poverty stricken homes? Are you able to reach each of these learners in this
classroom in order for them to reach their full potential? Teaching with
Poverty in Mind is an informational text written by veteran educator and
brain expert, Eric Jensen. In the text, Jensen examines how poverty acts as a
learning barrier and how educators should address these issues.

Narration: In the classroom, there is an extreme difference between the brain

functioning of affluent students and students of lower socioeconomic
statuses (SES). This difference includes lacking social skills, linguistic
abilities and overall intelligence due to the lack of resources had by those
students from lower socioeconomic statuses. Students of lower SES also
come with an increased amount of stress. This stress stems from a lack of
nurturing at home. The classrooms atmosphere must be tolerable and
inclusive of all students from all backgrounds in order for students to feel at
home in the school environment.

Narration: To circumvent the sometimes apparent disconnect, teachers must

make a cognizant effort to learn their students inside and outside of the
classroom. This is done by meeting parents, visiting the neighborhoods
surrounding the schools, and actively supporting students in any
extracurricular activities in which they participate. This shows the students
that their teachers have an interest in their achievements in the classroom
and possess a genuine care and concern for their well-being, development,
and accolades.

There is only so much that can be done during an eight hour school day. The
rest has to happen at home. In the same respect, teachers must contact
parents and let them know these things because it takes more than just
school or home to make sure our underserved students excelit takes a
combination of both. Lastly, teachers must be strong-willed and purposeful.
Our students need us more than many of my colleagues realize. We hold the
ability to influence students to want more than what they see around them.

well-off peers on standardized tests due to academic achievements. This is
just a trend, which means this facet can be reversed if these students are
being fostered in a positive manner. SHARE is an acronym that Jensen
describes as being effective and promising in the betterment of students of
lower SES. Support of the whole child, Hard data, Accountability,
Relationship building, and an Enrichment mindset are all factors necessary to
achieve this achievable task.
