THE ROLE OF EDUCATION FOR PEACE IN COLOMBIA Peace is a word that is uttered almost as frequently as truth, beauty, and love. It may be just as elusive to define as these other virtues. Common synonyms for peace include amity, friendship, harmony, concord, tranquility, repose, quiescence, truce, pacification, and neutrality. Likewise, the peacemaker is the pacifier, mediator, intermediary, and intercessor. While some of these descriptions are appropriate, they are still quite limited in describing both the nature of peace and the role of the peacemaker. Any attempt to articulate the nature of peace and peacemaking, therefore, must address those conditions which are favorable to their emergence. Freedom, human rights, and justice are among such prerequisites. Also included are proactive strategies such as conflict resolution, nonviolent action, community building, and democratization of authority. The peace process additionally must acknowledge and contend with its alternative war because of the high value status of violence. For example, while war has brought out the worst kind of behavior in humans, it has also brought out some of the best. Aside from relieving boredom and monotony, war has been shown to spawn self-sacrifice, loyalty, honor, heroism, and courage. Also, war has helped to bring about significant social changes such as racial and sexual integration, freedom, democracy and a sense of national pride. Because of its apparent utilitarian value and its ability to enervate, violence has been solidly embedded in the national psyche of many countries. As a result, its elimination will be no easy feat1. Colombia is a democratic country, located in South America, which has a constitution in which is written the laws for compliance. It has been a country with great violence over the years by social inequalities, disrespect, intolerance and other factors that cause people to perform acts that harm his neighbor with an educational model resembles that of the Netherlands, this model does not adapt it to needs of country to become in a tool that the Colombian State should be used to mitigate 1 LEO R. this violence and achieve peace, because having access to a school,
college or university, the person can be formed not only in knowledge as well as person. For example, there are 12,600 schools of which 8600 are public, there are 32 universities. Public schools graduate more than seventy percent of the total annual graduates. However, only a tiny fraction of these young people seem judged fit to aspire to join the largest and most prestigious public university in the country. To make matters worse, the few who dare play with downside: while four out of every 100 graduates of public schools that were submitted to the National were admitted, eight out of 100 graduates of private schools they succeeded. Also the model implement has to adapt to needs of country considering the problems and look for solutions to improve without to omit the love and human affect. Currently there is a Peace Process in which the Colombian government is negotiating with the FARC in Havana- Cuba, as a focal point for the dialogues to achieve total demobilization and not more deaths, however the events that happened in the Cauca shows there is disagreement with some members of the FARC, because of they feel violated if they return to society, because as mentioned earlier, few opportunities that the state provides people with their studies, but neither is an excuse for killing innocent people. The lack of education not only in colleges or schools, but in homes where the family is the basis of the core of society, makes evident all currently living Colombia, because if there is a good education by parents and continue with school facilities in the state provides, not as background but as paramount, did not exist in such greater magnitude. The people are different, think different, and fight for what you always want and but not pass over each other, and if home values are strengthen with the education, giving more opportunities for it to enter Schools and universities things would be much better.
