said Mary Pfeiffer, Neenah district administrator. "It's all about ways that recognize
some students learn faster than others

Pfeiffer said the bill would address
technology use, which is currently not
considered when it used at home or school.
She later cited the example of a district
having to cancel school two days due to
weather when it only has one weather day
in the calendar. Under current state law,

"From our perspective, that really doesn't make sense, because are students really
going to be engaged on June 8 as opposed
to June 7? That's part of the minutia we're
dealing with," Pfeiffer said.

Several local school district administrators were joined by Rep. Jesse Kremer (RKewaskum) in West Bend Feb. 1 regarding
future proposed legislation that would give
flexibility to current school day requirements.
During a media availability at the
Badger Middle School library, West Bend
Joint School District Superintendent Ted
Neitzke said he and other school administrators in the CESA (Cooperative
Educational Services Agency) 6 region have
discussed greater flexibility and local control for scheduling. He explained that in
Wisconsin, public schools cannot begin
until Sept. 1 and have a set amount of days
and minutes students have to be in school.
"We have complexity in scheduling and
we don't have local flexibility to meet the
needs or our parents, their children or our
staff in schools," Neitzke said.
Neitzke said Kremer has drafted a bill
that would seek to reduce local constraints
in scheduling. He later added "it's not
about reducing minutes of instruction so
we can cut spending, it's not about reducing minutes of instruction so we can offer
less programs, it's about greater flexibility."

Prep sports: KML beats Vincent

The Kettle Moraine Lutheran girls
basketball team beat Milwaukee Vincent
Feb. 2, 42-36. Alyssa Shipley led Kettle
Moraine Lutheran with 17 points while
Payton Schneider added 11 points. It
was the 15th consecutive win in a row
for the Chargers and improved their
overall record to 15-3.
The Chargers stayed on top of the
East Central Conference standings with
a 52-29 win at Campbellsport Jan. 28.
Schneider led the Chargers with 11
points while Shipley added nine points.
The win improved Kettle Moraine
Lutheran's Conference record to 10-0.
The Chargers started last week
ranked sixth in the state Division 3

coaches poll, up from seventh a week

earlier.
Living Word Lutheran was second in
the Midwest Classic Conference standings with a 7-2 conference record and a
13-3 overall mark following a 61-49 win
over Lake Country Lutheran Feb. 2.
Slinger lost at Beaver Dam Jan. 29,
59-45. Emily Rothehhoefer led Slinger
with 14 points. Afterward, the Owls
were third in the Little Ten Conference
with a 7-3 record and a 13-5 overall
mark.
West Bend East lost to Watertown
Jan. 29, 53-46. Katelyn Zettler led East
with 17 points. Afterward, East was tied
for fifth with a 4-6 conference record

and a 6-12 overall mark.

Hartford lost at Wisconsin Lutheran
Jan. 29, 43-32. Becca Kaphingst and
Morgan Lentz scored nine points each
for Hartford, which now has a 1-9
record and a 2-15 overall mark.

the flexibility to morph with the technology and societal demands placed on
our educational institutions today. At
the same time, we must encourage our
low performing schools to provide
results."
Kremer said there is a bill in a
"working draft" for the proposed legislation. He said it wouldn't likely be
done this legislative session but would
ready for next year. He said ideas being
considered would be having the flexibility scheduling done as a pilot program in selected school districts.
Currently in the Legislature, there
is a bill under which school district
who have a certain percentage of students taking Advanced Placement (AP)
courses for college credit could begin
prior to Sept. 1 (the tests for Advanced
Placement courses are in May). Kremer
said that bill is in the Education
Committee and a public hearing has
been held. He added that an attempt
was made to remove the Sept. 1 start
day requirement as part of the budget
bill, but there are organizations that
support the Sept. 1 start day.
"If we're not going to allow this as
a start (starting school prior to Sept.
1), then at least look at what superintendent are presenting, where we allow
more flexbility to the hours per day.
Pfeiffer added that public schools
are competing with charter schools
and private schools that have greater
flexibility in scheduling.
"Let us have the same rules that
can apply and let the local school
board make that determination,"
Pfeiffer said.
Neitzke said he likes the bill about
the earlier start time for districts with
a high percentage of students taking
AP courses, but added it gives an
advantage to suburban school districts.
He said the legislation should apply to
the ACT, which all public school students are now required to take.

Leroy Butler to appear at Express News Home, Garden & Landscape Show
Leroy Butler, beloved and iconic cornerback and safety who played his
entire career (1990-2001) with the
Green Bay Packers, will be signing autographs at the Express News Home,
Garden and Landscape Show on
Saturday, Feb. 27 from 10:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m.
Butler was selected by the Packers in
the second round of the 1990 draft.
During his impressive career, he played
in 181 regular season games and 14
postseason games. He earned a Super

Bowl ring after the Packers defeated the

New England Patriots in Super Bowl
XXXI at the end of the 1996 season. He
was also selected All-Pro four times and
for the Pro Bowl four times (1993, 1996,
1997, and 1998). Butler was named to
the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team by the
Pro Football Hall of Fame and later
inducted into the Green Bay Packers
Hall of Fame in 2007.
During his 12 seasons with the
Packers, Butler recorded 953 tackles, 38
interceptions, 553 return yards, 12 fum-

ble recoveries, three defensive touchdowns and 20 1/2 sacks. He led or tied
for the team lead in interceptions in
five different seasons. He was the first
defensive back in NFL history to gain
entrance
in
the
