areful planning, judicious use of Urban

Enterprise Zone (UEZ) funds and boundless
hard work are bringing in business to the City of
Vineland.
Vineland is on the cusp of exciting times, said Sandra
Forosisky, economic development director for the City of
Vineland.
She points to progress in the Industrial Parks in the
northwest section of the city.
Corning [maker of glass and ceramics] bought part of
Gerresheimer Glass and we are discussing possible future
expansion, she said. Bridor USA [bread products] did a
$32 million expansion from 18,000 square feet to 76,000
this past year and is already talking about their next
expansion.
The Siemens building on the corner of Garden and Mill
was sold to PVC pipeline and infrastructure technology
provider Underground Solutions.
Allied Steaks (specialty food maker) purchased a
76,000-square-foot building on Forest Grove Road They
are presently in an 18,000-square-foot building and have
grown substantially.
Lucca Freezer is currently expanding by 100,000
square feet.
Davy Cold Storage expanded 20,000 square feet.
JG Finneran (makers of time-saving products for people
working with laboratory samples) expanded their injection
molding and scientific glass.
We are in discussions with new businesses as well
locating to Vineland in our industrial park, Forososky
added.
When you go for a biotech firm, they ask for your demographicslevels of educationwe cant compete. For
example, in Corning, NY, where Corning is based, the
majority of workers there have PhDs.
We need more education and workforce training.

Three takeout eateries weigh

in on Super Bowl Sundays
super orders. { BY RYAN DINGER }
While the Carolina Panthers and Denver
Broncos prepare for the biggest game of the season on Sunday, food purveyors around Vineland
will be prepping for the biggest business day of
their year: Super Bowl Sunday.
Super Bowl Sunday can be insane, said Joe
Lahr, who manages Primo Hoagies on South
Main Road, with his wife, Coleen, the owner.
The two hours leading up to the game are
probably the busiest two hours we have all year.
Lahr estimated that his business will sell
nearly three times the number of hoagie trays
they would on a normal football Sunday.
For Rob Johnson, who has owned Big Johns
Pizza Queen for the last 11 years, the day usually
consists of turning around upwards of 500 pizzas and 15,000 wings.
Its a good day, but its a very stressful day,
he lamented. Everything we make is fresh and
theres a lot of prep work. Were going from 6:30
a.m. to 10 oclock at night.
Lahr and Johnson, like everyone in the takeout business, understand that there is no work-

Bayside Greenwich
William Penn acknowledged the advantages of the
towns location on the local waterways.

{ 2 } the grapevine | FEBRUARY 3, 2016

reenwich, nestled in the southwest corner of Cumberland

County, may have been conceived as a manor town with
residences housed on 16-acre lots, but it
became much more than that.
The vision of Englishman John
Fenwick, Greenwich was planned around
1675 on land eventually purchased from
Indians who, according to John Warner
Barber in his text Historical Collections of
the State of New Jersey, must have here
had a considerable settlement.
Fenwick did not live to see his town
completed. Instead, as William McMahons
South Jersey Towns reports, his son-in-law
Samuel Hedge, together with William
Penn, Samuel Smith of Smithville, and
Richard Tindall, who had been Fenwicks
principal surveyor, carried out his ideas,
mapping a street starting at Cohansey river
and extending two-and-a-half miles north
toward the town of Salem. An antecedent
of Vinelands Landis Avenue, the road,
dubbed Ye Greate Street, measured 100 feet
wide up to the first bend. After that, it was
90 feet wide to the next bend and 80 feet
wide to Pine Mount Run. On either side
were lots for residences.
According to Michael J. Chiarappas
essay Colonial Greenwich: The Emergence
of a Delaware Bay Port Community, contained in the Vineland Historical and
Antiquarian Societys collection, Greenwichs
maritime orientation reflected the vision of
its planner, John Fenwick, and his desire
that his Quaker brethren cooperate in constructing their houses as a place Chosen
and set out for a Town or City to be built, in
which every Purchaser must have a Part, by
reason of Delaware River for trade.
Cooperation among residents was a key
notion in the settlement of Greenwich, second only to religious tolerance. Fenwick and
Penn, Quakers subject to persecution in
England because of their refusal to become
converts to the Church of England, vowed
that their settlements in the New World
would foster religious equality. Penn, who
served as trustee in the 1660s and 1670s of
the sale of land in South Jersey, then known
as West Jersey, acknowledged the advantages of Greenwichs location on the local
waterways.
But, as Chiarappa points out, aside from
recognizing the benefits of being a port
community, Greenwichs early settlers quickly distinguished themselves by aggressively

banking the watersheds vast expanses of

salt meadows for hay production. Also,
Greenwich, he writes, was meant to
empower the best of what the commercial
and agricultural worlds had to offer.
By 1695, Greenwich was handling cargo
that shipped from foreign ports. According
to McMahon, merchants came from as far
away as Burlington and Philadelphia, then a
small village, to buy goods that were transported in flatwagons or floated up the river
in small barge-like boats. In 1701, the town
became an official West Jersey port of entry,
complete with customs officers. Chiarappa
writes that Greenwichs main role as a port
was to ship goods to Philadelphia where it
would be dispersed to international location, including the West Indies. The towns
exports were agricultural produce, fur
pelts and wood products, including boards
and planks made of oak and pine, and
boards and shingles made from the areas
prized cedar.
When New Jersey decided to divide the
state into three custom districts with only
one port for each, Greenwich became the
South Jersey port, with Burlington and
Perth Amboy serving the central and northern districts. However, Greenwichs waterways, including rivers and creeks, unfortunately made it a prime area for smugglers,
adding to the difficulties of the local customs officers.
As for Greenwichs agricultural endeavors, farmers offered a diversity of crops. A
typical farm in Greenwich raised corn,
wheat, rye, oats and flax, maintained a vegetable garden, and quite often cultivated an
orchard of apple and peach trees,
Chiarappa explains. Most farms supplemented crop growing with varying levels of
investment in livestock, be it cattle, hogs or
sheep. These same farmers engaged in lumbering, fin fishingand shellfisheries.
When Cumberland County was established in 1748, Greenwich served as a temporary county seat, housing the countys
courts and jails until a vote could determine a permanent location. In less than a
year, Bridgeton, then called Cohansey
Bridge, was selected as the new county
seat. McMahon reports that some
Greenwich residents were so incensed
they rode their horses into the tavern
where the ballots were counted and tossed
mugs of beer at the owner. I

the Landis Theater.
Nerys Muller, 16,
was first runnerup; and Rebecca
McDonald, 17, was
second runner-up.
Other girls who
participated were
BiOnce Marie Doyle, 16; Graceline Galan, 16;

day more intense than Super Bowl Sunday.

From the morning hours until around halftime of the game, serving customers
becomes a battle of attrition that can take a
lot out of you. The day is so notorious in
this business, that even those who have not
yet experienced it understand what theyre
in for.
Im feeling pretty nervous about it,
said Nick DiDonado, who co-owns
Cluckers with Mark DelBuono, and brothers, Bryan and Matt DeRossi. Cluckers has
been open on Wheat Road for only seven
months, so this upcoming Super Bowl will
be the first one DiDonado has ever worked.
Still, he knows what the day means for a
group of guys who sell chicken wings.
Theyre projecting that theyll sell in the
area of 18-to-20,000 wings on that day.
Its going to be tough. But well get
through it, he said.
DiDonado, Lahr and Johnson each
know they have to get through it, because
the volume their businesses do on Super
Bowl Sunday is actually a much-needed
boon during what is typically a lean time of
the year. Following the excess spending
around the holidays, local citizens dial it
back in the early part of the New Year, making January and February particularly meager months for local businesses. On Super
Bowl Sunday, there is an influx of sales that
can actually make the end-of-month
reports not so terrifying.
The Super Bowl is like a breath of fresh
air, said Johnson. It gives you that wiggle
room, that room to breathe. It helps me to
know that were going to be OK.
Lahr had a similar response. It is
absolutely a blessing, he said.
For DiDonado, the day is an opportunity
more than anything else. While he expects
the regular Cluckers clientele will be passing through on Sunday, he is also predicting
that the day will help establish a relationship with a set of new customers.
Weve been doing a lot of advertising
around it, he said. I think that will bring
in some new people, and hopefully we can
give them a good experience and turn them
on to us.
For those planning Super Bowl parties,
all three men had the same advice: Order
ahead. In fact, each recommended calling
in orders a few days in advance to both
ensure the quality of the food is the best it
can be, and that customers can get all of the
toppings, condiments, and different variations they want. Waiting until the day-of to
order is a rookie mistake for a Super Bowl
party planner.
Last year, we had to shut the phones off
at 4:30, said Johnson. Each year, he creates a spreadsheet where he estimates the
number of pizzas and wings he can do in an
hour. When the orders begin coming in, he
keeps track. When each hour of the busi-

ness day is filled, he no longer accepts

orders.
There is a such thing as too late, he
said. Its a first-come, first-serve basis. I
hate turning people away. But you have
people call that day with a big order, and
we simply cant do it. We only have so
many fryers and ovens. I

Girl Needs Handicapped Van

My wife JoAnn and I have been
blessed with three wonderful children who have given us our greatest
joys, six healthy grandchildren. We
thank God every day for these amazing miracles. I know that most of
you are blessed in the same way.
I am spearheading a campaign to
raise funds for Zyasia Lovey
Guzman, a severely handicapped
young lady here in Vineland, to help
the family pay her huge medical bills
and purchase a handicapped accessible van for her. With the expertise
and donated time of a talented
young aspiring filmmaker name
Joseph Bottino (yes, hes Father
Bottinos nephew who just graduated
Rowan College) produced a video
which we posted on Youtube.com,
showing her and her families daily
struggles. Just go to youtube.com
and type in Love for Lovey.
Her family has set up a
GoFundMe Account to help raise the
much needed funds. Go to
www.gofundme.com/support-forlovey to donate any amount that
you wish. Also available on
www.facebook.com/teamloveyneverloosinghope.
Her family struggles every day to
keep her life as happy and normal
as possible, while trying to deal with
and manage her health issues and
the very large medical costs. Just
transporting her to all the appointments is a major operation in their
small very old standard van.
We are truly blessed by God with
our children, their health and our
good fortunes in life. I know you will
agree and it has been said many
times over the years, BUT FOR THE
GRACE OF GOD GO I. I have come
to realize that God sometimes puts
people in our lives for a reason, as a
reminder of how blessed we really
are. Loveys family is wonderful with
her, but I think God in his special
way is asking us to help. I thank you
so very much for your anticipated
help in our efforts!

Order Strawberry Plants and

Asparagus Crowns from 4-H
Heres your chance to order Earliglow
strawberry plants and Jersey Knight
asparagus crowns from the Cumberland
County 4-H Advisory Committee at a great
price, only $8 for a bundle of 25 strawberry
plants and $13 for 10 asparagus crowns.
Earliglow is a popular June-bearing
variety that grows well in nearly all soil
types and will produce medium to large,
full-flavored fruit for eating fresh or for
freezing. This variety is a proven winner
for its flavor and is disease resistant.
Jersey Knight was selected for its disease tolerance to fusarium. It has a more
open branch structure as compared to
Jersey Giant and therefore may be less
prone to disease. Asparagus plants are
planted in trenches. Trenches are made 4
feet apart and 8 inches deep. Plants are
then set ideally 8 to 12 inches between
crowns so garden space available is a consideration.
The plants will be available for local

Team was able to safely recover two

motorists. One of the motorists had been
stranded for approximately six hours. An
additional motorist was located, but
refused emergency aid and chose to stay
with his vehicle.
Cumberland County Freeholder
Director and Public Safety Liaison Joe
Derella said, This is a perfect example
how important this heavy duty equipment
is to County Government. Our Sheriffs
Department was directly responsible for
ensuring the motorists safety. Without this
equipment, it would not have been possible. I applaud Sheriff Austino and his entire
Team for their forward thinking approach
to ensuring the safety of our residents.

Code Blue Youth Scholarship

Announced
Dr. Robin Weinstein, president and
founder of the M25 Initiative and
Chairman of the Cumberland County Code
Blue Coalition, has announced that the
Initiative will be offering three $500 scholarships to Cumberland County College students who volunteer for 30 hours or more
during the Code Blue Season.
Code Blue not only provides a warm
meal, bed, and shelter during winter
weather but it offers the volunteers a
chance to be transformed through service,
said Weinstein. Our community college is
a great resource to our county and we want

to give the students an opportunity to lead

through service in Code Blue and to help
further their education to make a positive
impact in society.
Three scholarships are available to a
student who volunteers in one of the three
municipal Code Blue programs. Students
must be enrolled full-time at the time of
application and be between the ages of 1825 with a GPA of 3.5 or greater and must be
a resident of Cumberland County. .plications are required to submit an essay on
their time with the Code Blue Program.
To apply, students should go to
www.m25initiative.org. The application
deadline is April 1, 2016. I

Disaster Response Unit Makes

Big Impact during Snowstorm

the grapevine { 7 }

In preparation for the snow storm that

slammed Cumberland County on the weekend of January 22, Cumberland County
Sheriff Robert Austino and members of the
County Sheriffs Disaster Response Unit
opened a Command Center at the Sheriffs
Department to prepare for the pending
weather.
The Disaster Response Unit was created
as a result of the Federal Governments
donation of some large military vehicles to
the Cumberland County Sheriffs
Department to be used for disaster
response. The vehicles worked excellent
during the storm. They encountered roadways that were virtually impassable with
drifts as high as 6 feet. The ability of these
vehicles to traverse these types of hazards
proved very reliable.
On Friday January 22, Sheriff Austino
ordered several pieces of equipment to be
staged in strategic locations throughout the
county to assist with any requests for emergency aid that might arise. The eight member unit was called into action throughout
the weekend. On Saturday, January 23, random patrols were conducted for security,
and to monitor weather conditions.
Welfare checks were also conducted to
ensure people were safe. On Sunday
January 24, 2016k a The Woodstown State
Police Barracks in Salem County requested
mutual aid. Officers of the Disaster
Response Unite were deployed to assist
motorists who were stranded in snow drifts
near Upper Pittsgrove Township. The

n last weeks column, I mentioned

that Vineland will have the honor in
the spring of hosting one of Main
Street New Jerseys Downtown
Institutes. This will a day-long workshop
on Wednesday, April 27, and will bring representatives from Main Street districts
throughout New Jersey right to our front
door. Well be hosting this event, which
takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at
Grant Plaza, 619 E. Landis Avenue.
These workshops, held four times a year,
were originally called Downtown
Revitalization and Management Institutes
(DRMI), and, at one time, all held at
Thomas Edison State College in Trenton. A
few years ago, Main Street New Jersey
decided to take them on the road all over
New Jersey. Each Downtown Institute deals
with a specific part of the Main Street FourPoint ApproachOrganization, Design,
Promotions, and Economic Restructuring.
We will be hosting the Downtown
Institute dealing with Creating, Branding,
and Promoting Local and Regional
Destinations. The facilitator will be Roger
Brooks, one of the worlds premier destination creation experts. This program will be
of interest especially to public and private
officials, downtown management staff and
volunteers, business groups, and anyone
else looking for inspired training in making
their communityand our communityall
that it can be. We, in Main Street Vineland,
are involved in a major rebranding initiative for our downtown, so this will fit in
exactly with what we are doing.
A continental breakfast and afternoon

snack are included as part of the program

and American Institute of Architects (AIA)
Continuing Education Credits are pending.
Heres more good news about this! You
dont have to pay the $80 price that this
workshop would normally cost. Thanks in
part to sponsorship from Century Savings
Bank, its free! We have a link on the home
page of our Main Street Vineland website
www.mainstreetvineland.orgwhere you
can reserve your spot. Its that simple! So
lets roll out the red carpet for our guests
from around the state and show the best
that downtown Vineland has to offer.
***
Remember that on Wednesday, February
3, were having our second cash assault. This
one will take place at Spataros Pizza and
Italian Specialties in the Landis MarketPlace
building, 631 E. Landis Avenue, from 11 a.m.
to 7 p.m. Frank Spataro will have some of his
tasty Italian foodpizza and a variety of
other disheson hand, including some great
specials. So head on down there and show
him your support. Well be having cash
assaults once a month.
The next evening, February 4, from 5:30
to 7 p.m., well have our second Downtown
Merchant Meet-and-Greet at Friends and
Family Diner (formerly Landis Diner), at
601 E. Landis Avenue. This is a networking
event for our downtown merchants to
socialize, get to know each other, and hear
the latest news from Main Street Vineland.
Well be having these every other month on
the first Thursday. We encourage all downtown businesses to come out and enjoy this
networking opportunity. I

Business 2016

The former Newcomb Hospital campus
at Chestnut and Howard is about to be
divided up into a five-lot subdivision.
The Newcomb site plan has been submitted to the Planning Board for a five-lot
subdivision. It will consist of a 70-unit
assisted living facility, and two independent
living facilities with 70 units each. The old
Cunningham Wing will be used for a future
training facility and a portion of the
Emergency Room will be a City EMS office.
Demolition of the old hospital will start as
soon as they get site plan approval.
In the near future, JC Penney is going to
become a Dicks Sporting Goods at the
Cumberland Mall.
I can tell you that Planet Fitness is
looking to locate in Vineland, but they have
made no announcement yet, said Forosisky.
IHOP (International House of Pancakes) is
expected to be open in May. It is going to

ANTONS FLORIST is a retail florist specializing in wedding and funeral designs as
well as unique and creative everyday
arrangements. The business started in about
1950 as Grassos Florist, selling mostly gladiolias in the summer to shore travelers. From
1960 to 1974, Alvinos Florist became a fullservice florist. From 1974 through 2009,
Antons Florist was owned by the Antonelli
family and in 2009 was passed along to present owner and 38-year employee Bob Zadra.
Starting out with just two to four
employees, the florist currently employs 12.
Over the years, the number of weddings has
grown from several per year to slightly over
100 in 2015. Daily orders have increased
greatly and Antons has become the areas

go-to funeral florist. Their delivery area now

includes parts of four counties.
The business participates in several wedding shows a year and just had a very successful show at the Eastlyn Golf Course.
Antons was awarded the best exhibit of all
the vendors there.
In 2016, Antons hopes to increase sales
and let customers know they get better value
by calling directly. Online order takers are
middle men who take your order and charge
a large fee just to call Antons to make up the
order. Antons invites customers to call and
give one of their designers the opportunity to
create a personalized arrangement instead of
one of the cookie-cutter designs pictured on
websites, which are more expensive and usually smaller than they can do when you call
them personally.
ARTISTIC TOUCH BEADS is a small bead
store in Millville that offers beads, beading
supplies, classes, birthday parties, jewelry
making parties, jewelry repair, finished jewelry and more. The store is located in Millvilles
picturesque Village on High, in a cottage surrounded by charming gardens and other
unique locally owned shops.
Kim Conner opened Artistic Touch Beads
in 2014. Artistic Touch Beads offers experiences, not just shopping, where someone with
no craft or beading background can make
beautiful jewelry. Theres plenty of shopping,
too, but also small classes where you learn
techniques from an experienced jewelry maker.
Artistic Touch Beads started out with one
employee with the occasional help of friends
and family. A teen instructor is the owners
niece. She turned out to be such a great
instructor that she teaches adult classes, too.
Currently, the biggest issue is more space
for birthday parties and Bling Bar jewelrymaking events, and they are looking to host
these events elsewhere on a per-use basis.
In the coming year, they plan to expand

COLONIAL FLOWERS is a full-service
flower and gift shop. The business was started
in 1974 by Marion Smith. It started out as a
family business, owned by two generations of
the Smith Family for 38 years. Purchased by
Larry and Debbie Malone in 2011, it remains a
family-owned and -operated business today
and employs five people. The Malones have
seen a significant increase in prom business
and have doubled their wedding business this
year. They have also improved their website

and Facebook page.

At the flower shop, they are excited about
the upcoming years and the increase in business they have already seen. Colonial Flowers
is now preparing to increase bridal and event
sales by participating in shows throughout the
area. The staff continues to train in order to
keep up with the latest trends in the flower
industry.
They are currently updating the look and
feel of the gift shop to give it more of a boutique shopping experience. The owners are
constantly on the lookout for unique items to
sell. Colonial Flowers owners and staff are
always researching the latest in floral and gift
trends. Colonial Flowers is excited about being
part of the growing Arts District in Millville.
GAROPPO STONE AND GARDEN CENTER is a service-oriented business serving all
of South Jersey. The friendly and knowledgeable staff are ready to help in any project you
may havefrom a small garden to commercial
paver installations.
The business was started in 1973 by Pat
Garoppo as a trucking company. A few years
later, he saw the need in the community for
stone and garden products with an emphasis
on personal and knowledgeable service.
Garoppo will always strive to have products
that are needed and useful to customers and
have found themselves with an ever-expanding inventory.
The center has always been a family business and their secret is that they consider and
treat customers as family. Pat and Judy
Garoppo are always investing in new ways to
please their customers. For example, they
have expanded their masonry tools and have a
complete selection of SRW sealers and cleaners. They also have a complete line of outdoor
LED lighting from Focus Industries. And as
always, if they dont have something youre
looking for, they will find it for you.
The outlook for 2016 is based on their cus-

tomer service and great line of products and

the most important part is you, the customer.
Their customer loyalty is at an all-time high,
and with your help, they are looking to have
a great year.
HAIR WITH FLAIR is a Paul Mitchell Focus
Salon. The business was started in 2005 by
owner Carol Frey. At that time, she employed
four people, a number that has grown to
seven. The salon just relocated after 10 years
and has maintained a strong customer loyalty
along with steady growth. The new location
in Larrys II Plaza includes state-of-the-art
stations and equipment. The outlook for 2016
and beyond is very prosperous, says Frey.
JOHNSONS TRUCK is full-service truck
and auto repair facility specializing in diesel
medium to heavy duty trucks. The business
was opened in 2010 by owners Jimmy and
Theresa Johnson. At that time, Jimmy was
the technician and Theresa did all clerical
and customer service. Today, the staff has
grown to seven, including daughter Jessica as
service advisor and son Anthony in training
to become a general service mechanic. The
business has outgrown the original shop in
Folsom and relocated to Harding Highway in
October 2013. Also, the business now specializes in diesel and RV repair as well as automobiles.
At Johnsons, educating and informing is a
huge part of what they provide to the customer. Adaptations include upgrading the shop
to paperless and wireless programs. Customers
receive clear and detailed estimates, invoices
and courtesy checks via their e-mail, cell
phone or printed. These include pricing,
detailed description of work and photos showing any issues or concerns that are noticed.

mendations and repairs with customers. A

major turning point occurred in 2013 when
they moved from a small three-bay shop to
their large six-bay shop and hired three more
people. Any secrets to success that you can
share: We are smart enough to know that we
dont know enough. We are proud alumni
member of ATI and with their guidance we
have been able to run our shop efficiently, have
first crack at the latest technology for our
industry and be accountable to providing
excellent customer service at a fair price.
The economy appears to slowly be turning
around. With the loss of full motor vehicle
inspections, vehicle services seem to be on the
backburner for a lot of people, which has
increased the amount of repairs we see. We
hope to see it turn around to more services and
less high-cost repairs, with the economy starting to look up.

Mainieros was founded in 1908 by Biagio
Mainiero, originally a barber, during a time of
early growth in the Vineland area. It has been
a family-owned and -operated business for
four generations and this has been an important part of the its success story. Keeping a finger on the pulse of daily activities and in personal contact with customers keeps things
running smoothly.
Today, the company employs a dozen people. There have been several expansions of the
business, each one adding more products, display and warehouse space. The present
13,000-square-foot store showcases hundreds
of appliances, TVs and vacuums and stores
tens of thousands of appliance and vacuum
parts.
Some things never change no matter how
long a business has been around. Like offering
a mix of products and services that customers
need. And being accessible, knowledgeable
and responsive to any situation that may occur.
When you call Mainieros somebody will
always answer the phone!
From Mainieros humble barber shop
beginning there have been many changes.
Product additions began with razors, jewelry,
small electrical appliances when they became

available and, eventually, larger household

appliances and TVs. And with the increased
product offerings came several moves to larger
stores and additional employees.
Imagine the changes a 105-year-old business has experienced. Biagio Mainiero traveled
by horse and buggy to visit his customers
when he first started out and appliances were
deliverd by train direct from the factories to
Mainieros downtown Vineland Store. And
electrical appliances were cutting-edge products back then. Inventories and customer payments were written on cards or logged in
books. All ordering and correspondence was
by mail or phone. And the downtown area was
the only place to shop in Vineland.
The major turning point for Mainieros
came about 50 years ago after moving to 201
Landis Avenue and then soon after expanding
that store, quadupling its size. Last fall
Mainieros added a couple hundred more
square feet of appliance display area and
upgraded to new brighter lighting inside and
outside. And this year, as soon as the weather
allows, the store will undergo a facade and signage update that will increase their presence
and visibility on Delsea Drive.
The Mainiero family has lived, shopped
and done business in South Jersey for more
than 100 years. Many of their customers are
second- or third-generation shoppers who, like
their parents and friends, trust Mainieros to
help them make the right choices when purchasing appliances, TVs, and vacuums, as well
as parts and service after the sale.

more than ever. Mainieros will continue to
search out the best values to help customers
choose the best product for them at the lowest
possible price. After a better than industry
sales increase last year, Mainiero's will continue to do what the big stores cant do by providing outstanding product knowledge and personal service. And customers can always get

MARCACCI MEATS is a full-service butcher
shop that offers beef, pork, lamb, goat, and
poultry. They also carry a variety of smoked
products, hot dogs, deli and frozen goods.
Marcacci Meats was founded about 55
years ago by John Marcacci, Sr. At the time,
four people were employed. Now there are 15
employees at Marcacci.
Marcacci has always been a family owned
and operated business. The Marcacci family
ran the business for about 45 years. The
Silpagar family purchased the business 10
years ago, with 2016 marking the 10th year
anniversary. It is still owned and operated by
family members. Transitions from generation
to generation has a lot to do with technology.
As technology increases, business has to
change with it. So the younger generation
helps a lot with that.
The customer base has greatly increased,
with some customers travelling about an hour
to purchase fresh meats. Customers stock up
for the month and keep returning with friends

and family. With the increase of customers,

sales have also increased steadily, every year.
Marcacci Meats is currently working on
their new, larger location for their store. They
have been working on the building for about 18
months and should be ready to open this
spring. The new store is located at 1159 North
Delsea Drive Vineland, NJ 08360. It is a large
investment but they are ready and excited to
open and offer customers much more. They
will carry fresh produce and full line of deli to
make subs.
With the opening of a new location, the outlook is positive. Marcacci is hoping to keep
serving their current customers and invite
news ones to experience the difference when
shopping at Marcacci. They want everyone to
have a one-stop shop for their necessity food
items. They want to continue to serve South
Jersey and surrounding areas for many more
years.
THE PIN CUSHION is a fabric and quilt shop.
It carries a wide variety of notions, and fabrics
including quilting cotton, bridal satin and lace,
upholstery, vinyl and foam, yarn and needlework books and supplies.
In 1972, Connie and Jim Renauro decided
to buy Weitzmans fabrics store from its retiring owner. The Pin Cushion was born, sharing
a building with Martinis Shoes at 613 Landis
Avenue. In those days, there were several
other fabric stores in the area and many
department stores also carried fabric. Most

Business 2016
Continued from previous page
customers were the stay-at-home moms.
By 1979, times were getting tough, so
Connies father started PC Fabrics, a wholesale
fabric company. Business continued to thrive.
In January 1985, they moved to the Vineland
Shopping Center at 22 W Landis Avenue. They
extended their hours to match mall hours.
With the father now retired, sisters Gina
and Kim, continued to run the wholesale business from a different location. Lisa continues
to run The Pin Cushion, still at 22 W. Landis.
In 2011, she bought the properties on 657 N.
Delsea Drive, where the business currently
resides; the sales floor is 1,000 feet bigger than
the old location.
Last February, the shop opened a Sewing
Studio, located in a adjacent building. To celebrate, they held a workshop and since then,
have had workshops for 4-H, Girl Scouts,
schools and other organizations. They also
have Charity Tuesdays, workshops to benefit
different organizations. Right now, they are
making quilts for the vets at the Memorial
Home and pillowcases for Ryans Cases for
Smiles. Bring your sewing machines and skills
to share in a good cause.
The Pin Cushion has been holding sewing,
quilting, crocheting and painting classes since
2007. They recently added knitting classes and
childrens birthdays parties. They are working
on the final stage of the renovations, which

includes the outside of the building. This winter, they are going to open up an additional
classroom.
There are four sales associates and six
instructors presently working at the store. The
owners two daughters assist with the web site,
Facebook page, store displays, and customers
when needed.
RIENZI BRIDAL SALON has been in business
at the same location since 1945 and is a local
family-owned and -operated business. Rienzis
has always been an active business supporting
downtown Vineland and the local community.
Rienzis has nine part-time employees. The
bridal salon has had many phases of growth
through the years. The first expansion was in
the early 1970s, which made the store double
the original store size with the rental of the
store behind the corner frontage. This allowed
Rienzis to offer bridal customers a larger
selection of designs. As the years progressed,
they added more designers and products. In
2013 they expanded the store to double the
existing store space. Expansion and remodeling gave them the ability to offer a beautiful
experience for the bride and her party while
shopping. Many brides and customers want
personalized service when shopping for their
special day and event. Internet shopping does
not offer all the services needed to go along
with gown shopping, fittings, and preparation
for that special day. Experience and service is
priceless.
Rienzis is looking forward to 2016 having

SIR SPEEDY PRINTING is a print, sign, and
marketing company. The business was started
in 1980 by Orville and Ginger Chase. The business has approximately six employees. The
Chases hired Alison Trovarelli as their customer service manager, and she worked for
them for 20 years. In 2014 the business was
purchased by Alisons aunt, Ann Bauman and
Alison is the Managing Partner. Sir Speedy is
expanding their product line with signs and
banners with the purchase of a 63-inch wideformat Latex printer, so that they can furhter
expand that part of the business. The 2016 outlook: We are changing our direction a bit. We
are still doing offset printing; now we are more
into digital printing and heading into signs,
banners and marketing.
ST. MARY SCHOOL is a premier Catholic
elementary school that has been serving the
Cumberland, Atlantic and Gloucester County
communities for over 55 years. In September
1959, St. Mary School opened with kindergarten and first-grade classes. The school grew
each year by one classroom until 1968. In 1963,

the all-purpose cafeteria and hall was added;

in 1966, the South Wing was added; in 1981 an
8th grade classroom and science lab were
added and, in 1995 a Music Room and Pre-K
room were added. In 2009 a gym, cafeteria and
stage was added and the existing all-purpose
cafeteria was renovated into a Library/Media
Center, an Art Room, Music Room and Pre K
classrooms.
Fr. John Positano, OSA, Fr. Angelo
Allegrini, The Daughters of Mercy, The
Bertonazzi and Quinn families and many other
St. Mary Church parishioners worked together
to build this Catholic elementary school in
East Vineland.
St. Marys currently employs 50 and is
among a growing number of Catholic schools
that has added an Advancement Director position, which focuses on enrollment and development. The family approach, smart planning,
transparency and data management has
allowed St. Mary School to grow enrollment to
300 students and the development of missionbased fundraising has allowed the school to
raise over $650,000 through the Annual Fund
and PTA functions in the past four years.
These funds have offset all student tuitions,
funded the 1:1 Digital Initiative, the purchase
of iPads and laptops, facility improvements
and upgrades, professional development and
provides tuition assistance to families that
qualify.
St. Mary School continues to evolve both
inside and outside the traditional classroom
programs that meet the needs of students.

Curriculum is regularly updated and the

school has taken the best of the Common Core
to develop Math and Language Arts curriculums along with a new science curriculum
based on Next Generation Science Standards.
Extra-curricular programs meet a variety of
interests and include a drama department,
choir, band, National Junior Honor Society,
Student Council, basketball, volleyball, cross
country; Homework, Library, Chess, and
Yearbook clubs.
St. Marys is one of a handful of schools that
have a full-time Media Integrationist on staff
and a technology committee comprised of faculty, administration and parents that review
the technology implementation. Students are
now equipped with personal Chromebooks
that have replaced textbooks, all subjects
include an online component, students utilize
iPads and web-based programming, and faculty have integrated technology into all core curriculum subjects.
St. Mary School has recently been regionalized to include the St. Padre Pio Parish in
Vineland, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament
Parish in Newfield and The Parish of All Saints
in Millville. The regionalization has allowed St.
Mary School to provide Catholic education to
more students in Cumberland, Atlantic and
Gloucester counties.

kitchen and bathroom cabinet dealer in the
South Jersey and Philadelphia area. The business saw an increase from 2015 of about 15
percent in year over year volume. As a representative for one of the more respected kitchen
cabinet manufacturers in the country, Tri-City
Kitchens was recognized for over 25 years in
partnership with Teddwood Cabinetry in 2015.
New relationships were built within the
Philadelphia and Jersey Shore markets. Two
additional employees were added to the TriCity staff in 2015.
2016 and Beyond: Tri-City Kitchen hopes
to expand its improved builders grade cabinet
options. New relationships with overseas manufacturers and importers have allowed TriCity Kitchens to have the newest trends in
value-based kitchen cabinetry. This sector of
the market is expected to be a larger part of
the kitchen and bathroom cabinetry business
and Tri-City Kitchens is positioning itself to be
a major part of this trend. New computerassisted renderings are being offered as part of
the design experience. Bringing interactive
software directly to the consumers home has
been important in allowing the customer to
see the product before its delivered.
Tri-City Kitchens hopes to plan events
related to their 45th anniversary for growing
consumer and builder base.

YIS KARATE OF VINELAND offers traditional martial art instruction to strengthen the
body, mind, and spirit. The business was started in 1982 by Master Dwayne Reed. Business
climate was good, there were not many martial
art schools and none in Vineland that taught
Tang Soo Do.
At that time, one instructor and a part time
administrator were employed. Todays staff
includes one chief instructor and three part
time instructors. Grandmaster Ki Yun Yi is
president of the International Martial Arts
Association, which oversees all IMA schools.
Yis Karate has stayed the same in that they
teach the traditional martial art of Tang Soo
Do much the same way with the same traditional values. They have more children training now as parents have become aware of the
life-long benefits Tang Soo Do offers.
Adaptations include an emphasis on character development and leadership skills, especially in the youth classes, and the use of
social media. Business has been steady
through the years as they strive to deliver an
excellent and consistent product. They do not
jump on whatever fad may be popular and
they dont try to be everything to everyone.
They stay true to their traditions and work to
impart the wealth of knowledge and skill that
is Tang Soo Do.
Yis has found, for the most part, that those
who see the benefits that Tang Soo Do has to
offer themselves or their children will train
because it gives them a brighter future. I
of Ophthalmology. He as been asked to
teach other physicians how to provide
DROPLESS Cataract Surgery to their
patients. EA increased their new patients
growth again this year by 23%. Average
growth is 20%.
2016 outlook: EA is implementing
more patient access to their patient portal with their electronic medical records
system and presenting a whole new
package to their patients, including
patient communication and education.
Dr. Tyson will be participating in a new
study starting in the first of the year. This
again is a glaucoma device that will help
lower the intraocular pressure in glaucomatous eyes. The reason for Dr. Tysons
focus on glaucoma is due to its dangerous ultimate threat of blindness.
However, with these devices the threat is
lessened greatly.
EA will continue on with their community services. They will participate in lectures and health fairs in the community
promoting eye health and safety. They
will also continue to give back to the
community with volunteerism and contributions as they have since 1999.
More lectures are in store for Dr.
Tyson. He will also be providing a series
of Webinars in the evening when surgeons will have more time to participate.
As always, Eye Associates will continue providing the latest in technology and
services for all eye care needs.

Welcome Message
The GVCC is off to a very busy start for 2016! We held a variety of events in
January and we were pleased to have attendance levels so high. Its wonderful to see
people getting involved and participating in their memberships whenever they can.
We are working hard to offer some great events in the coming months. If you have
never attended one of our monthly Meet & Greets, consider doing it! We get big
crowds at these events and lots of valuable networking takes place. These are free
for members to attend!
NEW this year is another networking opportunity for members: Wake & Shake
events to be held six times in 2016, all in the morning at 8:30am. So you can wake
up and shake some hands! In addition to the networking opportunity, everyone
who attends these events has the opportunity to record
a video interview with me and we will post it through
social media using our Facebook and Twitter accounts.
This is FREE to attend and FREE promotion for your
business. All the new Wake & Shake events are listed
on our website under the events tab. You must be a
member to register.
Are you interested in serving on our chamber
board of directors? Applications are now available on
our website or by contacting our office. Deadline for
completed applications is March 1, 2016.

He also described it as a full continuum of care, including specialty and

advanced care so you dont have to
cross the river or go out of the state to
get the care you need.
Improved access is also part of the
mission, Way said.
Its very unique for a community our
size to have a residency program, Way
said, and it was built in just three
years.
The key affiliations are with Rowan
Orthopedic Medicine, Nemours duPont
Hospital for Children, Cooper
Healthcare, and Jefferson.
With a new urgent care center
opened on West Landis Avenue in
Vineland in July 2015, there are now
four centers, with three additional
opening in 2016 and three more yet to
be prioritized.
Way noted that Inspiras total community benefit is more than $81 million, which includes uncompensated
care and subsidized services, yet the
healthcare network is taxed $250/bed
daily. I dont think we should be taxed,
Way said, and cautioned that community colleges and churches may be next.
Michelle Marshall, assistant vice
president of Oncology and Womens
Health Service Lines, then took to the
podium. She said its okay if someone
decides to go elsewhere because of personal preference, but she would never
want someone to leave our community
because they didnt know what was
available. She pointed to the Scarpa
Cancer Center and specialized procedures such as stereotactic breast cancer
treatment as ways Inspira is dedicated
to being at the forefront of cancer medicine and healthcare in general.

On the second Tuesday of January, 2016, the legislative session
ended and a new two-year session began. To begin this new session,
there were 167 pages that were pre-filed. These pages contained
3,340 bills! Normally, the Governor has 45 days (or 45 days until the
House of origination is back in session) to sign a bill, veto it or conditionally veto it. That rule stops every two years at the end of a session. If no action on the bill occurs seven days after the new session
begins, any bill not signed becomes a pocket veto. Any bill not voted
on by both houses also invalidates.
A1812 was SIGNED INTO LAW at the end of the session. This bill
extends protections of the new vehicle lemon law to new farm
tractors purchased or leased in New Jersey.
**We are pleased this bill passed as our Legislative
Committee has supported this proposed legislation for about 10
years, since it is important to our agricultural community.
The following bills were recently POCKET VETOED*:
A943 Permits small businesses to qualify for loans from NJEDA for
costs of energy audit and making energy efficiency or conservation
improvements.
A2026 Realigning the transfer inheritance tax payment due date to
coincide with payment due dates for State and Federal estate taxes.

Staying with patients so family
members can get a much-needed rest
Reading, or providing a comforting touch
Playing or singing soothing music
to patients
Keeping vigil with patients in
their final hours
Providing a friendly visit to lift a
patients spirits
Providing special veteran volunteer support to patients who are veterans
Certified Pet Visitors
Helping with office support tasks
at the agency
These and other tasks are why hospice volunteers are such an essential
part of the Heartland experience.
Currently, they are also in need of
military veterans willing to visit other
veterans. The need is great for veteran
volunteers to visit others who have
served our country. The bond is only
what another veteran understands.
Volunteer training is offered
throughout the year to fit each persons schedule. Call the volunteer
coordinator at 609-641-4675 for more
information.
