2015 CSB Okija PROJECT SPECIAL REPORT. Developed By CSB Okija Project Team
1.0
INTRODUCTION
Very few states are committing resources into securing the next generation. And the Anambra
State government is providing a lead, in no small has contributed to the task of providing the
most reliable tool, education for the Anambra Child; quality free education and conducive
learning environment. But this huge opportunity in most cases have been less maximized due
to the attitude of the community; chieftains, parents and children. The response of the
children towards education often contend with their passion for trade, causing a great
challenge in their academic pursuit a nightmare of the typical Igbo child.
A renaissance to halt this circle that would continue rather stop is the Inaugural City Spelling
Bee (CSB) Okija 2015. CSB is a product of Interspeeches International, Inc. The project
organized by the ESEIMIEGHAN THANKGOD, as a community development service project in
the course of his National Youth Service (NYSC) in the locality. A gift to the Okija child.
While the credibility and prospectus of the project was greatly acknowledged, 11 schools
enrolled for the bee, a captivating 3hours 30minutes moments captured by NTA and
Madonna FM (93.3), as the kids displayed uncommon brilliance turning the event into a
scrabble they spelt exchangeable endlessly. The peak of the event witnessed an
amazement, as a thirteen year old, Ibekwe Chidu of Central School, Okija leaving his
competitor twelve year Ozulumba Chimdindu with the second place entered the CSB Hall of
Fame, Okija emerging as the Spellebrity of the City Spelling Bee (CSB), Okija held on the 18th
May, 2015 at the Prestigious Umuesudam Hall, Ubahu-Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area,
Anambra State, Nigeria.
The significance of the project was commended by the Okija people with sponsorship from
Indomie Instant Noodles and Obijackson Foundation, Madonna University, Okija Youth
Movement, Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Madonna FM (93.3).

CSB Okija is a purpose driven community development project anchored on the need to
restore and sustain the lost passion of children towards academic excellence. According to
Interspeeches research in children Psychology spelling is the foundation of the childs
learning culture. Children dont begin by learning how to solve Math; rather they begin by
trying to pronounce words. Consequently, if this innate and latent potential is rightly
harnessed and engaged, their interest in learning can be very much sustained worthwhile of
tomorrow.
It is an ingenious product of Interspeeches International, a renaissance in celebrating
sustainable academic excellence.

While challenges involved in executing such a project are enormous, the project was activated
in November 2014, with research conducted covering a total of 15schools, followed by invite
to the individual schools. In addition to survey and assessment, the activation period also took
several months of identifying, linking and connecting sponsors to facilitate the prosperity of
the project.
The project required 20weeks of adequate preparation, thus Practice Brochure (WordBank)
was dispatched to all schools that will prepare them for the bee. At every point in the tour,
the schools received the project warmly. Though directors expressed dissatisfaction on the
lack of this kind of opportunity for kids to test their intellectual capacity, but acknowledged
the project as first of its kind in Anambra State.

this was the essence behind the bee, to inspire and motivate children to crave and sustain

THE BEE
Much anticipated the bee resulted into 13rounds. The first and the second round followed
the order of the tags. But at the third rounds, as fall-off was recorded it was now in the order
of the outstanding tags.
The children exhausted over 400. The first round recorded 24falls-offs, and second round 16
fall-outs, third round recorded 6 fall-out. And finally bored down to the last five (5) standing,
the period to determine the spellebrity was no easy task for the Judges as children spell past
Akeelah, with words like Moustache and Eminence and many others. Preparation and
opportunity are key indicators of success. The winning word was by, Ibekwe Chidu of Okija
Central School, as he spelt the word, sanctuary to the surprise of the judges and audience.

CHALLENGES/RECOMMENDATION
Though the project was considered as an ingenious idea, but faced some challenges due to
the lack of adequate funding; such as moving from one school to the school. Doing the
community survey was not easy at all:
1. Corp members should be given special attention in the course of executing their
project. The challenges of embarking on a developmental project are enormous. Every
project should be given relevant attention.
2. National Youth service Corps should provide a platform by which they communicate
to the potential sponsor of the Corp while they are seeking for funds.
3. The project should be extended to other local government areas of the state. Its a
legacy beyond material; building the total Nigerian child.
12.

CSBNEWS
It is a culture. The preference of business to education is a norm in the Igboland. While this ancient
tradition thats poorly defined by the low earning class of the Igboland affects the career dreams of
children, a 13years Chidi Ibekwe of Central School, Okija under the careful of over 200 audience with
highly experienced crushed all the odds and emerged as the CSB Okija Champion. From the
beginning of the event Chidi has displayed the winning attitude of confidence and intelligence. He
spells for the whole audience to know. Not afraid of any form of mistake with much self-belief, Chidi
spelt loudly. Confidence is a rare helper such kind of an occasion, but Chidi though was his first time
of ever attending a competition has established a mark for the rest of the Okija child. During the
NTA interview he admonished kids to study and always prepare for life. There is everything worthy
in education. It holds the same value as trade does. Opportunity may never inform you before it
comes. Continue readings while the story unfolds
Profitable Fun!
Beyond expectation. The audience was amazed. Every scene of program was
fun together with rare display of intellectual acumen. Every one of them
stand to defend the course which they have been chosen, and words were
their pass. Children held the audience judges in disarray and raised the
expectation of their children to commit to enrol for the bee come next
season.
Nelly Ebi-Koru, rep. State Co-ordinator,
NYSC left with a story to tell. Caught in the
razzmatazz
HEIGHTENED
EXPECTATIONS!
While nobody wishes the failure of anyone. Everybody wishes the success of their
team. Coaches understands the nature of the game and simply rely on the abilities
of their kids, every silence along the way establishes a hole in the middle. A simile to
the story of the biblical rapture, there were many vacant seat. As the event
approaches the peak the tension becomes heighted and children have to relax while
their expectation remains intact

SHE IS MY HERO!
She is my hero was the statement of the director of Seat of Wisdom
Schools; Chindinmas principal. She had been watched closely by her
principal and her school team with much expectation of her emerging
as the winner of the bee. Though she was later left with the second
place, the entire school celebrate her bravery and intellectual prowess.
