Exercise 1
Answer to Questions
a. The capacitor across the fluorescent lamp circuit when it is in operation corrects to power to the lamp so that it acts as a power factor correction device.
b. If the starter is taken from the fluorescent lamp circuit when the lamp is already on them there will be no effect on the circuit. This is because the current required
to keep the lamp lit is passing through the lamp tube.
c. If the single pole switch is connected so that it becomes a master switch there should be no major alteration the circuit. All that is required for this is to
disconnect the wire connected to the line side of the single pole switch going to the first two way switch and connect it to the other side of the single pole switch.
d .This type of circuit would be normally installed along long corridors and on stair ways.
e. If the intermediate switch is replaced by a double pole switch then the two two-way switch could only work if this double pole switch is in the on position.
f. If L1 is open circuited then there would be no effect on the rest of the circuit.
Observation
When the circuit was appropriately connected:
1. Switch one control L1 and L2
2. Switch 2 was switched L3 lit
3. Switch 3 was switched L3 went off
4. Switch 4 was switched L4 came on again.
Relevant Theory
The fluorescent lamp uses a capacitor that acts as a power factor correction device, It undo the inductive effect of the inductor that shifts the phase angle and
reduces the effective power to the lamp. The inductor increases the voltage of the lamp circuit when the stater break its contacts for ionization to take place inside
the lamp. The inductor suppress the current to prevent a short circuit when the lamp tube start conducting current. Complete ionization allows current to flow
through the lamp tube creating light within the process.
Conclusion
Due to the fact that this type of lamp produces less heat, uses less current gives off less glares it is suitable in places such as business places, schools and
industrial facilities.

c. As the load current increase there is a decrease in Vab while there is an increase in Vbc.
d. The voltage across RL if R2 is open circuited.
Observation
When the circuit was connected appropriately with a constant supply voltage of 10 volts, an
increase in IL causes a causes a decrease RL. It also causes a decrease in voltage across Vab and
a decrease in current through I1. However, there is an increase in voltage across Vbc.
Relevant
Theory
Resistance offer an opposition to the flow of current in a circuit. When resistors are connected in
parallel it keeps the voltage constant in that part of the circuit however, when a resistor is
variable in that parallel circuit then that parallel branch resistance, voltage and current will
depends on the set of that variable resistor. It will also affect the voltage, current and resistance

This type of circuit can be used in a volume control setting since current, voltage and resistance

Exercise 3
Answer to questions
a. When the photocell was covered lamp B was lit.
exercise 4
Answer
to
questions
a. If the capacitor C1 is removed from the circuit only the inductor will remain as a filter device
and
thus
an

voltage ripples.
b. If the choke is removed and there is no filtering device then there will be maximum ripples in
the
circuit
voltage.
c. If diode (D2) is removed from the circuit only half of the AC cycle will be rectified with the
other
half
being
disconnected.
d. If one diode is reversed then half of the AC cycle will be a short circuit while the other half
will
be
stopped.
Observation
When the circuit was connected based on requirements and the supply connected, with no filter
in the circuit there was a lot of ripples in the DC voltage. When the choke was connected in
series with the load in the circuit the ripples were reduced. A capacitor was also connected in
parallel with the load and the ripples were further reduced when measured.
Relevant
Theory
The diode is made of a P-type and a N-type material and is put together that creates a junction.
The purpose of the diode is to allow current to flow in one direction only, so that this junction
only allows current to pass through it one way. Arranged in a particular way (bridge rectifier) it
can convert alternating current to direct current. The DC voltage that is produced comes out with
many ripples and require something to reduce them in order for the DC to work well. The
capacitor is used since it stores electric charge in an electrostatic field and discharge it when the
need requires. An inductor is also used and operates similar to an inductor however, it stores its
charge
in
the

magnetic
field.
Conclusion
This circuit is very useful because many electronic circuits operates on direct current so it is used
to change alternating current to direct current to supply the need of these electronic circuits.

Exercise 7
Answer to questions
a. The type of overload devices incorporated in the starter used is the thermal heater device.
b. Two types of overload devices used in motor starters are overload relays and eutectic alloy switch.
c. Factors that should be taken in account when selecting/setting overloads devices for starters are:
1. The maximum starting current for the motor.
2. The maximum load current for the motor.
d.
Observation
When the stop start jog circuit was connected and the start button pressed the motor start turning however when the stop button was pressed it stop turning. When
the jog button was pressed the motor start turning and when it was released the motor stopped.
When the direct on-line two stop start station was connected, the first start was pressed and the motor start turning, when one stop was pressed the motor
stopped. When the second start was pressed the motor started again but when the second stop was pressed the motor stopped again.
The first start was pressed and the motor start running and the second stop was used to stop it. Tte second start was pressed to start the motor and the first stop
was used to stop it.
Relevant Theory
The contactor operates on the principle of electromagnetism therefore, when a current is passed through its coil a magnet is produced. This magnet is setup so
that it turn on or off some magnetic switch. These switches when in the on position it turns on a motor.
Conclusion
Since magnetic switches can be used to turn switches on or off they can be used to control devices at a distance using high current.
