The Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness mission is to protect, preserve and

restore the wilderness character of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and
the Quetico-Superior Ecosystem

JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Administrative & Communications Coordinator

CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time

REPORTS TO: Membership & Operations Director

LOCATION: Minneapolis

COMPENSATION: $15/hour
SUMMARY
The Administrative & Communications Coordinator works closely with staff to support the
mission and activities of the organization through development, outreach/communications, and
operations. They often represent the organization publicly by participating in outreach events and
partnership initiatives. This position is classified as part-time, 20 hours per week.
PRIMARY RELATIONSHIPS

Works closely with the Membership & Operations Director on development/membership


tasks and with Advocacy Director as a communications assistant
Works with all staff to coordinate administrative functions in the office and support program
initiatives

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations
Provide administrative support to staff, including managing general info email, maintaining
organization contacts, scheduling meetings, coordinating agendas, preparing meeting
materials, and recording meeting minutes as needed
Process donations, generate daily donation reports, and generate acknowledgements
efficiently and with high level of accuracy
Assist with membership mailings, both monthly in-house mailings as well as semi-annual
mailings with print vendor (list editing, mail merges, and stuffing envelopes)
Support accounting staff by filing finance records, collating payments, completing weekly
deposits, and assisting with annual audit
Provide office support to staff by answering the phones, photocopying, managing exhibiting
materials, maintaining a presentable front-of-house, and organizing and ordering supplies
Responsible for intermittent office errands (post office, Office Max etc.)
Assist staff with planning and hosting of various member events and provide support for
education, conservation, and advocacy initiatives
Development
Research and define development strategy for building partnerships with campus and student
environmental groups in the Twin Cities metro area

Assist with foundation research and identifying new funding opportunities for Friends
programs and initiatives
Assist with managing organizations membership with the Minnesota Environmental Fund,
including tracking compliance and engagement opportunities

Communications
Develop and manage a system and procedure for tracking social media posts, articles, and
accomplishments for use in online and print communications (newsletter, emails etc.)
Manage the collection of newsletter content and distribution to membership as well as
community partners
Draft monthly e-newsletter to members and supporters
Manage organizations social media accounts as a coordinator of content, growing presence
and number of followers
Assist with website administration
COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

Compensation rate is $15/hour, any hours worked over 20 hours/week will be compensated
at the same rate
Pro-rated vacation time, sick time, and holidays
Pro-rated annual wilderness travel benefits, including 2.5 work days and up to $150 in
expenses for a Boundary Waters/Quetico canoe trip

EXPERIENCE

At least one year of administrative or office support experience


Bachelors degree preferred (completed or in process)
Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines while remaining detail oriented
Strong writing skills and experience with various forms of written communication
Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to listen well and positively represent the organization
and its mission
Strong initiative and work ethic, ability to efficiently manage time and workload
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google applications etc.
Willing to be a flexible member of a small but effective and passionate team, available for
events and meetings outside of regular office hours
Ability to work with confidential information relating to the organizations work
Valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle
Passion for preserving the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and its ecosystem
