Ronald Lashley Period 8

Outline
Introduction Essay: Social Protest is when a group of people with the same belie
fs are against another group of people and their beliefs so they act on it or be
gin a protest against them. These protests were shown before the civil war again
st slavery through escapes, self-mutilation, sabotage, activism, revolts, social
revolutions or work slowdowns.
Social Protest helps people to express people feelings in thoughts through viole
nt and non violent ways. Examples of these protest in the time of the civil war
was Bleeding Kansas. A few other ones was the underground railroad, fugitive sla
ve law, ignoring the fugitive slave law, and Confederate states. The two sides u
sually in the time of the civil war was the confederate and union also known as
the south (confederate) and north (union).
Some of the social protest that I researched was violent and others was non viol
ent. The violent protest are positive from one end but as time goes on it still
hurts them like it did with the blockade. Some of these social protest could see
m helpful but as shown it can have a negative impact.

Art Piece #1 Bleeding KansasThis painting of Bleeding Kansas, which was when a p
ro-slavery mob destroyed homes stores, and an anti-slavery newspaper office in L
awrence, Kansas. It looks like people shooting and killing each other and burnin
g the house on the left of the painting.
It protests the people against slavery from voting on the issue of the Kansas-Ne
braska Act and Missouri compromise. I know this because they only went after the
antislavery people and newspaper office, which would keep them from voting and
getting news around by the newspaper office being destroyed.
It is an effective protest because it stopped some antislavery people from votin
g. It is not an effective protest because by stopping those people from voting t
heir opinion would not be heard or supported.

itive slave law makes the slaves feel like they are always being watched.
It protests slaves running away. I know this because the fugitive slave law make
s it so that slaves are sent back to there plantation after running away.
It is an effective protest because it keeps slaves from running away and if they
did, they are sent back to the plantation. It is not an effective protest becau
se the people in the north are against slavery so they would not turn the slave
in to be sent back.
