Homework #10: Preparing for your Motivational Speech
Please complete the following questions in preparation for your motivational speech.
1. What is/are the specific action(s) you want your audience to take as a result of hearing your
speech?
I want my audience to fight the music cutters where it matters in public school settings. Especially those
who were affected by music at a young age or ever participated in a musical activity during their
schooling. No American should have their education limited to only a few subjects, they deserve a wellrounded education like we had when we were in school.
2. What are the relevant motivations/interests/concerns in your audience that can induce them to take
this action? Identify at least 3.
A. The role that music has played in their lives and how it has affected them. Whether it is listening or
playing, music has always been a prevalent part in everyones life.
B. The future of our education is important to raise our future leaders, removing core elements of
education isnt going to help our students learn, it will prove detrimental.
C. Loss of a life skill and emotional creativity would be lost also. Music helps individuals grow and
without it can hurt upbringing.
3. What are the relevant and appropriate emotions that your speech should arouse in your audience in
order to motivate them? Identify at least 3.
A. Anger by raising my voice on topics that I feel strongly about to get my point across in a more
powerful way.
B. Thoughtful after pausing after phrases that I want to sink in.
C. Intrigued by moving away from the podium during an important statement of the speech.
4. Drawing on your research for your topic, identify some specific strategies (factual examples,
language, descriptions, etc.) that can arouse these emotions.
As mentioned above things like a shift in the sound of my voice could help get my point across more
clearly, or pausing after phrases, moving away from the podium, possibly the use of visual aids.
5. Following the Motivated Sequence, list some possible strategies for getting your audience's attention,
presenting the need, presenting the satisfaction, and for enabling them to visualize how the need can be
satisfied through their taking appropriate action. Then describe how you would make your final appeal
for action in the speech.
Attention would be gotten through pathos or a statement that could relate to the audience. Throughout the
speech I would connect with my audience, showing them why this is so important and relating it to them
so they understand. At the conclusion I would sum everything up and end with a quote.
