EXPANSION AND RENOVATION UPDATE

For the past two years, MoMA has been working with Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in
collaboration with Gensler, to refine the plans for MoMAs renovation and expansion.
While a final architectural design is not anticipated to be ready until later this year, the
Museums architects and staff have been working together to advance the project and
have addressed a number of issues to date regarding circulation and space allocation.
The overarching goals are to show as much of the collection as possible in new and
exciting ways and to create the most welcoming and engaging experience for visitors.
In preparation for the expansion, the Museum will undertake renovation projects in its
existing building. A phased approach beginning on the east end of the campus will allow
for improvements and new visitor accommodations that will be completed by the time
construction begins on the west end of the Museum. This phased approach will enable
MoMA to remain open to the public throughout the renovation and construction process.
Phase 1: Renovation
Renovation work begins in February 2016 and will be completed in Spring 2017

The following galleries will be closed for renovation:

These gallery spaces will be reconfigured into 2 suites (5,000 sq. ft. and 10,000
sq. ft) to provide a more flexible and improved space for collection installations
and special exhibitions.

The Bauhaus staircase, which currently connects the 2nd and 3rd floors of the
Museum in the Ronald S. and Jo Carole Lauder building, will be extended down to
the ground floor, significantly improving circulation and providing enhanced
access to the galleries on the second floor.

At the base of the Bauhaus stair, a new coat check facility will be installed to
accommodate visitors entering the Museum through the Lauder building.

A new lounge area with seating will be created on the ground floor near the
escalators that lead to the Roy and Niuta Titus theaters, allowing an unobstructed
view of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden.

Phase 2: Renovation
The second phase of renovation, beginning in Spring/Summer 2017, will make
improvements to the main lobby and the MoMA Design Store, add a new lobby
connected to the galleries on the west end of the campus, and a new circulation core.
Phase 3: Expansion
The third phase of the expansion will add approximately 50,000 square feet of new
gallery space; combined with 15,000 square feet of renovated gallery space (completed
during Phase 1), and the enhancements to existing spaces, the Museum will have a total
of 174,000 of square feet of gallery space, an increase of 30%. The total square footage
of the renovated museum will be 744,000, a 17% increase.
