Pioneering Design Education
• NID pioneered design education in the country since 1961
• NID is the only institution which offers UG / PG and Research
Programmes under one roof as a specialised design Institute
• NID has the largest number of PG Programmes in diverse design
disciplines in the world
• NID has three campuses focusing on UG education, PG Programmes
and Research & Development in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and
Bangalore respectively
• NID has the largest number of Applied Design Research Chairs in the
country which include John Bissell Research Chair for Textile Design-
Technology Fusion, O P Jindal Chair for Stainless Steel Product and
Innovation Development, Ravi Matthai Chair for Design Education
and Management, NID-Autodesk Chair for Design Education
Innovation, Asian Paints Colour Research Lab: Principal Designer,
Charles Eames Emeritus Fellowships and Jamsetji Tata Chair for
Universal Design instituted in the last 5 years for undertaking

• NID’s alumni have earned global recognition by winning


many awards across categories.
• Since 2001, NID has transformed its infrastructure including
labs, studios, Knowledge Management Centre to be on par
with best-in-class institutions in the world.
• By setting up Design Vision Centre in 2005, dedicated to the
nation by His Excellency, President of India, Shri A P J Abdul
Kalam, NID has become arguably the most advanced Mind to
Market facility among design institutions.
• NID has set up the first National Design Business Incubator in
the country in 2003, thus initiating design entrepreneurship
in the country
• NID has initiated 360° performance appraisal system
through KPA for faculty and encourages continuous
upgradation. Currently, 10 faculty members are engaged

National Entrance Exam for Design (NEED)
• Objective: Create a robust Design Aptitude Test for UG / PG
Programme of NID which can be inclusive enough for other
institutes to subscribe.
• Major Step: Initiation of National Entrance Exam for Design
Administration: 3 Experts designated for completing the
assessment, validation & facilitation, with the following
objectives:
• Complete ‘Documentation of the Existing System’
• Making the system robust, contemporary and address some
of the feedback on different aspects.
• Design relevant training inputs to align all the staff involved
in the process to a National Selection System.
• Creating an administrative and IT / Database Management
infrastructure for National Entrance Exam for Design
• Admission Committee and the External Experts to work
together for completing transition to new system in 2009-10
so that the NEED can be launched in October 2008.
