scholarship, vocal competition
Scholarship contest
NEW LONDON, Conn.
- Write an essay, short
story, poem, play, movie
script or Novella about
the
African-American
experience in the maritime world for the chance
to win a $1,000 New
London Maritime Society
scholarship!
The Reid MacCluggage
Black Maritime History
Award was established
to foster an awareness of
the experience of AfricanAmericans in the context
of maritime history. It
honors the commitment
of Reid MacCluggage, the
editor and publisher of
The Day newspaper from
1984-2001, to the development of multicultural
awareness and excellent
writing skills in students.
You must be a junior or
senior in good standing
at one of the following
high schools to qualify:
East Lyme, Grasso Tech.,

Fishers Island, Fitch,


Griswold, Ledyard, LymeOld Lyme, Montville,
New
London,
NFA,
Norwich Regional Tech.,
St. Bernards, Stonington,
Williams
School,
Waterford or Wheeler.
You may enter an original essay, short story,
novella, play, movie
script or poem based on
the theme: the AfricanAmerican
experience
in the maritime world.
There are no restrictions
on the length or scope
of your piece, but all
entries must be typed and
include a complete list
of all primary and secondary research sources.
Additionally, each entry
must be accompanied
by a cover page, stating the students name,
address and telephone
number, as well as the
name of the high school
he or she attends, And a

brief abstract describing


the intent/content of the
piece.
All entries must be
received at the Custom
House Maritime Museum,
located at 150 Bank Street
in New London, by 5
p.m., Feb. 29.
If you mail your entry,
it must be postmarked no
later than Feb. 29.
Following review by
a panel of distinguished
judges from the community, a scholarship of
$1,000 will be awarded
for the most outstanding
entry, and a scholarship of
$500 for second place. The
winners will be contacted
directly, and will receive
the awards at his or her
high school awards night.

MYSTIC, Conn. Applications are now being


accepted for the 10th annual Voices For Hope vocal
competition scholarship
for New England vocalists
ages 11-19, to benefit social
service programs providing
food and shelter to those in
need through Local United
Network to Combat Hunger
(LUNCH).
Voices For Hope, combining music and community outreach, gives aspiring vocalists an opportunity
to use their talent and love
of singing to benefit those
in need, while also giving
themselves an opportunity
to win a $500 scholarship
and professional performance and recording opportunities. To date, participants
have hailed from six states
including winners from
Connecticut, Massachusetts,
and Rhode Island.
The deadline for early submissions is March 15,and
the finaldeadline is April 15.
The finalists will audition

live in front of a panel of


music industry professionals,and perform at
the annualHarry Chapin
Tribute Concertto be held
on April 30 in Mystic.
Winners receive a $500
scholarship, featured performance opportunities and a
professional recording to be
released worldwide. Winners
from prior years have performed at the Bushnell, the
Shubert Theater,the Granite
Theater,the University
of Hartford, with professionals such as Melba
Moore,Diana DeGarmo,
the Chapin Family, and
Patti Austin.They have also
released professional recordings through LUNCH to benefit local nonprofit agencies.
LUNCH, now celebrating
its 25thyear,uses the power
of popular music to produce
positive social action and
sponsors this event not only
to support important social
services, but also to show
kids that through their time
and talent, they can make

a difference in the lives of


others.

LUNCH was founded in1989 by Grammywinning songwriter Bill
Pere, who is also one of
Connecticuts

State Troubadours. He has
appeared on a Cheerios

Music Industry by Music
Connection Magazine.
LUNCH has involved
more than 3,000 kids in
hundreds of benefit performances over the last 20
years, raising more than
$1,000,000 for social service
programs.

Weekend movie matinee
The February movie
is based on the books of
R.L. Stine, and will be
shown Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.
Zach reluctantly moves
from New York City to the
quiet town of Madison,
Del., where he quickly
realizes that his reclusive
new neighbor is in fact
the horror author of the
Goosebumps series.
Zach learns Stines identity when he is drawn to the
writers daughter Hannah,
but soon discovers the dangerous secret inside their
home - the creatures from
Stines famous stories are
real, and are kept locked
away inside their original

manuscripts. After an accident frees the monsters,


Zach, Hannah, and their
nerdy pal Champ must
work together with Stine
to save their town from
destruction.
This film runs for 103
minutes, and is rated PG for
scary and intense creature

Crafting for a Cause
Join the Junior Friends of
the Groton Public Library,
Feb. 2 at 3:30 p.m., as we
weave heart-shaped placemats for residents of nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. An afternoon
snack will be provided.
Family Film
& Fundraiser!
Join the Junior Friends
of the Groton Public Library
as they present the family-friendly film about an

animated sheep, Feb. 13 at


2:30 p.m.
Refreshments will be for
sale by the Junior Friends
and the proceeds will be
used to fund the groups
many community-service
projects. This film is rated
PG and runs for approximately 85 minutes.

Roll up your sleeves

Junior Friends are hosting their monthly Library
Helper Day, Feb. 25 at
6 p.m. During this busy
hour, the Junior Friends
will assist library staff in a
variety of projects including preparing craft and
program materials, dusting and light cleaning,
straightening shelves,
special event preparation,
and recycling.
