HYDROSTATIC TEST

1. SCOPE
The scope of the procedure is to establish the rules for the performance of the tests
under pressure.

2. FIELD OF APPLICATION
This instruction applies whenever a pressure tests on equipment and products shall
be performed.

3. DOCUMENTS OF REFERENCE
The instruction finds some references in the following documents:

Ergomeccanica S.r.l. Quality Manual;

Contractual specifications;

97/23/CE PED Directive and related reference codes.

4. RESPONSIBILITY
The functions that are responsible for this procedure are:

The Quality function;

The Manager of workshop and the Manager of site;

The ispector of the client;

The inspector of Notified Bodies (if required by contractual standards or

Directives).

5. OPERATING MODES
5.1.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The hydrostatic test has the scope to assess the compliance of the vessell with the
requirements and standards indicated in the project specifications and the laws in
force in the place where the vessell has to be installed.
5.2.

PRESSURIZING

Before the test is necessary that:

The Responsible of the Workshop or Site shall indicate and delimit, with
stakes and warning tape, the operational area considered dangerous;

HYDROSTATIC TEST

This expedient highlights for all the operational workers that the equipment is
going to be pressurized for testing;
the Quality Control Manager shall verify the completion of the applicable
previous stages of control (visual / dimensional check, CND, welding record,
material traceability, etc.) and shall define, on the basis of the available
diagrams of process, the parts to be tested highlighting them in the
corresponding drawings. In these activities he shall operate in collaboration
with the head of the workshop or the site and any external involved
inspectors.

Before pressurizing the line or vessel which has to be tested, the manager in charge
must ensure the proper venting of the air still contained inside the line / vessell
through the vent valves assembled in it. The value of the test pressure to be reached
and the choice of the equipment to be used shall be reported in the technical
specifications / codes / guidelines applicable to the job.

The test pressure in every point of the vessell must be the greater of these values:
1.

Pt = 1,43P

2.

Pt = 1,25PSt/S

ove:
Pt is the test pressure
P is the design pressure
St is the allowable stress at the test temperature
S is the allowable stress at the design temperature

The water used for the hydrostatic test shall be sweet, fresh, clean and free from
solid suspension or other material, in such a way that it shall not be harmful regarding
the effects of corrosion. In some cases, after the request of the clients, it is possible
to add in the water a corrosion inhibitor agent in the prescribed amount from the
sheet of the available product, and once the hydrostatic test is finished, this technical
sheet shall be attached to the final certificate of the test.

This document is property of Eni S.p.A. Exploration & Production Division. It shall neither be shown to Third Parties nor used for purposes other than those for which it has been sent.

HYDROSTATIC TEST

As far as the hydrostatic tests concerning material consisting of stainless steel or

nickel alloys, water with a chloride content which does not go beyond 50 parts per
million shall be used as carrier or if this is not possible, at the end of the test a
thorough rinsing shall be performed with water of such characteristics.
A far as the test temperature, it is recommended that the wall temperature of the
vessell shall be not less than 16 C so that the risk of brittle fracture does not to incur;
Besides it is recommendable that the test pressure shall not be applied until the
piping or tank and the water are at the same temperature.
The temperature of water may be the one available at that moment unless otherwise
indicated if there is the chance of freezing during outdoors tests. Therefore, in these
situations, it is important to use antifreeze additives or specific fluid, and in case of
test condition at low temperatures the risk of brittle fracture shall be considered too.
The test pressure must be gradually increased by stages maintaining at each stage
the pressure for a sufficient time to stabilize the deformation until reaching the final
value (this value must be maintained for about one hour), or for the period foreseen
by the codes or applicable Directives.
The pressure gauges used in the test must have a scale of about twice and in no
case less than one and a half or more than four times the test pressure. In addition
the spacing between the divisions must be such to allow an appreciable reading of
the correct pressure.
The pressure gauges are calibrated with the aid of secondary samples or with
balance of weights in accordance with the applicable procedure.

5.3.

TESTING, INSPECTIONS, DISCHARGE, REPAIRS, REVISIONS AND

REGISTRATIONS

After the holding time of the test pressure, the quality control function and the
representative of the Client / External bodies (if provided their presence), proceed to
check:

the value of the test pressure (which must be maintained constant for the
whole time of the scheduled duration);

welds and joints in order to visually ascertain any leak after the test, using
soapy solutions to bring out better the losses.

HYDROSTATIC TEST

In the moment the losses are ascertained on the test component, the same is
depressurized and drained to perform the necessary repairs and after that the
hydraulic test is executed again; besides there is no need to repeat the visual
inspection for the parts previously accepted. Finally, if the test gives a positive result,
the component will be completely emptied paying particular attention not to create
depressions in the various opening vents.
If some pressure parts or component in direct contact with the wall are subject to
change after the pressure test, the same shall be repeated again.
In the case of tests carried out in periods of rain the acceptance of it shall be on the
final decision of the Client.
It shall be noted, however, that the acceptance is conditioned on having found that
the vessell during test has remained under pressure to the final value without the
need for further pumping compression for a sufficient period of time. The values
recorded during the expected period of the test shall be recorded on specific forms
and, when required, recording equipment of direct values can be used throughout the
period of the test. These documents must be signed at the end of the test from the
involved departments.

5.4.

RECOVERY AFTER TESTING

After the test and the approval by the Client and / or the involved notified bodies the
head of the workshop or site have the duty to perform a complete drainage of the
tested vessell. The used fluid shall be disposed in accordance with the requirements
of the Client and with the prescription of the documentation in the Environmental
Management System of the company Ergomeccanica S.r.l.
The following activities shall be executed after the test:

purging of tank by blowing;

elimination of blind discs except those placed on regulators and gauges,

control valves, safety valves;

positioning of gaskets in the places where provisional gaskets were used;

final tightening of the bolts.

The proper application of these activities is subject to inspection by the Quality

Control function.
