Task 2 : Design.

- For this task we were asked to extend our research further on two of the
same chosen works in relation the design by us based on research informed
and acknowledged sources on the characteristics and movements covered in
class. research had to be tap in a range of different sources.

For my First design post I decided Im going to choose Art Nouveau to extend
my research on. Art Nouveau was an innovative style of modern style, that
arising from about 1890 and went on more or less till the First World War.
I found these Examples of chairs online:

Figures 1 and 2: Art Nouveau influence on chairs and sofas.

Art Nouveau focuses on these either circular and or sometime floral patterns,
but its not just that. I have noticed that these designs contain little to less
color and its not just about the pattern on the furniture because all of the
chair or furniture has a particular look.

As an example to explain this further I found this antique art nouveau piece
of furniture:

Figure 3: Art Nouveau Piece of furniture

As you can see this piece of furniture does not focus only on the pattern
itself. Its whole construction was made out to look a whole with the patterns
themselves. Using clear varnish on raw wood, I would explain this piece of
furniture as mysterious in a way, I really like the way the designer keeps up
with this root like structure going up, its very beautiful, elegant and pleasing
to the eye.
Art nouveau was deeply influenced by Celtic designs. And also Japonism .
The whole aesthetic was considered to be quite revolutionary and new,
hence its name - New Art - or Art Nouveau. It is considered to be more
decorative art. The whole concept of joining art and design together no
matter how functional it may be.

- For my second post in design I chose Pop Art.

For my research on Pop art borrowed this book POP ART AND THE ORIGINS
OF POST MODERNISM by Sylvia Harrison.
She talked about theoretical framework and Social Critics. As well as
philosophical and Cultural Which I didnt really go into that deeply, as I was
more interested in the actual explaining of the combination between art and
self.
Pop art is a movement that started out in the 1950s in Britain. It presented a
challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular
culture such as advertising and news. In pop art, material is sometimes
visually removed from its known context, isolated, and/or combined with
unrelated material.
I have found this image online as reference to pop art:

Figure 4: 'I was a richman's Plaything' by edwardo paolozzi. 1947

Pop art is very bold and iconic, very cartoonlike bold colors, sometimes theres a
sense of comedy, sometimes very unserious.
Pop art is short for popular art, its a kind of art created in order to be accessible.as
in easily accessed by anyone. It has a sense of optimism which is shown throughout
a lot of paintings and even sculptures. Something in common pop artists had, is
that they all managed to promote mass production somehow.
I have found this pop art inspired chair design online:

Figure 51: Pop Art Inspired chair.

This chair has a very basic design construction with a pop art comic strip printed all
over it.

Second image I found online is this cap design which was also inspired by Pop art:

Figure 6 : Pop art inspired design on cap.

These typical flat caps have been around for about 5 to 8 years. What they did is
have a camouflage design incorporated with pop art inspired colors. Ending result is
a very eye catchy cap full of complimentary colors and a splattered sense of pop
art. Just like you would see a character from the comics wearing.

Conclusion is, I have never really understood what the design part of Art and Design
really meant. Throughout this semester I learned a lot about new people and their
work which I have seen before but didnt really take interest as I only thought they
would come up with the designs from the blues. Never really got the Inspiration part
and how every piece of design connects to another somehow. This was my first year
I was introduced to a whole new understanding of Art, especially when it comes to
Artistic designs. I had some trouble with the referencing as this was my first time
using references, but tried my best to satisfy the requirements of the brief.
