(Editors)
Lagos: Concept Publications Limited, 2009

ISBN-13: 9789788406167
$ 45.00
The pervasive misconception of Africans as a people without a historical, cultural and
educational past made it expedient for concerned African scholars to come together to
disprove that notion. Their argument is that, although unwritten, oral traditions carried on
since pre-literate times represent repertoires of authentic beliefs and practices of African
people.
This book, Oral Traditions in Black and African Culture is the product of a four-day
international collaborative conference on African culture jointly organized by the Centre for
Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) and Adeyemi College of Education (ACE),
Ondo in December 2008
It is a bold attempt at not only understanding several aspects of African oral traditions
but also drawing attention to the urgent need to save our dying cultural legacy.

changing the readers understanding of history. Because it is strikingly original, it sheds
some light on Nigerians recent past.
It is the story of a brilliant and courageous man, weighed down by history, and of a
womans extraordinary stamina to struggle on despite all difficulties. It is presented through
the eyes of the children who went through it all.
It is a family saga and a national treasure.

It is said that the secrets of great men are their stories. These words are proven profoundly
true in Makindes generous expose of his last conversation with the great Chief Obafemi
Awolowo.
While it is one thing to directly witness or hear about the actions of a great man, it is a
higher and more valuable privilege to gain knowledge of the reasons and thought processes
guiding those remarkable acts. That rare privilege is what Moses Makinde has given readers
and generations yet to be born through this book.
In the process of answering Makindes philosophical probing, Awolowo unveils various
aspects of himself as well as the thoughts behind his publicly acclaimed phenomenal acts.

Theophilus Oluwole Akindeles Memoir of Mixed Blessings tells the story of a man whose life
took many interesting twists and turns to bring him to the pinnacle of the
telecommunication industry in Nigeria. After leaving CMS Grammar School, he worked
briefly as a radio monitor and announcer before going to the UK to study engineering. On
his return, he joined the Colonial Civil Service as executive telecommunications engineer in
Nigeria

charge of the Lagos territory. He rose through the ranks to become Director-General of Post
and Telecommunications.
Akindeles account of key events in the political history of Nigeria, being close friends
with Ademulegun, Ironsi and Ogundipe in particular, brings new insights to the turbulent
events of the first republic and the subsequent military regimes (Aguyi-Ironsi, Gowon and
Murtala Mohammeds). His role in telecommunications during the civil war gives us fresh
insight into important events of that period. Most interesting however, was the battle of
wills that occurred, when he was pitted against Murtala Mohammed, over the signing of the
ITT/Radio Corporation of Nigeria contract. This saga eventually cost him his job and could
be said to be one of the factors that precipitated the coup of 1976.
He gave his best, and was later rewarded with a role beyond the shores of a single
nation, after he was prematurely retired from office.
With a deep desire to serve the nation, Akindele has tried to live an honest and
principled life, and struggled to make the civil service an honourable profession. This
autobiography will, as well as painting an interesting history of Nigeria, give us a portrait of
a man of courage, wit and above all, principle.

the 20th century during which a few of his generation created on the continent, side by side

21st Century Nigerian Literature: An Introductory Text studies some one hundred Nigerian
literary works which have emerged in the new millennium. In the fertile imaginations of the
authors of these works reside the developmental hope of the Nigerian national literature on
the one hand, and the achievement of the humanizing ideal of the scribal arts on the 21st
century novel, poetry, drama, short story and childrens literature with a modestly
comprehensive attitude, on the other. It also aims at providing a 21st century view of what
has happened in and to Nigerian literature from the earliest beginnings.

Honourable Samuel Bakuras attempt to correct what he thought was wrong with the
intricate and demanding job of lawmaking at the Federal House of Representatives threw
him headlong into a series of confounding conflicts.
TENANTS OF THE HOUSE is a skilful fictional delineation of the ugly colours of Nigerian
politics with its seeming intrigues, base motives,win-at-all-cost motivations, and money as
the great leverage. With its rich mix of love and politics, TENANTS OF THE HOUSE
presents, with gripping suspense, a shrill voice of a nation in urgent need of political

Eleko to Lagos from Oyo where he served his banishment.

When myths are employed in drama, they are not meant to plunder the past for
entertainment. Rather, they are remembrances of the relics of the past for education.
On this particular occasion, we stand on the solid rock of the spirit of the Yoruba woman
who. For millions of years, have been keenly alive both to her cultural responsibilities, as
wife and mother, and to her gender as an equal partner to man in the business of life.
Belly Bellows is Akinwumi Orojide-Isolas attempt at recreating the popular Yoruba Oya

situations of conflict and cooperation.

Bankes narrow escape from the Heavy Weights Club patrons in Lagos, shattered her
relationship with her boyfriend, Toks. While on campus, Toks notorious and indulgent hard
crimes, which brewed mainly within his Heavy Weights Club, leaked out and ruined the
Clubs reputation.
The Heavy Weights Club was no longer capable of any relevant social activity within the
campus so, the Silver Line Movement Club decided to rescue the whole university
communitys social life.
Through the novel, Orojide-Isola captures the rotten nature of our society using lucid
and vivid language. His use of penetrating metaphors adds to the richness of the work.

Then, the frailties of human moral may become improved based on contrition. Contrition is
the reason why Immaobong, a beautiful lady, cried silently in the dark. Two men were
instrumental to certain decisions in her life. One of them was a soul mate, and the other
person, a doctor. They impacted in her subconscious mind, the desire to reason and act
positively in a society where the HIV victims ate stigmatized, the downtrodden are
oppressed.
But, how far can she go in changing the societal perception of ETHOS IN THE DARK?

Amadu Baduku, a jobless and starving writer was walking near Tinubu Square, Lagos one
late afternoon when the traffic hold-up was at its worst. He soliloquized on the hold-up and
his endless years of trouble, tears and pain on the rough terrain of trying to earn a living by
writing.
Rejection slip after rejection slip from publishers had nearly driven him to the edge of
despair. To compound his problems he also fell out with Anyawu, an intellectual and highly
sophisticated beauty who had offered him shelter and wanted to mould him into a specific
kind of writer.
But then comes the silver lining in the cloud Amadu gets an acceptance letter from a

Sweet Roots is a literary and creative narrative of the cultural evolution of a typical
westernized Nigerian. Seinde Arogbofa, while proudly attesting that he is a product of his
society, takes the reader down memory lane on the vanishing cherished African family
system, the peoples value customs and their unique and alluring pastimes. Albeit, he
advocates for such necessary modernization as can still preserve the Nigerian, nay African,
identity and personality.

Maimuna and Sule left the hotel about two oclock. When they reached the motor-park, they
found a mini-bus with only two vacant seats. As soon as they climbed into the bus, the
driver pulled and drove to Kaduna.
The mini-bus was halfway to Kaduna when, after hurtling around the bend, it came faceto-face with another oncoming lorry. To avoid the bend-on collision, the driver swerved to
the right. Suddenly, out of the dust raised by the oncoming lorry, he perceived a stationary
vehicle. There was no time to save himself or the passengers. He slammed on the brakes
and braced himself against the wheel
He remembered how she had looked after him. How placid and beautiful she had been.
Could such a creature be a whore? No, no, she certainly had not been a human being. She
was a jinn sent to earth. Maybe Allah Himself sent her to him. The nurse had told a lie when
she said Maimuna was buried by the roadside. It was not Maimunas body; she had
disappeared, as a jinn would do.
But was she offered? Dis he betray her? He had promised never to come to Lagos. But

Peacebuilding and conflict management training became a topical issue in Nigeria in the late
1990s following the high level of unrest that was found in the wake of establishment of
civilian rule after the many years of military dictatorship. Over the past few years, training
of different target groups in conflict management and peacebuilding has become a key
working area for many structures and institutions traditionally involved in human rights and
development.
