INTRODUCTION

The Educational Plant Tour of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University was on
November 23 27, 2015. The educational tour has the following objectives:
A. To pave way in developing and uplifting the educational awareness of the graduating
engineering students with regards to the actual operation and maintenance of existing
power plants and production plants in the Philippines.
B. To have an actual view and to learn the different processes and sources involved in
the production of power and energy in a power plant.
C. To upgrade the knowledge of students in mechanical engineering concepts.
The plant tour specifically wants the students not only to learn the theories about power
and industrial plants, but also wants students to see the actual equipments and machineries used
in the plants. Students can also learn how the machineries work and it will upgrade their
knowledge about mechanical engineering concepts. The students can be more aware about when
they will have their own job because of the experience in the plant tour.
When the students will apply a job in the power plants in the future, they know some
processes involved in the power plant and that is an advantage when the interview comes. They
have advantage because of the experience seeing the machineries work actually in the plant.
The students can also ask questions in the mechanical engineers working in the power
plant if they are confused about something regarding in its operation and that will give way to
students to have more knowledge. The engineers can also teach students more concepts and
theories that is not included in the syllabus in the school. The students can also know the future
employment in the industrial and power plants and will have more options regarding future
employment. They can decide if they will apply in a certain plant after seeing its operation ,
processes , equipment, etc.
That is a big help for the mechanical engineering students in DMMMSU MLUC. They
will have more ideas about mechanical engineering and the operation of power plants.
The night before the educational tour

It was November 22, 2015. We have an 8am-7pm Sunday class. Our instructor knows
that we have an educational tour coming up and he dismissed us early to prepare for the 5-day
and 4-night tour. It was about 9pm when some students arrive in the school to have a comfortable
seat in the bus, though the departure for Tarlac City is at 3am. More students arrive before
midnight and it was almost complete moments after midnight.

We have 2 buses and a van prepared for the plant tour. The instructors checked us all
before departure. The departure time was at 3am. The GGTM travel tours that is in charge for the
travel tours was very thoughtful to us students. They ask us if there is something wrong with us
and told us stories and have games so that we will not be bored during the trip.
FIRST DAY (November 23, 2015)
Arrival at Jollibee Tarlac for breakfast
At 5:30 am, we arrive at Tarlac for the breakfast at Jollibee. We waited a little moment
before having a breakfast. The breakfast gave us strength for the whole day.

This picture was taken at Jollibee, Tarlac City after the breakfast and before the departure
for the first itinerary at Tarlac Power Corporation.

Arrival at Tarlac Power Corporation (First Itinerary)

Before our arrival at Tarlac Power Corporation, we were lost for a moment because we
dont exactly know the exact location of the power plant. We almost reach the end of the road at
the Tarlac and have a little stop over. We went back to the city to ask people the location of the
power plant and we went straight to the power plant. We were late in the arrival of the plant
because we got lost. After the arrival, the engineers in the plant welcomed us warmly.
After a little chat with the instructors, we were divided in two groups because there are 2
sections. The engineer toured us to the facility of the plant.

In the photo above, students were listening and taking notes to the engineers
discussion about their facilities and equipment. After a little discussion about the power plant, the
engineer toured us to the equipment of the plant and discussed again the capacity of their
machineries and how it works. The students were actively listening and taking notes to the
engineers discussion regarding its facilities.

In the photo above, the engineer were touring us to the plant. In the right side of the
photo, HFO means heavy fuel oil. It is the storage of the fuel used in the diesel power plant. It is
also called day tank

In the photo above, students were at the room of the diesel engines operating at very high level
sound emission so we were not that long in that place. The plant is operating at 3 units and have
a total capacity of 18600 kW or 18.6 MW.

The photo above is the students near the pumps that pumps the fuel, lubricating oil to
their indicated day tanks.
After the tour, the engineers in the plant led us to the control room of the plant and
discussed the operation of the machineries of the plant. In there, we have received a snack from
the people in the power plant as being grateful for choosing them one of the power plant to visit
in the educational tour. The snack was a tetra pack juice and a biscuit. After the snack, we went
back to our respective and get ready for the departure for Subic.
Comments/Suggestions:
Overall, the tour in the Tarlac Power Corporation was good. I learned a lot about
the operation of a diesel power plant and how it works. I saw the equipment used in the plant
actually like the cooling towers, day tanks, pumps, etc. My suggestion is that they should have
more tour guides during the tour because in the tour, some of the students didnt hear what the
engineer is telling because the ratio of the tour guide to student is high. That must be 1:5 ratio so
that the students can hear properly what the engineer is talking about. I hope that they must do

that next time to the students that will be having plant tour on the plant. But overall, the tour was
good for me.
Departure for Chowking Subic for Lunch
After the first itinerary, we went straight for Chowking Subic for the lunch. The trip to
Subic was a little less than 2 hours of travel. We have a little rest in the bus while travelling to
Subic.

The photo above was taken at the bus while travelling to Subic. When we were almost at
Subic, the tour guide in the GGTM tours gave us a little trivia about Subic that the things for sale
in the Subic were all tax-free. That means that the things to buy in Subic were a little less
expensive than in our place.

When we arrived at the Subic, we went straight to Chowking for the lunch. It is almost
2:00 pm and most of the students were hungry for lunch. When we arrived in the Chowking, we
didnt wait and eat lunch. The lunch was superb and we were thankful to Chowking for the great
lunch.

We rest

bit after

little

the

lunch.

Some

bought

souvenirs like keychains because there are some vendors that are selling souvenirs. After that, we
went to the next destination. That would be One Subic Power Plant.

The photo above was taken after the lunch and before the departure to the One Subic
Power Plant.
Arrival at the One Subic Power Plant (Second Itinerary)
The travel from Subic to One Subic Power Plant was a little more than an hour. We
arrived in the plant before 4 oclock in the afternoon.
