Scientific and commercial research into nanopolymer technology, polymers

or copolymers with nanoparticles or nanofillers dispersed in the polymer

matrix, has exploded since its discovery less than a decade ago and today
there are many applications for nanopolymers both in industry and in
consumer markets. From medical devices to cars and now textiles and
clothing, the technology, which is invisible to the human eye, is now all
around us.

2. Packaging Coatings:
Research laboratories, manufacturing facilities, commercial and technical
centers are strategically located throughout the world. Global presence
gives our customers an important advantage convenient access to the
most comprehensive range of internal and external coatings, decorative
inks, compounds and pre-treatment solutions available. Our products are
widely used for the protection, performance and decoration of metal cans,
closures and plastic tubes:
- Aerosols and tubes

coating process so that our customers can focus on what they do best
meeting the needs of their customers.

1. Reinforcing fillers in tire, industrial, footwear, and silicone rubber

applications;
2. Microporous fillers in battery separator applications;
3. Flatting and thickening agents in coating, adhesive, and sealant
applications;
4. Anti-caking, free-flow, and carrier agents in food, feed, and industrial
applications.

durability, performance and user acceptance.

Cold spray: an innovative thermal spray technique for the

coating of all kinds of materials
The Thermal Spray Centre (CPT) of the University of Barcelona (UB) has developed
for the first time in Spain a very innovative technology, cold spraying, that allows the
coating of metallic, ceramic, polymeric, and composite surfaces with all kinds of
designs. The use of this technology has multiple applications and provides solutions
to various markets, with a clear focus on high innovation.
The agreement signed between a renowned company in the signage sector and the
CPT is an example of the success of UB research and, specifically, of the research
carried out at the CPT. The aim of this agreement, which falls within the framework
provided by the CDTI and has been signed through the FBG (TACTOTEC project), is to
produce raised Braille lettering on tactile surfaces using cold spraying.

Nowadays, the assistive

devices for people with visual disabilitiessuch as elevator buttons or ATM keypads
are not very resistant; moreover, they are very susceptible to vandalism, which
renders them unusable. The final results of this project, based on an initial CPTs
trade secret and the research conducted within the HUBc campus of international
excellence, are being transferred to market, and the CPT is in search for partners to
commercialize them.
The wind energy sector presents another example of application of this technology.
In this area, the CPT is working together with eight European partners in the project
RIBLET4WIND, within the HORIZON 2020 programme, which aims to develop riblet
structures. In this case, the structures are based on shark gills in order to improve
the aerodynamics of wind turbines and increase their efficiency in the production of
energy. This model has already been tested successfully in the aeronautical sector,
and its application to the wind energy sector is now in progress.

Thermal Spray

The
rmal spray is a technique used in the manufacture of components that consists in
projecting small particles of materials as a nanostructured powder that is
mechanically bound to the surface being treated. The aim is to provide surface
treatment to the parts that are subjected to extreme conditions of friction, wear,
heat, or mechanical stress, as happens, among others, in the case of coated
prostheses, thermal sensors, catalysis processes, and absorption processes of
gaseous pollutants (Smart Cities).

The Thermal Spray Centre

The CPT, a centre devoted to the design and development of thermal spray coatings,
works both with conventional thermal spray technologiessuch as Flame Spray,
Plasma Spray, and High Velocity Oxygen Fueland with the most innovative
technologies available in the marketbeing the only centre to develop the Cold Gas
Spray technology in Spain at present.
The CPT, accredited as a TECNIO centre, develops coatings for protecting, modifying,
and making functional all kinds of surfaces against wear, corrosion, oxidation,
fatigue, and other external agents, in order to increase the life of its components,
repair worn components, recover surfaces, reduce costs, and provide surfaces with
new properties.
