A living legend of Brazilian music, Caetano Veloso is an extraordinary artist who has enjoyed a remarkably
storied, adventurous career spanning over five decades. Initially cast as an experimentalist, he was soon heralded
as a musical revolutionary whose poetic lyrical sensibility and eclectic creativity became a global phenomenon.

A graceful and provocative innovator, Veloso was one of the integral figures of the Tropicalia movement which
combined traditional Brazilian styles with diverse and radical international influences. A mysterious, sophisticated
blend capable of incorporating anything from electric guitars and psychedelic rock to allusive, modernist poetry,
Dadaist imagery, and American pop, the movement also included fellow songwriters Gilberto Gil and Tom Ze,
vocal talents Gal Costa and Maria Bethania (Veloso's sister) and the group Os Mutantes.

The movement coincided with the formation of a military regime, which ultimately exiled Veloso and Gil, who both
went to live in London. Now universally credited with redefining Brazilian music, the movement inspired a
renaissance of Brazilian popular music both at home and abroad that has proven influential with modern artists
such as Beck and David Byrne. Over his career, Veloso has proven himself capable of a mind-boggling range of
styles, recording brilliant albums of delicate acoustic balladry and traditional bossa nova one year and delving into
funky samba and experimental excursions into pop and rock the next.

Veloso's last Bay Area appearance with SFJAZZ promoted the envelope-pushing artist his then new album of
rock-oriented songs entitled 'Ce' with backing from a trio of young Brazilian musicians that explored more modern
sounds that hearken to the late '70s grooves longtime admirer Byrne made when he was still fronting the Talking
Heads. Veloso returns with the same group of players to perform music from 'Zii e Zie,' his second edgy
recording featuring the potent band featuring Pedro Sá on electric guitar, Ricardo Dias Gomes on electric bass and
Fender Rhodes piano and Marcelo Callado on drums.
