers have been on high alert for
suspicious activity on airplanes. The scare exposed
major holes in the country’s national security and
prompted immediate changes in terror-screening
policies.
Two law enforcement officials said investiga-
tors were told the man was asked about the smell
of smoke in the bathroom and he made a joke that
he had been trying to light his shoes — an appar-
ent reference to the 2001 so-called “shoe bomber”

Officials said air marshals aboard the flight
restrained the man and he was questioned. The
plane landed safely as military jets were scram-
bled.
The envoy was interviewed for several hours
by investigators. But authorities delcined to pro-
vide any details about him or his status, and his
whereabouts weren’t publicly known early today.
The Boeing 757 was carrying 157 passengers
and six crew members, United Airlines spokes-
man Michael Trevino said. It left Reagan National
Airport at 5:19 p.m. EDT and landed at Denver
International Airport at 7 p.m. MDT.
The flight crew radioed air traffic control to ask
that the flight be met on the ground by law enforce-
ment, Trevino said.
Dave Klaversma, 55, of Parker, Colo., said his
wife, Laura, was sitting behind the man in the first-
class section of the plane. She said she saw him go
into the bathroom and that moments later he said
something to the flight crew. After that, two U.S.
marshals in first class apprehended the man and sat

and third place, Kaleb Helms. Klaversma said his wife told him it all hap-
pened very quietly and that “there was no hysteria,
no struggle, nothing.”
Passenger Mei Turcotte, 26, of Kalispell,
Mont., told The Associated Press she smelled
smoke about an hour into the flight. She said she
later looked out the window and saw two jets fly-
ing alongside the plane.
The Transportation Security Administration
confirmed that federal air marshals responded to
a passenger “causing a disturbance onboard the
aircraft,” but didn’t elaborate.
“Law enforcement and TSA responded to
the scene and the passenger is currently being
interviewed by law enforcement,” TSA said late
Wednesday in a statement. “All steps are being
taken to ensure the safety of the traveling public.”
Another passenger, 61-year-old Scott Smith
of Laramie, Wyo., said he was seated toward the
middle of the plane and didn’t notice any distur-
bance during the flight.
However, he said the approach into Denver
was “unusual.”
“We came in rather fast, and we were flying
low for a long period of time,” Smith, a com-
puter programmer, told reporters by cell phone.
“I’ve never seen a jetliner do that. There were no
announcements, nothing about your carryon bags
or tray tables.”
Once on the ground, Smith said, the pilot even-
tually announced that “we have a situation here on
the plane.”
Passengers say they were kept on the plane for
nearly an hour after it landed and then were ques-
tioned by officials. Many were still trickling into
the baggage area five hours after the plane landed.
Melissa Nitsch of Washington, D.C., said
everyone aboard was questioned by the FBI before
being released. Agents asked if they’d witnessed
anything and for basic personal information.
“Everyone is pretty happy this situation is
over,” Nitsch said. “If you have to be stuck in a
situation like this, it pretty much went perfectly.”
DIA spokesman Jeff Green said the airport
remained open during the incident, and no flights
were delayed or canceled.
President Barack Obama was briefed about
the incident aboard Air Force One by National
Security Adviser Gen. Jim Jones and National
Security Chief of Staff Denis McDonough shortly
before 9 p.m. EDT, said a White House official,
who spoke on the condition of anonymity to dis-
cuss an ongoing investigation. The president is
traveling to Prague, where he’ll sign a nuclear arms
treaty with Russia today.
The latest edition of department’s Diplomatic
List, a registry of foreign diplomats working in the
United States, identifies a man named Mohammed
Yaaqob Y.M. Al-Madadi as the third secretary
for the Qatari Embassy in Washington. Third
secretary is a relatively low-ranking position at any
diplomatic post and it was not immediately clear
what his responsibilities would have been.
A senior State Department official said there
would be “consequences, diplomatic and other-
wise” if he had committed a crime.
Foreign diplomats in the United States, like
American diplomats posted abroad, have broad
immunity from prosecution. The official said
if the man’s identity as a Qatari diplomat was
confirmed and if it was found that he may have
committed a crime, U.S. authorities would have
to decide whether to ask Qatar to waive his
diplomatic immunity so he could be charged
and tried. Qatar could decline, the official said,
and the man would likely be expelled from the
United States.

has been in Washington since at least 2007,
