once a miser went on bu'siness. He had a hundred

pieces of gold in his pocket.
when he had walked about two furlongs, he
fouhd that he had lost his purse. He was
in great distress' He remembered that a few moments
before he had taken his
handkerchief ftom his pocket to wipe his
face. He thought that his purse might have
fallen on the road when he pulled out the
handkerchief. At once he walked back
along the road but failed to find the purse.
The miser rushed to the town crier and
sought his help. The tower crier said,
"you must offer a reward to the person
who will refurn your purse. otherwise you
cannot get back the purse." The miser complied.
He offered a reward of ten pieces of
gold. The crier made the announcement.

A few

days later a farmer came to the miser.

"I

was lying on the road", said the farmer.
"Is this yours ?,, ,.yes, it is,,, replied the
miser, counting the money. "Thank you
very much indeed for refurning the purse.,,
The farmer asked for the reward. "How

"There were a hundred and ten pieces
of gold in the purse. you have already taken
your reward." "No, I haven't," protested
the farmer. ..The purse contained only

hundred pieces. you are bruffing just
to avoid gving me the reward.,, The miser
didn't give in.

The farmer appealed to the judge. The judge

heard the case attentively. The
miser was summoned. The judge examined
the purse. He turned to the miser. ..How
many pieces of gold does your purse hoid
?,, he asked, ..one

hundred and ten pieces,,,

replied the miser, "But this purse hords
only a hundred pieces,,, said the judge, .so
it
cannot be yours"' He handed the purse
to the farmer. The miser overreached
himself.
