Toyota Car Dealership (Oviedo Spain)

Background
Like many corporations, improving profitability by reducing
operating costs is a key objective at Toyota. When the
Toyota dealership in Ovideo Spain discovered this objec-
tive could be achieved, while simultaneously reducing
their carbon footprint through the use of on-site solar, they
were intrigued. This particular facility features large glass
sections that showcase their cars, rendering a traditional
SolarWall system (which typically goes on the south wall)
unfeasible. SolarWall Europe Sarl. of France, working with
the local Spanish SolarWall dealer, recommended the
new modular rooftop SolarDuct® solar air heating system.
The SolarDuct® system has an impressive payback and
flexible building-integration options, which made it an ex-
cellent fit for the dealership.
Solution
The SolarDuct® is a rooftop variation of the traditional So-
larWall® technology. The roof-mounted SolarDuct® sys-
tem is perfect for applications where there is insufficient
wall space, or there are specific aesthetic considerations
associated with the building façade. With a roof-mounted
system, the SolarDuct® units are practically invisible from
the ground, can be positioned on the roof to maximize the
solar gain, and minimize the ducting to the rooftop air han-
dling units.
The SolarDuct® system works the same as the award
winning SolarWall technology. The sun heats the surface
of the system, which forms a heat boundary layer. The
heat is drawn in through tiny perforations in the black
metal panels of the SolarDuct® system, and is ducted into
the existing HVAC system; thus pre-heating the fresh ven-
tilation air.
The installation for the Toyota dealership in Ovideo Spain
is comprised of 30 SolarDuct® modules, organized in six
rows, five modules per row. The total collector area is
66m2 (710 ft2), and is designed to heat 4000m3/h with a
flow rate of 61m3/h/m2 and has an average temperature
rise of 10°C.
Results
The SolarDuct® system is estimated to reduce GHGs by
4.6 tons of CO2 each year, and deliver 60 GJ of renewable
energy annually. Oviedo is a temperate climate, requiring
some heating for about 7 months of the year.
