Aim
To study the relationship between solubility
product of a salt and its molecular mass.

Apparatus required
(1) Beaker
(2) Funnel
(3) Filter paper
(4) China dish
(5) Weight box
(6) Glass rod
(7) Measuring cylinder

Chemicals Required
(1) NaCl
(2) CuSO4
(3) K2Cr2O7
(4) Distilled water

Introduction
If a lump of sodium chloride (table salt) is dropped into
beaker containing water, it disappears gradually. Sodium
chloride dissolves in water but we cannot see the dissolved
salt. We can show its presence in the solution by chemical
tests. The molecules of salt get mixed up with the molecules
of water forming homogenous mixture i.e., solution. The
same degree of saltiness is found in all part of the mixture.
More salt added will also dissolves. If the process adding salt
with constant stirring is continued, a limit is reached where
no more salt will dissolve. Some of it will remain
undissolved. The solution so formed is called a saturated
solution i.e., a solution in which more of solute cannot be
dissolved at a given temperature. Solubility is defined as the
amount of substance dissolved in 100gm of the solvent so as
to give a saturated solution at a particular temperature. It
depends upon the following factors:(1) Nature of solute
(2) Nature of solvent
(3) temperature

Some substance dissolves readily in water while some others

are almost insoluble. Substances which are insoluble in
water dissolve in some other solvents. Thus, different
substance differs greatly in their solubility behaviors.

(a) Solubility of a salt depends on its molecular mass.

(b) Solubility product is inversely proportional to
molecular mass of the solute.

Theory
Solubility:Solubility is the property of a solid, liquid,
or gaseous chemical
substance called solute to dissolve in a solid, liquid, or
gaseous solvent to form a homogeneous solution of the
solute in the solvent. The solubility of a substance
fundamentally depends on the physical and chemical
properties of the solute and solvent as well as on
temperature, pressure and the pH of the solution. The
extent of the solubility of a substance in a specific
solvent is measured as the saturation concentration,
where adding more solute does not increase the
concentration of the solution and begin to precipitate
the excess amount of solute.

(a) Preparing a saturated solution

(i)

(ii)

Using a measuring cylinder take 20-30 cm3 of distilled water in a

clean beaker. To this, add a small amount of powdered sodium
chloride and stir it vigorously and thoroughly with a clean glass
rod. After this portion of salt dissolves completely, add some more
salt and stir the solution thoroughly. Continue adding the
powdered salt in small amounts with constant stirring till a small
amount remains in beaker and does not dissolve further. Stirring
of the solution with the last portion of the inorganic salt is usually
carried out for 5-10 minutes.
Weigh a clean and dry china dish. Let its mass be w gm

(b) Separation of solution from the undissolved salt

Filter the solution using a funnel with a filter paper cone and
collect the filtrate in a already weighed china dish. Weigh the
china dish along with the filtrate let its mass be w1 gm.
Note down the temperature of the solution with a thermometer.
Next heat the china dish containing the filtrate on a sunbath. Take
care that the solution does not spurt out. Water evaporates and
the volume of the solution goes on decreasing. When it is about 4-5
cm3 use low flame. Continue slow heating till there is no moisture
left behind.
Cool the china dish and weigh it with dry salt.
Heat the solution again for 5 minutes. Cool and weigh it again.
Repeat 3-4 times till a constant mass is obtained.

Calculations
NaCl Mass of dry salt = w2w gm = 4.0g
Mass of water evaporated = w1 w2 gm = 11.5g
13

Solubility = (w2 w / w1 w2) 100

= 34.78g per 100g water
Solubility product = solubility 10 / Mol. mass = 5.94 mol/liter

CuSO4 Mass of dry salt = w2w gm = 1.5g

Mass of water evaporated = w1 w2 gm = 2.5g
Solubility = (w2 w / w1 w2) 100
= 60g per 100g water
Solubility product = solubility 10 / Mol. mass = 3.76 mol/liter

K2Cr2O7
Mass of dry salt = w2w gm = 2.0g
Mass of water evaporated = w1 w2 gm = 3.5g
Solubility = (w2 w / w1 w2) 100
= 57.14g per 100g water
Solubility product = solubility 10 / Mol. mass = 1.94 mol/liter

Result
NaCl

Solubility product = 5.94 mol/liter

CuSO4
Solubility product = 3.76 mol/liter

K2Cr2O7
Solubility product = 1.94 mol/liter
