Personal Profile:

I have been working as a Teaching Assistant at a secondary PRU for the past three years supporting the
ICT department. In the ICT department I have to be competent using desktop computer systems as I
teach the students how to use various applications. The applications that we use on a regular basis are
Databases (MS Access), spreadsheets (MS Excel), word processing (MS Word), Desktop Publishing
(MS Publisher) and presentation software (MS PowerPoint).

My job role includes working closely with the Head of ICT to track over looking and marking student
coursework. Help teach the students and assist with staff training also to guide teaching staff who are
covering ICT lessons. I prepare handout for students by creating, printing and photocopying. I send
internal emails to staff and scan documents into computer system and manipulate data. To complete my
work to a good standard I have to give clear and concise feedback in written and verbal form to the
students to help them progress to learn. I also have to explain and demonstrate how to combine
different sources of information to create different documents that are used in different business
environments; for example, Letters, memos, reports, information leaflets, presentations etc. I have also
provided technical support on a few occasions where programs have crashed or can’t find printer on
system.

In the role as a Teaching Assistant I have to be organised, as a member of staff or outside agency could
request information about a specific pupil at any time, so their personal files need to be kept up-to-date
in order to give accurate information. Communication is made with parents on a regular basis through
verbal and written communication. I often call parents, carers and youth workers to arrange
appointments and to discuss any present issues that need to be resolved. Written communication is
given in the form of weekly reports to parents that summarised the students’ behaviour, learning,
attendance, punctuality and also I have to obtain an attainment grade for each subject the student’s
studies. These reports are complied on paper and then transferred to (MS Excel) which is then into
(MS Word) and sent to parents every week and it is important that the reports are accurate to
communicate effectively on a regular basis with parents. I have to be organised and manage my own
workload and prioritise effectively in order to meet my deadline and also complete the reports properly.

When teaching or demonstrating application software to IT users staff and pupils, I have to explain and
demonstrate how ICT is used in the real world. Staff and pupils are taught about different automated
systems and how they support specific business functions or processes; for example databases – stock
control and booking systems and spreadsheets for tracking trends or modelling.

My past experience working in administration and being a part owner in a business has helped me to
deliver the best standard of support to teaching staff, students, parents and support agencies, I.e. Youth
Offending Service etc.
