Position Paper

What does being civilized mean? In fact is the world even civilized? With everything
going on in the world, I say it cannot be civilized. There are still many wars, riots, and conflicts
on this day and age. Cleary the world isnt civilized.
The definition of civilized according to Dictronary.com is having an advanced or
humane culture, society, etc. While according to Google.com it means, bring (a place or
people) to a stage of social, cultural, and moral development considered to be more advanced or
polite and well-mannered. With these definitions, the world should be a place where everyone
is well-mannered and has the ethics that have advanced. If that is the case, the world cant be
considered civilized. Take religion for instances, the Google definition states moral
development considered to be more advanced, but Islam, Hindu, and other religions are
followed by people who practice the same beliefs and ideas as of people in the past 3,000 years.
How could the world be considered civilized if some people still condemn the actions of people
with practices such as beheadings, stoning, and etc.
Even the most successful country cant be considered civilized. On April 30, 2015, the
Baltimore Riots took place in the USA with countless injuries, looting, and violence. According
to the Googles definition of civilized, it means being polite and well-mannered. Surely the
people in riots werent being well mannered. According to CNN.com rocks being thrown at
police and buildings and cars set on fire, actions that are considered uncivilized. These events
dont take place only in the worlds most successful country as well. Many violent and
uncivilized events take place everywhere, such as in Ukraine, and Hong Kong. All of these
events result in violence, violence that many people consider as uncivilized. If the worlds most
successful countries in the world cant be considered civilized how can the world be as well?

There is a massive amount of inequality in this world. There is a difference between the 2
genders. In an article by Jared Diamond, Farming may have encouraged inequality between the
sexes... often see women staggering under loads of vegetables and firewood while the men walk
empty-handed. This goes against Dictionary.coms definition having an advanced or humane
culture, society. Clearly the inequality between to 2 sexes causes inhumane treatment that is
also seen throughout the world.
There is a huge wealth gap between the poor and rich. The difference between the rich
and poor causes uncivilized actions in the world. Take for instance the Olsen twins, rich twins
who had lesser people work for them. Their workers say they have endured 50-hour
workweeks without pay at Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen according to Theguardian.com. Yet,
they still havent received their pay. Thinkprogress.org tells us, The richest 1 percent of
Americans now own 40 percent of the nations wealth 80 percent own only 7 percent. This
large discrepancy has caused violence throughout the globe, such as the Occupied Wall Street,
where protestors got arrested and attacked by people.
In conclusion, the world is not civilized. There is so much violence and impoliteness in
this day and age that the world cant be close to being considered civilized. The world faces
threats every day, especially from people in power. The ideas that are considered uncivilized are
still practice. Inequality rages among the population of both rich and poor countries. Powerful
countries are not capable of maintaining a constant civilized population. Clearly the world is
uncivilized, and thus the world isnt civilized.
