The number of passengers served by JKIA in December 2015 grew by 6.8% from the
figure registered same month in 2014 to reach 592,169. Over the same period, aircraft
movements improved by 6.1% to 8,758. The amount of cargo handled improved
marginally to 21,182.1 tons over the period under review.
Looking at sector performances, the European destinations continued to register declines
in traffic, particularly Amsterdam, London, Zurich and Brussels. This was however,
ameliorated by some appreciable growth on other routes such as Istanbul and Frankfurt.
The domestic sector saw a decline on the JKIA-Mombasa route, but good performance
particularly on the JKIA-Ukunda and JKIA-Malindi sectors, driven by the operations of
Jambo Jet. The JKIA-Kisumu was almost at the same level as last year.
In terms of aircraft movements, the international counter registered about the same
traffic level as last year in the period under review. The domestic sector improved
substantially mainly as a result of increased scheduled flights on the Ukunda, Malindi,
Kisumu and Eldoret sectors, riding on the activities of the budget carriers such as Jambo
Jet and Fly540 COM.
Cargo traffic during the month under review improved marginally mainly as a result of
some improvements in exports to Europe.
JKIA registered 1.5%, and 1.1% growth in passenger and aircraft movements
respectively but a drop of about 0.2% in cargo movements in the first half year ending
December 2015 when compared to the traffic handled same period last year.
