2012: Where do we go from here?

Characterized by change, the past year in technology certainly
stands out as one filled with shocks and surprises. Against this
backdrop of crisis and chaos, we collectively try to gain some perspective on the coming year in technology and, can we expect
a similarly tumultuous ride in 2012.
The past year has shown us former industry leaders stumbling
in the face of missed trends, while others have made enormous
gains in creating new value. Asian players are rising fast, even as
service disasters humble several established providers. And, many
of the largest global companies have faced unprecedented leadership challenges.
Yet despite concerns about security in the Cloud (computing),
and the security risks associated with software-based ecosystems,
the shift from hardware- to software-based business models is
accelerating. Large players are scrambling to take advantage of
these new areas of opportunity quickly by acquiring newer, smaller
players-though rapidly rising valuations have slowed this activity
somewhat. And the patent wars, particularly over control of critical mobile technologies, have led to renewed large-scale mergers
and acquisitions.
The tragic 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan and floods
ravaging Thailand provided a stark illustration of the interconnectedness and vulnerability of the global technology supply

chain. The resulting production problems cut off delivery of many

popular products. In the coming year, large technology companies
will be looking to mitigate the effect of these improbable black
swan events on their operations.
Flexible product portfolios: These emerging capabilities, however, will not bear fruit if high-tech firms cannot bring outstanding products and services to market quickly. The classic technology
development cycle on which large companies have long depended
is increasingly being outpaced and outsmarted by smaller, more
agile firms. To some degree, that does bode well at home here in
Canada, as our electronic landscape is dotted with many, exciting
high-complexity tech silos.
Industry pundits will get a firsthand view of the latest trends in
consumer electronic trends, as the CES show appears in Las Vegas
this January. Meanwhile, I will personally be visiting Thailand
on a media junket this month to tour that countrys electronic
infrastructure and listen to its leaders plans on rebuilding. Stay
tuned for more.

Connectors & Terminal Blocks

Theres much to consider when sourcing

I/O connectors for
harsh environments
By Fred Kozlof, tech support, Conec Corp.

Despite all the warnings to avoid

use of electrical devices in wet
areas, it seems that designers are
working at a fast pace to create
devices that play well with water.
Traditionally, most electronic boxes
have been located in a sheltered, controlled environment. However, the proliferation of electronics into every industry
has resulted in the need for designers
to give serious consideration to enclosure and connector design elements that
ensure a reliable product function for use
in every environmental condition.
The most common harsh environment
applications are found in the factory
automation market, outdoor communications, portable or vehicle-mounted
instrumentation or navigation systems,
and security/surveillance equipment. The
most common I/O connectors are D-subs,
M12 and M8, RJ45 for Ethernet, USB 2.0,
and LC fiber optic.

Sealing against liquid ingress

Just how sealed is a sealed connector? The industry has defined a range
of Ingress Protection (IP) ratings, represented by a two-digit number. The
first digit indicates the ability to shield
against intrusion of foreign objects or
particles, and the second digit indicates
the strength of which the connections
ability to withstand various levels of
pressure. Within the context of this article, the main ratings all start with a 6,
which represents sealing against liquid:

tank. Hermetic-rated connectors are often

IP68 tends to be an application-specific rating, so
there is no universal set of
tests. Thus, details are unique
to the application and specified by the designer. This can
range from a continuous low

filled with dielectric oil), to

PowerStrip 9550 In a Class of Its Own

The PowerStrip 9550 is a modular cut
and strip machine available in four basic
configurations to cover a wide range of wire
processing applications. Shielded cable and
complex multi-conductor applications can
be processed in one automated operation.
Processing modules, such as the programmable cutter head system and rotary incision
unit allow for a customized, application
oriented configuration. All processing and
functional modules can be retrofitted at a
later date, making the PowerStrip 9550 a
future-proof investment.

exotic materials (see Figure 1).

Conec manufactures versatile D-sub
connectors that can perform in a wide
variety of applications.
In addition to retaining integrity in
water, components also must withstand
various lubricants, fuels, test chemical
agents, or gases. Thus, typical connector
materials might not be suitable for this
type of application. Design engineers
need to calibrate their selection of component materials to account for all chemical aspects in the operating environment
including where the device will be located
geographically, since cold climates pose
different environmental challenges than
warm locations.
Ethernet RJ45 connectors and USB
ports are available in sealed configurations and for harsh environments,
including factory automation, outdoor
instrumentation, navigation, or communications equipment. The connector bodies are available in a variety of plastics,
or even die-cast zinc.
With connectors, there is no one size
fits all recommendation for material compatibility. The designer must optimize the
product selection based on all aspects of
the application environment.

Temperature
Anytime a device is used outside of
a controlled environment, temperature
extremes are sure to be a concern.
Because of this, the normal temperature
range of -25C to +85C is extended down
to -40C or -55C, and up to 105C or 150C.
Many connectors can withstand these
extremes, but unique challenges should
be considered. For example, thermal
shock requirements can challenge even
the most stringent MIL-spec standards,
let alone commercial I/O connectors.
Factoring in the need for sealing, plus the
thermal shock parameters, choices quickly
become limited. Most catalog specifications do not detail thermal shock, so if
this is important, designers must ensure
the selected connector product testing
matches these needs.
In the factory automation area, for
example, using the circular family of
connectors (e.g. M12 and M8) is optimal. Some are designed to withstand
long-term exposure to 125C and 150C for
2,000 to 8,000 hours but most are rated
from -30C to +85C, which is adequate
for the typical sensor application. Again,
selected connectors must be evaluated to
the specific environmental needs of the
application.
Conecs SAL series connectos can operate at extreme temperatures up to 125C.

FLEXCERTAINTY

Flexible printed circuits do

BIG THINGS IN SMALL SPACES

Careful planning in the design process is key to success

By Steve Kelly, president, PFC Flexible Circuits Ltd.

Flexible printed circuits are one of the fastest-growing

segments of the electronics manufacturing industry. This
technology allows electronics to be mounted onto flexible
plastic in order to fit circuit boards into curved surfaces,
tiny spaces, or to enable circuit boards to actually move
or flex during the products intended use. The circuitry is
printed directly onto the plastic using photolithography,
or may be embedded between layers of plastic through a
laminating process.
Todays sophisticated packaging requires complex electrical and mechanical interfaces, and as miniaturization
demands increased performance from each component,
flexible printed circuits are one of the few products that
can provide the necessary mechanical and electrical
interfaces in a cost-effective solution. The technology
is ideal for small electronics, such as cameras and cell
phones, and its a key innovation behind numerous common and specialty applications.
But for flex circuits to perform the way their designers

intend, a total integrated design and

manufacturing package is required,
one that includes not only the flex
substrate and its circuits, but virtually every minuscule component
that is attached to it.
Flexible printed circuit assembly is much different than assembling a printed circuit board. Good
circuit design, materials, panel
layout, temperatures, component
placement requirements, and oven flow are all critical factors in
creating an assembly that works the first time.

Design to deliver
There is always the potential for improvement in the product
development process, which impacts the time to market. One
manufacturer of flexible circuits, PFC, actively advocates that

customers and prospects utilize the companys expertise in the early stages of
development to assist in creating a buildable, producible, and repeatable solution.
The upfront assistance saves the customer both time and money in the long run.
Understanding the application is key
to a solid design
Interconnect parameters, mechanical
considerations, product environments,
signal speeds, and shielding are key to
design and cost considerations. Early
involvement and documenting of multiple
options, along with their advantages and
weaknesses, is critical to prevent wasted
time and costly choices that may not be
the best practice or best fit for the fabrication or the end application.
Costing
Costing can begin at the concept stage
and can also be a measure of progress
along the production path. The more
information, and the better the quality
of the information, the more reliable are
the cost estimates, which results in fewer
surprises and critical supplier assumptions.
Documentation requirements
Complete documentation packages are
required to ensure manufacturability, testing parameters, assembly instructions,
and technical requirements. This requires
a tight communication link between PFC
and its customers. Document packages
should include:
Assembly drawings
Mechanical drawings
Gerber files
Drill files
Specifications and quality requirements
Bill of materials
Tooling
The quantity, delivery, and estimated
annual usage all impact the fabrication methodology and tooling approach.
Pricing targets prevent a fine Cadillac
from being designed for a short-run
market that really wants a Smart Car. If
within this package one or more items are
missing, the opportunity for error arises;
a clean package will again result in fewer
surprises.

New and specialty products may require

a custom flex circuitry design. However,
the commercial aspects of having a flex
designed, built, and assembled and
using two to three different subcontractors leads to many hidden costs.
Handling issues, logistic management,
component mark-ups, lead-time considerations, shipping costs, and potential for
miscommunication must all be factored
into the process.
Technically, material considerations,
temperature variances, assembly techniques, component tolerances, test
parameters and overall ownership of the
design and product can create havoc for
any company looking for an electronic
interconnect device.
As flexible printed circuitry becomes
essential to new product design in a multitude of areas, a truly flexible product
one that is versatile enough to meet
many different needs, yet repeatable
enough to be cost-effective and accessible is the key to meeting the timelines
of the marketplace. Yet it is essential that
flex circuits be evaluated closely during
the earliest stages of the planning process to truly demonstrate their potential
to facilitate leading design.

tolerance, and high flex needs. It
must also be able to withstand millions of cycles.
Cables may need a special hood/
backshell to withstand the harsh
environment. In the world of D-subs,
there are liquid-sealed hoods available, which are also optimal for field
installation. Overmolded hoods are often
a good choice, if implemented properly.
In the M12 and M8 families, overmolded cable ends are extremely common. Overmolding can improve durability,
streamline size, and enhance the appearance of a cable connection. The increased
durability is a result of the extra strain
relief for wire terminations resulting from
the overmold material bonding to the
cable jacket. The overall assembly gives
a high-reliability connector on each end
with customer-specified cable properties
in between.
Overmolded connectors are available
in right angle or straight, and shielded or
unshielded options. They can also come
with LEDs embedded in the overmold
material for easy monitoring of signal
integrity, or to indicate presence of power.
These connectors are all IP rated as well.
RJ45, USB 2.0, and fiber optic LC
connections, with their limited range of
sizes and circular connector formats, are
well suited to the use of field installed
plug & boot kits. Factory-made cable sets
are also available. Of course, shop preassembly is more typical in the case of LC
connectors. The end result is an IP-rated
connector system.
In summary, with proper design and
careful component selection, the common
connector formats for I/O connections
can often be used in applications that
require ruggedized components. With
careful evaluation of the specifications,
design engineers may be able to avoid
expensive connector formats and utilize
the cost savings of the various families
of ruggedized commercial I/O connectors.

Wireless Designs

Observations on energy harvesting, storage

and wireless sensor networks + RTLS
By Dr Harry Zervos, technology analyst, IDTechEx, Cambridge MA

This article provides an overview of the keynote presentations from the

Energy Harvesting & Storage and Wireless Sensor Networks & RTLS USA
2011 conference held recently in Boston. Leading innovators and adopters of energy harvesting and wireless sensor technologies discussed solutions, challenges and needs that will promote further adoption of energy
harvesting in different verticals.

Ford - Volvo
After Raghu Das opened the conference with an overview of the state of the
energy harvesting market in 2011 and its
forecasted growth, Clay Maranville from
the Ford Motor Company provided attendees with a range of considerations that
guided Ford through the development
of thermoelectric generators for their
vehicles, looking at waste heat recovery
as part of the companys strategy on sustainable transportation.
Energy efficient transportation is
becoming more and more imperative,
both due to the increasing number of
vehicles (car ownership in China is

expected to reach 230M by 2030,

as well as the increasing price of fossil
fuels, making the development of ways to
decrease wasted energy a necessity, both
from an economic as well as an environmental standpoint.
Reducing total fuel consumption,
weight and cost compared to an alternator/battery system would be the ideal
way to implement thermoelectric energy
generation. Replacing the alternator completely is a very challenging approach so,
at this point, supplementing it is a much
more viable option. Recovering waste
heat without interfering with the rest of
the systems on the vehicle was a central
development consideration and results on
a vehicle demonstrated the recovery of
around 275W at cruising speed.
Clay also briefly touched on wireless vehicle sensors, with considerations

including the potential elimination of

1500 different types of wires, (over 4km
in length, 40kg in weight) with reduced
cost, weight and improved long term
durability wireless solutions.
Michael Balthasar from the Volvo Group
continued in a similar vein, focusing
more on commercial vehicles rather than
passenger cars, where fuel efficiency is
also a top priority. The thermodynamic
Rankine cycle approach is currently preferred due to higher efficiencies but thermoelectric generation is also important,
where considerations at Volvo include
lower cost, higher efficiency, and use of
non-toxic materials. Such developments
would make thermoelectric generation a
preferred option.
Cost considerations are also important
in the wireless sensors space, making
sure that product, manufacturing as well
as development & maintenance costs are
reduced. Signal interference and cross
communication have to be avoided at all
costs and equally important, security of
wireless communications is a high priority, making sure it is implemented with
minimal energy consumption.

lighting, privacy, temperature, etc).

In principle this application sounds
very interesting, but consumers become
less enthusiastic when being faced with
the potential of many more wires/cables
and increased electricity bills. Hence,
energy harvesting and wireless solutions
are the main type of approach that would
make sense in this space. Electrophoretic
displays are one approach, being able to
easily control transmission rates from 0
to 70% with five levels of grayscale in
between with low power consumption
(zero power consumed to maintain dark
state, nanoWatts to maintain transparent
state, milliWatts during changing states).
The size of implementation ranges from
portable electronics personalization all the
way to potentially changing the colour of
ones entire home depending on weather
conditions and whether one would desire
to keep a building warmer or cooler.
Dr Lenssen also announced for the
first time HPs development of a different
technology, based on electrokinetics. The
electrokinetic panels are manufactured on
a roll to roll process and can also operate
with very little power provided, whether
by indoor PV or RF power.

Toys & electronic content

Georgia Tech

On a totally different sector, Warren

Kronberger from The Marketing Store
discussed the interest in the energy
harvesting space from the perspective
of a marketing company. Promotional
toys incorporating electronics and interior design furniture are some of the types
of products available from The Marketng
Store that would benefit from energy
harvesting technologies. Some of the
modified toys incorporate proximity and
sound sensors, currently utilizing batteries. However, energy harvesting could
potentially lead to an enhanced role playing experience. Some interactive electronic toys (first introduced in 2003) are
at times deployed in very large volumes of
more than 30-million units in the space
of a month and so. This would certainly
create significant demand for harvesters.
For adults, harvesting ambient energy
would make sense in retail applications,
in order to power products incorporating
interactive elements in their packaging,
POP and window displays and signage or
even incorporated into components of the
final product. Kronberger also commented
that safety concerns are quite relevant
in this space, due to the close proximity
and increased interaction of the consumer
with these types of products (e.g. avoiding lead and other toxic materials, the
disposal of electronic waste).

Dr Kars Michiel Lenssen from Philips

Research Laboratories discussed electronic skin development, in collaboration
with HP, and its power requirements
in autonomous devices. Electronic skin
describes the change of the appearance of
surfaces electronically and remotely, with
large size examples including smart windows and electronic wall paper (managing

the main foci of research at the Georgia
Institute of Technology includes long
range wireless power transfer (5-6 miles),
as well as multiple mode energy harvesting and electronic skin applications.
The research groups work on wireless
sensor nodes follows a three in one
approach, developing sensors, communication as well as power, integrating high
efficiency nanotechnologies as well as
low cost substrates. Paper electronics is
one of the low cost substrate approaches, with examples such as RFID inkjet
printed on paper. The substrate can be
made hydrophobic (can be washed, rained
upon) with 20 micron inkjet accuracy.
Inkjet-printed carbon nanotubes have
been studied and used as gas sensors
due to their high sensitivity to nitrogen,
allowing to detect ammonia, nitrogen
compounds etc), with applications including efforts to develop ways to stopping
leakages before they become catastrophic.
The prolific group has also demonstrated solar smart skin for structural
health monitoring, powering strain gauges
and has shown how broadband RF harvesting can produce useful amounts of
power, whereas narrowband gives very
little power.

One Laptop Per Child (OLPC)

Richard Smith discussed the main
needs of the highly ambitious project,
and its charitable efforts to provide children all over the world with the necessary
tools to promote education and opportunities even where availability of resources
is scarce. Low power requirements, fault
tolerance and robustness, as well as
mostly inexpensive devices (although

point), with sunlight readable display are
some of the main points Richard made
during his presentation.
OLPC has produced 2.2-million laptops
since 2006, mostly deployed in Latin
America. The third generation of laptops
goes into production in 2012 and theres
a tablet device under design as well.
Off grid power remains a challenge as
there is no one size fits all solution at
different sites, different environments, cultures, social requirements (e.g. Mongolia vs
Kenya). Options discussed included:
Hand crank: one option that becomes
feasible with the third generation of
devices.
Madagascars waterwheel: In this set
up, a 3KW turbine, is used. A water pool
that fills up during the day powers the
turbine during the night by hosing out
the water from the pool onto it. The set
up provides power for the village and part
of it goes to powering OLPC laptops.
For the developing world, the size
of a laptop battery is meaningless - as
Smith said during his presentation How
big does your battery have to be if there
is no place to plug it in. Opportunistic
charging is the way forward: high charge
rate, low power draw and being humanly
feasible (relying on power you generate
yourself) are the three main requirements
for it. According to OLPC, the ideal ration
of charging time over runtime achieved is
1 to 10: 10 minutes charging for 100 minutes of runtime. Thats the kind of device
the charity is working towards.

Gem Hsin Electronics Co. Ltd., Taiwanbased manufacturer of LED lamps, has
made some advances in its research and
development of LED lighting products
that enable wider beam angles and
enhanced uniformity of light.
These combined patented designs
are being incorporated into the firms
line of T5 / T8 LED Tube Lights.
Gem Hsins engineers, reduced the size
of the heat-sinks needed in their LED
products. Using laser-precision technology, extremely small holes are drilled
beneath each LED, creating direct paths
for heated air to escape to the heatsink. This improvement, while seemingly
minute, means that LEDs will stay cooler, improving efficiency and lifespan,
and at the same time require less heatsink mass for thermal optimization.
In addition, the design advancement
enables the lighting products to provide
much wider beam angles, up to 220
degrees.
Gem Hsins R&D team has also developed a new way to position LEDs into tube
lights. Gem Hsin is now implementing a
design that increases uniformity and
quality of light by using two, staggered
rows of LEDs. Instead of uneven light
with unsightly bright and dark areas,
the units produce consistent natural,
soft light along their entire length.

737-300s, 400s and 500s. The plane in
question had been in service for 15-years.
While this does not mean that the
majority of existing aircraft are unsafe, it
does illustrate a simple fact: age is catching up with the fleet. Addressing aging
aircraft and aircraft systems seems simple
enough: replace the aircraft and/or its
operating systems. However, given how
the current global economic challenges
are affecting passengers and airlines,
now is not the ideal time to make these
significant capital expenditures.
In addition, the skyrocketing cost of
jet fuel has made cost-cutting an imperative for fleet owners. Jet kerosene prices
rose to $129 a barrel in September of
2011, nearing the record highs of 2008.
As a result, to keep their fleets safe,
owners are focusing their efforts on maintaining existing aircraft and key systems.
In order to meet margins, however, fleet
owners are looking for additional ways to
reduce overall operating costs.
Maintenance is typically 10-20% of all
airplane-related operating costs. To put
that into perspective, for large commercial
carriers, this can equal as much as one
billion dollars a year. Fortifying key aircraft systems with components made from
durable, long-lasting, high-performance
materials is a good way to safely reduce
replacement and maintenance, maintaining the bottom line. Long-lasting parts
that provide optimal performance can be
worth their weight in gold.

Maintaining excellence
with polyimides
The challenge for fleet owners is to
find an ideal material for key parts that
can withstand the harsh aerospace environment, including extreme heat, corrosive chemicals and intense vibrations.
Polyimide parts provide long-lasting performance ideal for fleet owners looking
to reduce maintenance costs. For example,
polyimides are inherently lightweight
weighing less than conventional component materials such as aluminum and steel.
As fuel costs continue to rise, lightweight components in aircraft systems
are increasingly important. The obvious
benefit of parts made using lightweight
polyimides is the reduced weight of
various aircraft systems, as well as the
overall weight of the aircraft, decreasing
the amount of fuel consumed. However,

in challenging aerospace applications.
