Of course, were talking about Lincoln Motor

Theres a new spirit surrounding Fords luxury division these days. After a lengthy period
of malaise, Lincoln appears to have regained
its motivation. The proof is in the models now
in showrooms and the latest prototype from
the most recent round of auto shows.
For the 2016 model year, Lincoln offers

compact MKC, growing in size (and price)
with the MKX, and topping off with the Lincoln Navigator, a full-bore luxury SUV with
tough, body-on-frame construction.
The two newest models are the MKC and MKX,
both featuring sleek styling with toned-down versions of Lincolns signature split-wing grille.
The MKC is probably the best known of the pair,
thanks in part to actor Matthew McConaugheys
moody TV commercials. The MKC blends the best
traits of a sport crossover with the refinement of a
luxury sedan, according to Lincoln.
The larger, new-for-2016 MKX graces its

spacious interior with top-flight materials,

enhanced with a wide range of ingenious features. Adding to the sport-luxury aura is the
available 2.7-liter, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine, delivering a quiet but potent
combination of power and efficiency.
The Navigator is offered in two sizes
standard wheelbase and the Navigator L with
12 inches more in wheelbase creating a gargantuan cabin for family and cargo. Powered by a
larger, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6, the big rig can
tow between 8,300 and 9,000 pounds, depending on wheel size and front- or all-wheel drive.

Vacations

Road trips add fun, save money

planning can make driving the best experience for travel

riving vacations are

popular for a variety
of reasons, not the least
of which is flexibility. Such excursions are not restricted by flight
schedules, and travelers often
feel as though they have more
control over their trips when
traveling by car rather than traveling by air.
Road trips also can save travel-

ers money, especially when traveling in groups of three or more and

expenses such as fuel and tolls are
shared. In addition to sharing the
road with a few friends and family members, road trip enthusiasts
can employ several other strategies to enjoy a vacation thats both
frugal and fun.

DRIVE

downsize your
vehicle.
While prices at the pump
have been more driver-friendly
in recent months, road trippers
who drive large sedans, trucks
or SUVs might be able to save
money by driving smaller vehicles during their trips. Especially
small vehicles may be impracti-

cal and uncomfortable depending on the number of people who

are making the trip, but midsize vehicles with ample storage
space tend to be more fuel-efficient than large trucks or SUVs. If
someone in your traveling party
drives such a vehicle and its in
good shape, take that car instead
of a larger alternative.

Maintenance / Summer

Purchases

temperatures create
automotive problems
Small changes improve auto life
Dramatic fluctuations in temperature
can wreak havoc on automobiles. While
cars and trucks are designed to be reliable
under various conditions, sometimes the
weather can get the best of even the most
reliable vehicle.
Many people associate car troubles
with cold weather. However, cars are
susceptible to breakdowns when it is hot
outside. Extreme heat adds to an already
high temperature under the hood, requiring ventilation and cooling systems to
work that much harder. Batteries, alternators, starters, fan motors, and cooling
systems are particularly vulnerable to
high heat. Its easy for a car to overheat
and breakdown. Proper maintenance and
some hot weather guidelines can keep
drivers safe and on the road when temperatures soar, whether drivers are going
on a quick ride or an extended road trip.
Be sure the radiator is working properly
and is filled with fluid at all times. This
helps prevent overheating, which can
strand a vehicle on the side of the road.
Hot temperatures cause items to expand, such as the air molecules inside
of the tires. Make sure the tires are properly inflated so blowouts do not occur.
Keep up-to-date with oil changes and
other routine maintenance. Vehicles
that are well maintained are less likely
to be susceptible to heat strain.

Vehicle buyers:
consider value, costs
before amenities

Proper air flow is essential to cool an

engine and keep a vehicle air conditioning system operating efficiently.
If the cooling system has not recently
been serviced, have it done before the
hot weather arrives.

Replace an old battery, and top off

a functioning battery with distilled
water when necessary, particularly if
evaporation has occurred.
Clean the vehicle so that it will better
reflect the suns rays, cutting down on
radiant heat.
When the vehicle is parked, use a car
cover or a reflective shade in the windshield to protect the interior from sun
damage and excessive heat.
Tinted windows can help block out
more of the suns ultraviolet rays.
Make sure that tint is legal and applied
properly if it is done after-market.
Plan road trips for early in the morning or late at night to cut down on the
amount of time spent driving during
the peak heat and sunshine.
Passengers should wear appropriate
clothing and apply sunscreen. Car
windows do not block UV light, and
passengers may be susceptible to sunburn even when theyre in the car.
Park in the shade whenever possible.
Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for short moments.
If the temperature gauge inside of
the car reads hot, pull over, open the
hood and turn the heat on inside the
car to expel some of the pent-up heat.
Keep plenty of water on hand in the
event of a breakdown to prevent dehydration until help arrives.

THE

points to consider
before car purchases

uyers often find the process of

finding a new car fun. Test driving
vehicles and playing with all of the
gadgets that todays increasingly tech-heavy
vehicles have to offer can be akin to kids
visiting a candy store and being given carte
blanche to fill up their baskets.
But as enjoyable as finding a new car
can be, the financial commitment that such
a purchase requires can make the process
somewhat nerve-wracking as well. Buyers
often assign the most risk to preowned vehicles, and rightfully so. But some buyers
even regret their purchases after buying a
new car, whether the car does not suit their
lifestyle as much as they had hoped or the
vehicle simply isnt living up to the expectations drivers had for it at the time of
purchase. Savvy buyers will consider the
following factors before taking the keys to
their next new cars.

additional costs
Many new car shoppers plan to finance or
lease their vehicles, but the down payment
and monthly payment is not the only number buyers must confirm before buying a vehicle. After the purchase price and monthly
payments have been figured out, the two
most significant costs buyers must consider
are insurance and gas. Some vehicles cost
more to insure than others, and the cost of a
policy will depend on more than just a buyers personal driving history. The vehicles
safety features, where a driver lives and the
type of vehicle, both its make and model and
the category it fits into (i.e., sports car, luxury
vehicle, etc.), are all going to be used to determine the cost of an insurance policy.
Buyers also must consider how much a
vehicle will cost to fuel up before making
a final decision. Many a driver has grinned
when driving a brand new SUV off a dealership lot, only to frown on that first trip to
the filling station. Insurance companies typically provide free estimates to prospective
customers, so do your homework on the different makes and models youre considering,

reputation
Thanks to the Internet, todays vehicle buyers have a valuable tool at their disposal that
those of yesteryear rarely had: their fellow
drivers. When considering certain makes and
models, go online to see what fellow drivers
and professional reviewers have to say about
a given vehicle. Sites like Edmunds.com and
Safecar.gov offer professional assessments of
various makes and models, while various message boards exist to allow drivers to review the
performance of their vehicles. Such resources
are invaluable and can paint a realistic picture
of what it might be like to own and drive a particular automobile.

resale value
While selling a car you dont even own
yet is probably not foremost on your mind,
it is important to consider a cars potential resale value before buying it. The high
costs of new vehicles has pushed many
buyers out of the new car market, making
preowned vehicles a more affordable and
attractive option. So considering a cars potential resale value before buying it new is
a smart move that can pay dividends down
the road when youre back on the market
for a new vehicle. Kelley Blue Book (kbb.
com) is a valuable resource to gauge the resale value of vehicles, and buyers can even
calculate the resale value of a car over its
first five years. This can help consumers determine which options to get on their new
cars and even help to govern their driving
habits in an effort to keep the vehicles resale value as high as possible.
When buying a new vehicle, it can be
tempting to buy the most visually stunning
or gadget-heavy vehicle on the dealership
lot. But buyers should consider more than
just appearance and accessories before buying their next new car.

Purchasing

leasing
lower monthly payments
less long term cost
able to change cars often

vs.

buying
lower/no down payment
eventual ownership
no penalties for use

Leasing offers
best alternative
for many drivers
Leasing can be superior to
buying in various ways

any people prefer leasing an

automobile to buying one,
and leasing can be more advantageous than buying in various ways.
Leasing allows drivers who cannot
afford to purchase a new and more reliable vehicle the opportunity to drive such
a car or truck, at a cost that is considerably less over the long haul than buying
the vehicle outright. Leasing also makes
it possible for drivers who prefer newer
cars to exchange their automobiles every
few years, saving them the expense of
maintaining a car as it ages.
When leasing an automobile for the
first time, motorists may not be aware of
certain things about leasing that could
benefit them over the course of their
leases. The following are a few such
things that drivers may want to consider when negotiating an automobile
lease at the dealership.
Mile restrictions are not set in stone.
Standard leases typically limit drivers
to 12,000 miles per year over the life of
the lease. In such an agreement, a threeyear lease would allow lessees to drive
36,000 miles in the vehicle. Any additional miles on the vehicle when it is
turned in at the end of the lease would
incur a penalty. But mileage limits are
negotiable, and drivers who think they
will exceed 12,000 miles per year can
tailor their leases to allow for additional
miles. Extra miles will cost more money,
but that extra expense will likely pale in
comparison to excess mileage charges,
making it well worth the investment for
drivers to negotiate extra miles into their
lease at the time of signing.
You may need to pay a substantial
initial down payment. Monthly lease
terms are favorable to men and women
who cannot afford to finance a car or
those who want to avoid long-term financing with hefty monthly payments.
But many leases require lessees to pay
substantial down payments upon agree-

ing to the lease. If such a down payment

proves a hurdle you cannot clear, then
its important to know that some leases
do not require a down payment at all,
while others require only a minimal
payment upfront. However, such leases
may be exclusive to drivers with exceptional credit.
You can comparison shop with a
lease. Much like you would comparison shop when buying a car, you can do
the same when leasing. After a dealer
runs your credit and/or estimates your
down payment, you may feel as though
you cannot afford to lease a new car. But
you have many options to choose from
when looking for an auto lease, and
each one is likely to make a different
offer. If you persevere and do your research, you ultimately may end up with
a lease that puts you in a new car at an
affordable price.
Gap insurance protects you in case of
a theft or wreck. Gap insurance (which
stands for guaranteed asset protection)
is available but not standard for an automobile lease. Gap insurance protects
lessees and covers their remaining lease
payments if a car is stolen or wrecked
while the lease is ongoing. Some lessees
choose to accept gap insurance, while
others do not. The latter group is taking
a risk that the car will not be stolen or
wrecked during the life of the lease. If
it is, the driver will then be responsible
for the monthly payments even if he or
she no longer has the vehicle. Drivers
in the former group will not be on the
hook for such payments. Some lessees
never use their gap insurance, but the
peace of mind it provides is worth the
investment for many drivers.
Leasing is a great way for drivers to
drive new automobiles they otherwise
might not be able to afford. But drivers
should familiarize themselves with the
ins and outs of leasing before signing on
the dotted line.

some leases do not require

a down payment at all, while
others require only a minimal

get a tuneup.

Another way to save money on

your road trip is to get a vehicle
tuneup in the days before your trip
is set to begin. Let your mechanic
know you are planning a road trip
and ask that a full diagnostic test
be conducted to make sure everything is running efficiently. An air
filter nearing its expiration date
may be worth replacing, as a new
filter will help to save money on
fuel. In addition, replace tires with
worn tread, as old or inadequately
inflated tires will force the engine
to work harder, wasting fuel and
costing you and your fellow travelers money along the way.

consider various types

of lodging.
Road trippers who plan well in
advance may be able to find great
deals on lodging, but too much
planning may cost travelers some
of the flexibility and freedom they
were hoping to enjoy during their
vacations. Weather permitting,
campsites can be unique and affordable places to stay. When planning your routes, choose roadways

that are close to popular campsites, avoiding campsites that are

too remote, as such sites may cost
you in time and fuel what youre
saving on lodging. If campsites
are unavailable, download hotel
website apps on your phone and
use these apps to find affordable
rooms as you go. Simply showing
up to hotels without reservations
is unlikely to yield great rates, but
apps may offer discounted rates on
rooms hotels are simply looking to
fill at the last minute.

bring your own food.

Fuel, lodging and food tend to
be the three biggest expenses on
driving vacations. Travelers who
bring their own food can save a
substantial amount of money and
maintain some control over what
they eat. Thats a big benefit for
men and women who like to eat
healthy and prefer to avoid the fast
food fare that tends to be the only
options available at rest stops.
Road trips make for great vacations, and travelers can take many
steps to make such excursions more
affordable without sacrificing fun.

riders: emphasize safety on the open road

Motorcylists face many threats, dangers from other vehicles

otorcycle enthusiasts in
locales with cold winters
may anticipate the warmer
weather of spring and summer more
than others, as it means they can pull
their bikes out of their garages and get
back on the open road. While riding
a motorcycle can be an exhilarating
experience, the U.S. Highway Safety
Authority notes that fatal crashes are
much more likely to occur to motorcycle riders than automobile drivers. As
the number of drivers and riders on the
road continues to increase, it has never
been more important for riders to practice motorcycle safety.

be seen and heard

Ever wonder why some motorcycles
make so much noise? Its to attract the
attention of other motorists. Thanks to
their small profiles, motorcycles can eas-

ily go unnoticed by motorists. Failure of

other motorists to see motorcycles on
the road is a chief contributor to collisions involving motorcycles.
One of the more comprehensive
studies on motorcycle accidents occurred in 1981. Titled Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification
of Countermeasures and published
by researcher Harry Hurt with the help
of the University of Southern California and the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, the study analyzed 3,600 motorcycle traffic accidents
in a specific region of California. The
findings showed most motorcycle accidents involve a short trip associated
with shopping, errands, friends, entertainment, or recreation, and the accident is most likely to occur within close
proximity to the riders home. Accident
involvement is significantly reduced
by the use of motorcycle headlamps,

including during daylight hours, and

the wearing of highly visible clothing,
including yellow, orange or bright red
jackets.
Although this research was conducted some time ago, it still underscores
the importance of remaining visible on
the road. While leather and denim may
be the traditional uniform of motorcycle riding, synthetic materials that have
reflective fabrics can improve visibility.
Highly visible colors, such as orange
and yellow, are good choices when on
the road. Riders also can add reflectivity to existing gear with reflective tape.
Many motorcycle riders, particularly those on Harley Davidsons, swap
out stock exhaust pipes for ones that
emit a louder decibel range. This helps
other motorists notice them.

When a rider is on the open road, he

or she doesnt have the protection of a
car frame to offer a buffer between the
rider and the pavement should an accident occur. That is why it is crucial to
invest in quality gear that can offer a
certain measure of protection. A highquality helmet that fits well is an important piece of safety equipment, as head
and neck injuries can result in paralysis
or fatalities. Pair the helmet with goggles or glasses with safety lenses. Durable nonslip gloves will help riders maintain a good grip on the handlebars, and
boots can cover the ankles. Although it
can be tempting to forgo long pants or
jackets when the weather warms, doing so can lead to painful abrasions and
road burn should a fall occur. Invest in a
leather jacket and pants or a high-quality, durable and bright-colored material.

for Traffic Safety and Manitoba Public Insurance found that there is no
evidence that traditional drivers
education classes reduce crashes,
highlighting the importance of advanced courses that can prepare
older and younger drivers alike for
what awaits them on the open road.
Taking such classes can save drivers
as much as 10 percent on their auto
insurance premiums, and those discounts may even last several years.
Adjust your existing policy. Mileage is another factor insurance
companies use when pricing their
automotive policies. While driving
habits change, few drivers think to
contact their insurance companies
when their habits change in ways
that can save them money. If your
daily commute is shorter than it was
when you initially opened your policy or if you now take public transportation to save money on gas, contact your insurance agent and give a
more up-to-date assessment of your
driving habits. Doing so might save
you a considerable amount of money each year.
Combine your policies. Perhaps
the simplest way to save on auto insurance is to combine your auto and
home insurance policies. Covering
your vehicles and your home via
the same provider may save you as
much as 15 percent on each policy.
Auto insurance is a considerable
expense, but drivers can take numerous steps to reduce the costs of their
policies.

SEIZE THE MOMENT

Louisiana Blvd NE

tute found that drivers in Florida

who had excellent credit scores received insurance quotes that were
less than half that of drivers whose
scores were considered poor. Thats
because insurance companies see
drivers with poor credit scores as
more likely to be in an accident than
those with excellent scores. Before
shopping for new policies, drivers
should take steps to improve their
credit scores by paying off their
consumer debts and having any
discrepancies on their credit reports
corrected.
Continue your education as a motorist. The III notes that non-driving
factors, such as age, are among the
variables insurance companies consider when determining the cost of
their automotive policies. While older drivers cant reverse the aging
process and younger drivers cant
add years to their driving histories overnight, there are ways these
drivers can lessen the impact their
ages have on the cost of their auto
insurance premiums. Advanced defensive driving courses can refresh
older drivers memories with regards to safe driving techniques
while also teaching them the latest
techniques to stay safe behind the
wheel. Younger drivers who take
such courses can be taught how to
drive in emergency situations in
controlled environments.

Repairs

advice from the pros:

Do not neglect auto service

small repairs in the short term save money in the longrun

he average age of a
personal vehicle on
the road today is more
than 11 years, according to
recent news reports. In tough
economic times, its natural to
rein in spending.
But the experts at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)

warn that putting off routine auto

maintenance or ignoring service
intervals is false economy. Small
issues can morph into more expensive repairs. For example,
failure to replace worn brake
pads or a faulty oxygen sensor -both relatively easy services for
qualified auto technicians -- can
result in expensive brake rotor

service or costly replacement of

the vehicles catalytic converter.
Frequently neglected items include oil changes, tire and brake
service, wheel alignment, air and
fuel filters, and transmission service, according to ASE-certified
auto technicians.
Besides, a well-maintained
vehicle gets better gasoline mile-

Maintenance / Cleaning

Wash your car

like a pro
Keeping vehicles clean maintains value

ehicle owners know maintaining a vehicle can be a lot of

work. Taking the time to properly care for a vehicle can prolong
its life expectancy and help owners
avoid breakdowns and other issues
along the way.
Regular washing is an aspect of vehicle maintenance that some may classify
as a purely cosmetic benefit. Certainly
a car wash can keep the vehicle looking its best, but there are other advantages to washing as well. Washing offers
preventative maintenance for the cars
paint and can help prevent rust and corrosion resulting from dirt, acid rain and
road salt. Rust can compromise hydraulic brake and fuel lines, as well as many
moving parts in the chassis and frame.
Corrosion of electrical connectors and
other parts under the hood can lead to
leaks, electrical shorts and a host of additional problems. Its easy to see how
washing the car is more essential than
one might have suspected.
If you live in an area with a high
amount of dust or industry, you may need
to wash your car as frequently as once
a week. Drivers who live along or near
coastal areas may need to wash their vehicles frequently to combat sea salt buildup. Garage-kept vehicles may be able to
go longer between washes, but in general washing a vehicle every two to three
weeks is a good rule of thumb. In addition, a good sealant will protect the paint
and other trims throughout the year.
The following are some other carwash tips to follow.
Always use a proper washing soap
solution. This will preserve the cars fin-

ish better than other homemade soaps.

Avoid using dishwashing liquid, which
can strip protective wax coatings.
Be prompt when cleaning off bugs,
sap and bird droppings that may stick to
the paint and become difficult to remove
over time.
Wait until a car has cooled down before washing. Heat speeds up the drying
of soap and water and can make it more
difficult to clean.
Always use a clean, non-abrasive
sponge. Resist the urge to move the
sponge in circles as you clean. Doing so
can create noticeable swirl scratch marks.
Instead, move the sponge lengthwise
across the body panels and hood.
Keep a separate rinsing bucket to clean
the sponge or washing mitt so that dirt is
not mixed into the clean, sudsy water.
Consumer Reports suggests using
a soft squeegee to remove most of the
water on the body of the car after washing and rinsing. Blot up any extra water
with a chamois.
Wax the car every season to ensure it
has maximum protection. In between,
apply a liquid spray wax to touch up
spots. Water beading is not an ideal indicator of whether or not the car needs a
coat of wax.
Dont forget to pay attention to the
interior. Vacuum the carpets regularly
to prevent ground-in dirt and routinely
clean the upholstery with a product specific to your vehicles interior, whether
that interior is leather or fabric.
Protecting a vehicle investment involves keeping the car clean. Know the
right ways to help a car or truck look and
perform like new.

Recreational vehicles require

special considerations
buyers consider several factors before rv purchases

There are
various
classes of
RVs, but
the largest
ones tend
to be
the most
expensive.

pportunity for adventure

abounds for recreational
vehicle owners. With a
motor home parked in the driveway, a road trip or instant family
getaway is only a few steps away.
While RVs can be rented, serious
road-trippers often prefer purchasing one so that it can be customized with the features desired and
always be at the ready. RVs vary
in price depending on the vehicle,
and there are a few thing prospective RV owners should know before they begin shopping.
First and foremost, drivers who
have not previous owned an RV or
even stepped inside of one you may
have an inaccurate perception of
these vehicles. Todays recreational
vehicles are much more than meets
the eye, and it pays to attend an RV
show to become acquainted with
the various types of motor homes.

This way you will be familiar with

the jargon and have a reasonable
idea of what you want before going
to a dealership.
There are various classes of
RVs, but the largest ones tend to
be the most expensive. Some RVs
have an engine and are driven like
a bus, while other models hitch to
the back of a truck or van. If you
will be towing an RV, you must be
certain the car or truck doing the
towing is equipped to tow a vehicle the weight and size of your
particular RV.
Some RVs have fixed dimensions, while others expand, either
manually or electronically, pushing out walls to provide even
more interior room when the RV
is parked. RVs have different floor
plans, and there are many different
models to fit a buyers needs.
Many RVs are equipped with

no frills furnishings, but there are

models that feature top-of-the-line
appliances and fixtures. Its possible to get granite countertops
and cherry cabinets in an RV, but
such accessories will increase the
cost of the vehicle. Upholstered
sofas and dining room banquettes
may be upgraded to leather. Some
RVs have an additional kitchenette
built into the exterior of the unit
for easy access when barbecuing
or cooking at a campsite.
How you plan to use the RV
should also be considered prior
to purchasing one. Will you be
spending time cooking meals and
sleeping inside, or will it mainly
be used as a storage unit for your
camping gear? Do you plan on taking extended vacations and desire
all the comforts of home? Defining
these goals will help you find the
right RV for you.

Another thing to consider is

renting an RV for a day or two to
get a feel for driving it and what
it is like to spend a night inside.
You may be able to determine if
you need more or less of a mobile
home when you ultimately decide
to purchase.
Make sure everything works
before you drive the RV off of the
lot. Repairs can be expensive, and
you do not want to be stuck with
a lemon when youre on the road.
Find out if there are any roadside
assistance packages that can be negotiated to offer you peace of mind
with your first RV.
The decision of whether or not
to purchase an RV requires ample
forethought. Comparing a number
of different models and designs
and weighing personal needs can
give buyers a good idea of which
RV is right for them.

Safety / Trailers

Trailers require special handling, care

Leasing can be more advantageous than buying in various ways.

ctive adults and busy families understand that one perk to owning a
pickup truck or an SUV is the ability to tow items behind the vehicle. Many of
these trucks already come equipped with
trailer hitches that make it possible to tow
boats, RVs, snowmobiles and more. But
safe and successful towing requires knowledge of the basics of hitching a trailer and
some special rules of the road. The following are a few safety tips for drivers unaccustomed to towing.

know your vehicles tow

weight capacity.
The owners manual will list the maximum weight a vehicle can tow safely, but
this is just a simplified estimation of data.
To tow successfully, its important to know
your vehicles gross combined weight rating,
or GCWR. This includes the vehicle itself, its
passengers and cargo, as well as the trailer
and the trailers cargo. More passengers on

board reduces the amount of weight you

can pull. Another weight factor is the tongue
weight, or how much of the trailers weight
rests on the hitch, which should be around 10
percent of the trailers weight. This helps reduce trailer sway and can improve steering.

practice proper weight

distribution.
Distribute the weight of the item being
towed to make towing smoother and safer.
The cargos center of gravity should be low,
and most of the weight should be toward the
front. Weight on either side also should be
even. These steps will help prevent the trailer
from fishtailing or flipping over.

use the right hitch

equipment.
Adjust the hitch so that the trailer being towed is relatively level to your vehicle
when attached. Connect lights to your trailer

through the hitch system so that brake lights

and other indicators work properly. Make
sure the hitch ball is the right size for your
trailer, otherwise the trailer might disconnect
during towing. Use a pin and safety chains to
keep the trailer secure.
Check if extra brakes are required.
Many states require a separate braking
system on towed vehicles with a loaded
weight in excess of 1,000 pounds. Newer
trucks may have a built-in controller for
brakes or you may need to have a system
installed. Experts from Popular Mechanics
advise using a trailer brake output system
that matches the trailer brake output to
the tow vehicles deceleration.

slow down and drive more

cautiously.
A vehicle towing a trailer will not maneuver the same way as a vehicle without
a trailer attached. Give yourself a greater
cushion of space between other vehicles.

It may take longer for you to brake because of the added weight. Get used to
using side-view mirrors because the trailer may block your rearview. Larger, extended side-view mirrors may help you
feel more comfortable and safe. Make
wide turns so that the trailer will clear
curbs and not tip over.

avoid backing up
Unless youre experienced with driving
large rigs, you may find reversing with a
trailer very challenging. Limit situations
that require backing up. Park in pullthrough parking spots when possible. If
you need to back up, move slowly and with
your hand on the bottom of the steering
wheel, turning it in the direction you want
the trailer to go.
Practice, practice, practice. Get acclimated with towing in a parking lot or on
empty streets before taking your trailer
out on the open road.

a car that can transition into flight. It may
cut down on commuting times or alleviate traffic jams. And lets face it, a flying
car might be pretty fun to operate. Now
those dreams are getting closer to reality.
The production prototype of the
Transition(R) Street-Legal Airplane completed its successful first flight at Plattsburgh International Airport in Plattsburgh, NY on March 23, 2012. The same
vehicle has also successfully conducted
initial drive and conversion testing, demonstrating the Transitions capability to
provide unmatched freedom, flexibility
and fun in personal aviation.
Developed by Terrafugia, Inc., a growing aerospace company founded by pilots
and engineers from MIT and supported
by a world-class network of advisors and
private investors, the Transition is a twoseat personal aircraft capable of driving on
roads and highways, parking in a single
car garage, and flying with unleaded automotive fuel. The prototype was unveiled
at the New York Auto Show in April 2012.
At a price tag of $279,000, its unlikely the
skies will be crowded with them anytime
soon, but the arrival of a car/plane hybrid
shows promise for future travel.
The successful first flight of this Pro-

duction Prototype Transition marks a

critical move toward initial production
and first delivery, said Terrafugia COO
Anna Mracek Dietrich. The company
will continue its testing program in preparation for first delivery, which includes
meeting stringent automotive crash tests
to meet federal standards. The aircraft is
expected to be sold within the next year.
The Transitions first flight reached an
altitude of 1,400 feet above the ground
and lasted eight minutes while staying in
the vicinity of Plattsburgh International
Airport. Six phases of flight testing are
planned to continue development and
demonstrate compliance to the Light
Sport Aircraft standards.
The government has already allowed
the use of special tires and glass on the
craft that are lighter than normal automotive tires to make it easier for the vehicle
to fly. It can travel 70 miles per hour on
the road and 115 in the air. Terrafugia says
an owner would need to pass a test and
complete 20 hours of flying time to be
able to fly the Transition.
Taking to the skies in personal aircraft
could revolutionize how people travel.
More information is available at www.

environmental concerns
guide auto design
Increasing fuel standards lead to shrinking engines

he move is on to produce more

fuel-efficient automobiles. Although alternative fuels have garnered significant publicity in recent years,
some automakers are simply shrinking
the standard car engine.
Automakers have been producing
three-cylinder engines for some time, but
are just now starting to reveal such engines to the public. While these types of
engines have traditionally been associated
with lawn mowers, mopeds and snowmobiles, a handful of cars are now being

equipped with three-cylinder engines to

increase fuel efficiency.
While three-cylinder engines have had
the unfortunate stereotype of being puny
next to vehicles touting more under the
hood, experts say that advances in engine technology have made it possible for
three-cylinder engines to produce more
power with less. Ford, Nissan and BMW
are just some of the automakers experimenting with three-cylinder engines while
also promoting other innovations to boost
efficiency. Streamlined aerodynamics, car-

bon fiber and improved horsepower can

change public perceptions of cars with engines that have fewer cylinders.
In addition to requiring less fuel, threecylinder engines take up less space in engine compartments, freeing up more room
for interior passenger space. This can create more space in traditionally compact
vehicles. Smaller engines can improve
safety because there is less risk that the engine will penetrate the interior in a frontend collision.
While some three-cylinder vehicles

have lackluster responses with acceleration and road performance, others

offer comparable horsepower to some
larger engines. According to the automotive website Jalopnik, many modern three-cylinder engines offer power
comparable to that offered by V8 engines in the 1970s.
The three-cylinder offerings may be
concentrated to a few brands right now,
but the advantages of these smaller engines may make them more prevalent in
the years to come.

4 changes to make cars eco-friendly

M

any new vehicles are made

with the environment in
mind, as more and more drivers are embracing eco-friendly features
that reduce the carbon footprints of their
vehicles. But motorists need not purchase
new cars to make their driving habits
more environmentally friendly. The following are a handful of steps drivers can
take to protect the environment regardless of how new or old their vehicles are.

maintain your vehicle

Even if your car or truck has no ecofriendly features designed to reduce fuel
consumption and cut down on emissions,
that does not mean the vehicle cannot
be more fuel-efficient or produce fewer
emissions. Adhering to the maintenance

schedule recommended in your vehicle

owners manual can conserve fuel and
cut back on potentially harmful emissions. Well-maintained vehicles burn
less fuel, as they dont force engines and
other components to work as hard during operation as vehicles that have not
been taken care of. Replace worn down
or dirty spark plugs, which misfire and
waste fuel, and fuel and air filters once
they are no longer operating at peak capacity. Address any issues that arise with
your vehicles emissions systems immediately, visiting your mechanic if the vehicle seems to be sputtering or emitting
any abnormal fumes.

slow down
Driving above the speed limit is not just

dangerous but potentially harmful to the

environment as well. According the United States Department of Energy, each five
miles per hour drivers drive over 50 miles
per hour is akin to adding an additional
$0.14 per gallon for gas. Thats because
driving above 50 miles per hour is far less
fuel-efficient than driving below that figure. So slowing down when posted speed
limits mandate driving 50 miles per hour
or slower is not just safer and more ecofriendly, its better for your wallet as well.

keep cargo off the roof

When you must haul cargo, keep that
cargo in rear-mount cargo boxes or the backseat or trunk of your car rather than the
roof. Rooftop cargo boxes make vehicles less
aerodynamic, reducing highway fuel econ-

omy by as much as 17 percent according to

the U.S. DOE. By comparison, rear-mount
cargo boxes reduce highway fuel economy
by just 2 to 5 percent. If you haul cargo in
your trunk, remove items when your trip is
complete, as excess, unnecessary weight in
the car will reduce its fuel efficiency.

inspect the gas cap

Few drivers may think to examine their
gas caps while filling up at the pump, but
such an inspection may reveal cracks or
other damage that are wasting fuel. When
gas caps are cracked, loose or damaged,
fuel can escape gas tanks as a vapor, wasting fuel and contributing to emissions. If
the cap is in need of replacement, consult
your mechanic, the dealer who sold you
your vehicle or the vehicle manufacturer.
