OBITUARY- Ian Robert Body

Norscot Joinery Production Director.
1962 - 2015

orn in Chiswick, West London in September

1962, Ian and his family moved to Caithness
in 1978.
Ian served his time as a joiner with D M Geddes &
Sons, where he rose to become a foreman. Whilst
with the firm, he worked on a major housing
development in Wick and a variety of projects at
Dounreay. This experience equipped him with a
good grounding in construction work in the north.
In 1984, Ian was instrumental in establishing
the family business with his parents and brother
which came to be known as Norscot Joinery.
Norscot started life in a large shed in Ians garden,
manufacturing the unique Fairmitre timber
window system. Ians father Peter sold them, Ian
and brother John-Paul made them and mother
Teda made sure they got paid for them. In due
course Norscot moved to its current base in Bower
and took on the manufacture of uPVC windows
and timber frame house kits. Ian relished the new
challenges they presented.
As Norscots Production Director, a post he held for
31 years, Ian loved being on the 'front line' of the
production side of the business and was dedicated
to and took great pride in his work. He always
displayed the highest degree of professionalism
and integrity and was well respected within the
business community in Caithness and further
afield. He was an enthusiastic sports fan and a
loyal supporter of Caithness RFC.

the years. He will be sorely missed by us all and on

behalf of the whole team at The VEKA UK Group
we send our sincerest condolences to his family
and friends.
A memorial service will take place on Ians birthday
on Friday, the 25th of September. The service is to
be held at Ormlie Lodge in Thurso, starting at 12
noon and anyone who knew Ian is invited to attend.
The family wish this to be a celebration of Ians
life and the dress code will be strictly smart casual
and wearing something red, Ians favourite colour,
would be appreciated. The family do not wish to
receive cards or flowers but invite donations to the
British Liver Trust.

Colin Torley, Sales & Marketing Director at The

he news regarding the atrocious attacks in

Tunisia earlier this Summer, will undoubtedly
have left most people shocked, reeling and
appalled, with many looking at lifes perspectives and
evaluating their safety, not just at work but in every day
life. It was a stark, sobering time when you reflect. By
comparison, the legacy left by 106 year old Sir Nicholas
Winton, cannot and should not be ignored and brought
fortitude and character to mind when looking at
struggles against adversity.
Winton was a towering figure of strength amid total
mayhem, cutting through bureaucracy like a maverick
and perhaps gives us pause for thought about what we
allow leaders to do in our name. Adapting our lives to
a certain degree by introducing new safety measures,
large or small, will undoubtedly become a priority for
many, whether we like it or not.

and the ramifications of such a move, reinforces the

fragility of the foundations across the EU.
Greeces financial crisis was not actually exceptional,
particularly when you look back at the Eurocrisis in
2009/2010 where Italy and Spain too, were teetering.
Whichever political persuasion is considered, rough
times lie ahead for Greece and the EU and its future path
will no doubt have a wider impact on EU developments
and business. The current austere economy reinforces
how much needs to be re-examined by EU member
states, with solutions needed to be put in place that
look at the threat of deflation and finding ways forward
for growth.

For this industry, underpinning safety is a precedent

that now more than ever, is coming into the spotlight.

Some positive European news has come through

however, from Guardian Europe, which is moving to a
new HQ in Luxembourg. The company has made the
move with a view to bolstering growth and committing
to a European business platform that will harness
innovation and positive results.

The GGFs attendance at the Counter Terror exhibition

in June reflects on how our world is changing and what
we are being forced to consider. The Chairmans seminar
on technological advances in glass manufacturing to be
more resistant to attacks from ballistics and explosives
was very well received. Certainly, it will be interesting to
learn more about the RFI (Radio Frequency Interference),
being produced in glass as an anti-terrorism measure
regarding electronic communications.

Innovation and commitment to excellence has

been well rewarded recently with a number of key
manufacturers gaining recognition through business
award nominations and accolades. One of the most
notable success stories comes from Edgetech UK,
which has won two awards in the space of just five
weeks. The latest reflects the companys dedication
to innovation and manufacturing excellence which is
highlighted in this edition.

With safety in mind, this month also, Window Ware

reminds us of the importance placed on this, with
legislative changes due to be introduced in October
this year via Document Q.

Keeping on with the theme of safety and positive

events, we thought we would close on the lighter
side of things. When we first read about the man in
Canada who was arrested for making mischief, after he
attempted to fly through the air on a chair held up only
by 100 helium-filled balloons, we thought it was a novel
way to market his cleaning solution business. Indeed,
had it not been for the health and safety implications,
it could have been a potential new challenge for this
industry, but then realised, it would just be seen as a
lot of hot air.

As focus is placed on getting building projects legally

in-line with new industry standards, the company
reminds us about the significance of getting it right
with failure to comply, leading to potential legal action,
fines and closure.
The Grexit and the Greek peoples resounding no vote
has caused shockwaves across every industry sector for
the last few months. The will they wont they debate

New Dielectric Mirror a

ertrange, Luxembourg, August 25, 2015

Guardian Dielectric Mirror is now
available in the UK and Ireland, offering
a new dimension to modern design.
Developed and produced by Guardian Industries
Glass Group a leading manufacturer of highquality commercial, residential, interior and
automotive glass products this product serves
a dual purpose: It can function as a traditional
mirror, while effectively masking a television
or display screen that can be mounted behind
it. However, when that electronic device is
switched on, the coating redirects the light,
and its screen becomes clearly visible through
the glass.

20 |August 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Dielectric Mirror is ideal for any application

in homes or businesses where state-of-theart hidden televisions, commercial displays or
projection screens are needed. The product is
available in two versions:
DM 60/40 reflects more than 57% of light
and allows 41% light transmission, making it
ideal for applications when it is mostly used
as a mirror;
DM 30/70, on the other hand, reflects
roughly 29% of light and allows 69% of light
transmission when the display behind it is
switched on, making it the optimal solution for
when the TV or display function is a key aspect
of the design.

coating technology, Dielectric Mirror reduces
the distractions caused by high absorption in
typical high-reflective glass products, and also
succeeds in removing the excessive dark aspect
so familiar in many of these glass applications,
thereby providing a distinct commercial
advantage.

It also can be tempered and processed into

laminated safety glass.

Guardian first introduced Dielectric Mirror at

the Glasstec show in Dsseldorf, Germany, last
year, and is now officially rolling it out in the

GGF RELEASES NEW GLASS

REPAIR TECHNICAL DOCUMENT

The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) is pleased to

announce the release of a new technical Data Sheet entitled,
Glass Repair Removal of Surface Damage from Glass.
The publication covers the optical and quality factors that
influences the appearance of glass following surface repair.
The major emphasis of this new technical document is on
the visual performance when glass is viewed from inside a
building.
Bob Griffin of Re-newglass and Chairman of the GGF Glass
Repair Group commented; This will prove not only a highly
useful data sheet but also a very important one for the sector.
For some time there has been concern in the industry over
glass polishing and in particular on toughened glass. This
document answers those concerns.
The Data Sheet addresses causes and types of glass surface
and edge damage as well as optical and visual quality
across many types of glass including annealed, toughened,
laminated and coated glass. The publication then explains
the repair process and method of assessment.
Bob added, I am very pleased this publication has been
released. It will provide vital information for customers and
glass producers who are looking for guidance on treatment
options for surface damage. It is the authoritative technical
publication that should become a required industry reference

for all looking to repair glass.

Brian Baker of Glassolutions and GGF President is a Member

of the Glass Repair Group and helped produce this latest
document. Brian added, It is yet another excellent addition
to the GGF library of technical information and I have no
doubt will be essential in guiding the industry when it comes
to repairing glass surfaces.
The Glass Repair Removal of Surface Damage (Ref 5.15.1)
from Glass Data Sheet is available for free download for all
GGF Members from the Members Area of the GGF website.
Non-Members of the GGF can buy this new product direct

The GGF Glass Repair Group is currently reviewing its online
presence and is planning to create three new sections on
the GGF Website in the autumn including; Industry Case

For frameXpress it has been noticeable how

Equally it has become evident that homeowners

installing striking conservatories with coloured

This was reflected in a recent installation where

Supalite expands network through

partnership with Pearl Windows

upalite Tiled Roof Systems is delighted to

announce it has formed a partnership with Pearl
Windows for the super fabricator to supply the
roof to its trade dealer network.
Managing Director David Watters made the
announcement after concluding discussions with Pearl
Windows in June. It is a great arrangement for us
both. For us to be in partnership with a company of
the standing of Pearl Windows is great news. It shows
where we have come to in the market and how well
recognised our products are now.
I stress products rather than product as we now
have four very distinct ranges on offer for the market
including our new Orangery which has been incredibly
well received, as well as our new Sky Vista, and our Eco
Roof. These of course are on top of our core solid roof
offering, the sales of which continue to grow by the
week.
Forming a partnership with the team at Pearl is great
news for both companies. As well as the obvious

36 |August 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

benefit of increased sales opportunities, it has also

enabled us to introduce a complete building solution
for customers of ours who want it especially on our
retail side, as we will be taking windows and doors
from Pearl.
It is ideal that both parties will benefit from being able
to offer one anothers products, and this will also give
the partnership longevity. It is an exciting development
for us as we continue to grow.
The market for solid tiled roofs is still very much in its
infancy and we know that by forming alliances such as
the one with Pearl Windows, on top of the arrangements
we already have in place with our outstanding Supalite
Club customers that the Supalite roof will become a
genuine market leading product in the sector.

ULTION'S NEW WEBSITE HELPS

INSTALLERS SELL DOORS

risant-Secure has a new website dedicated to

Ultion, its high quality, high security cylinder
door lock. Ultion is the lock that locks. The
website is designed to help fabricators and installers
sell more doors to homeowners.
Brisant CEO Steve Stewart says: The website uses
strong images, powerful videos and compelling facts.
Its an easy to use site thats ideal for educating
homeowners and generating enquiries for installers.
It hasnt been live for a full week yet and already
weve had over 150 visitors in one day, which is great
for such a new site.
Ultions story is that hooks and shootbolts depend
on cylinder locks, so the cylinder is the only thing
that stands in the way of someone walking into your
home and taking all the valuables they can find. If
youve left your car keys in view, burglars often drive
away in your car if its parked outside. The website
42 |August 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

explains the significant difference a high security

cylinder can make to home security and the big
difference between Ultion and other cylinders. Most
cylinders, including those awarded three stars, can be
disabled in under a minute. But in the real life Sold
Secure Diamond test skilled MLA locksmiths couldnt
get past Ultion after 2.5 hours of rigorous testing.
The website aims to help the industry sell more doors
by giving fabricators and installers the opportunity to
sell real security, adds Steve. People want to protect
their home and their family from burglars, and Ultion
does just that. Intruders cant get in through the door
because Ultion really does beat the burglars.
Ultions website is live at www.ultion-lock.co.uk.

new Liniar website goes live

nnovative systems house Liniar is proud to announce

the launch of its brand new website, which not only
showcases its impressive range of PVCu products but
also the talented team of people behind them.
Just like Liniars window profile, the new website was
designed from scratch after going back to the drawing

a responsive design to make it tablet and mobile friendly,
its the perfect way for visitors to find the information they
need whether theyre in the office, at home, or out and

The stunning new website is fully optimised for search

addition has been specifically designed to make it simple
for visitors to navigate.

46 |August 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

With a wider array of market sectors than most, it was a

challenge to deliver the right content to the right visitor.
To address this, the homepage has been divided into
sectors for quick navigation, whilst visitors wanting to
discover product information can find this from the main
navigation menu.
There are lots of goodies for Liniar customers, including

I think the secret behind a successful website lies
in the planning, in order to deliver the best possible
user experience, says Sue Davenport, Liniar Marketing

and working out who needed what information, so we
knew what we wanted before we even engaged a website

We chose to work with ICAAL (www.internetconsultancy.

windows industry knowledge and expertise in Search
Engine Optimisation. In addition ICAAL offered the
flexibility to help us bring our own page designs to life,
which ensures the website has the exact look and feel we
wanted to achieve.
Having a clear strategic vision really helped as the project
got underway, as it meant we could refer back to our
objectives when it came to daily decisions when building
the site. ICAALs consultancy skills were invaluable,
in addition to offering a collaborative approach with
support at every step of the way, and were delighted with
the outcome.
One of the most important requirements of the website
was creating it to be fully editable in-house for maximum
flexibility. In addition, a bespoke CMS and CRM are
integrated into the site, giving Liniar additional visibility,

CMS Window Systems who also install external

boosted its business development team to support
its growth in the new build housing sector with

For example, whole window U-values down to

Mick Riley Snr

Sales & Marketing Executive

Mick has a vast knowledge in sales being in the field of face to face selling for the past 12 years.
Winning numerous accolades it was a job he took to like a duck to water. People always say he has
the gift of the gab. A far cry from being a Coal board mechanic/fitter (which Mick is fully qualified
to do) in which Mick started out his professional life. However an accident in this job meant Mick
had to look elsewhere. This led Mick into the Sales area which he quickly became accustomed to. In
April 2014 Mick sat down for a cup of tea with his close friend Lee Clarke. Needless to say the rest
is history. Outside of work Mick enjoys rugby & shooting.

Nick Padley

International Film Festival) & 'The Kiss' (Bradford International Film Festival, Deaffest, Shuffle Film
Festival, NY Disabilities Film Festival, The Irish Deaf Film Festival & many more).

Mick Riley Jnr

Admin/Customer Liaison
Throughout School Mick wanted to be a PE Teacher. Heading off to uni at the age of 18 his sights
were firmly set on this road. However as many do at the age of 19 he fell in love & shortly after he
had a young family to think about. This meant that Micks first dream had to take a backward seat
for a new, more challenging dream to begin. Mick quickly got into work to provide for his family &
after 8 years at the forefront of face to face selling decided that in 2014 he wanted to take a more
relaxed & customer based role. This led to working at My Trade TV in the customer liaison/admin
role he is in today. Mick is in charge of chasing up all the press releases and advert artwork from
our clients. In his spare time Mick loves the sport of Rugby League, but admits it does fall short in
comparison to his young family who he loves to spend time with.

Deceuninck/VBH Golf Day above Par

VCu systems innovator Deceuninck, supported

by hardware partner VBH, recently hosted its
customer golf day at the prestigious Woburn Golf

Club.

Billed as the Deceuninck Championship Golf Experience,

around 90 of the industrys keenest golfers arrived for
breakfast and a spot of driving and putting practice
before setting off to the four corners of the Dukes
course for a shotgun start.
On a warm July day the golfers found the beautiful but
narrow pine, chestnut and silver birch lined fairways to
be a real challenge. The popular opinion of the golfers
as they hit the 19th hole was that it was a real privilege
to play Woburn, but some of their golf didnt always
match the setting! Were sure most players were simply
being modest but the fact that the club had been used
for British Open qualifying just a couple of weeks before
is proof of the testing nature of this par 72 course.
After a sumptuous three course dinner, a raffle and
auction were held to raise much needed funds for the
GM Fundraising charity, which does excellent work in
supporting Hope House Childrens Hospices.
Raffle prizes included an array of golf clothing and
equipment donated by Deceuninck and a pair of Club
Wembley tickets to Augusts Community Shield football
match donated by VBH. Woburn Golf Club themselves
donated a golf package for rounds on all three of its
courses. This very special prize was auctioned off and
raised almost 1000 for the charity.

All in all a great day was had by all involved, and our
big hearted industry proved again that relationships
can be built and cemented whilst having a great time

and dinner and drinks until late in the evening.
Building long-term relationships with our

During the evening meal, prizes were awarded to

the best teams and best individuals. A raffle and
auction raised money for GM Fundraisings Hope

four-ball round of golf and a three course meal to
the auction which raised over 800 for the charity.
The sun shone and the greens were fast on the

CENSolutions' Paul Scrivener Helps

Raise 3,500 for Teenage Cancer Trust

or the last three years Paul Scrivener, one of

CENSolutions nationwide team of Dedicated
Independent Consultants has dedicated
countless hours of his spare time to support two
organisations both committed to raising money for
the Teenage Cancer Trust. In the first five months of
2015, Paul has already co-ordinated and starred in
two concerts raising a combined 3,500 but between
both organisations he supports Specialized and
March of the Mods volunteers have raised a
collective total of 300,000 for this important charity
in the last 4 years.
Paul explains how he got involved: Ive always
loved music and particularly enjoy playing guitar
and singing, but a few years ago I realised I could
put these skills to use, raising money for this very
worthy cause. I play with two bands, The Special

Selection and the Kingston Ska Orchestra and both

have featured in all of the concerts I have helped to
organise as well as other bands from the local area.
In a concert last year I was even lucky enough to
play alongside The Specials lead guitarist, Mr Roddy
Radiation Byers. Both of the organisations I am
pleased to support combine music and raising money
for charity brilliantly its a great combination that
reaps real rewards for all involved.
The March of Mods charity was established in 2012
and was set up to raise money specifically for the
Teenage Cancer Trust by holding events across the
country in the Month of March. Individual volunteers
take responsibility for organising an event in their
own area. They can decide what format the event
takes, e.g. fashion show, scooter ride outs or music
concerts. Music is at the heart of each event

whatever the format takes with a DJ and original or

Specialized was set up by Paul Williams who had been
working very closely with The Specials to produce
two books that follow the bands history. Paul saw a
moving programme about the care of Teenage Cancer
patients and decided to put his love of The Specials
to work to raise money. The idea started as an album
of Specials covers by modern day artists but soon
became much more. Now it encourages amateur and
professional musicians to come together to perform
for the charity.

the UK. The Trust funds 28 specialist units within

ups and downs in the name of charity!

une 19th saw Mark Russell, Co-Director at

Northampton's MG Window Systems complete the
gruelling National Three Peaks Challenge, climbing
England, Scotland and Wales' three highest mountains
within 24 hours, to raise funds for charity.
MG Windows is a member of both the VEKA Approved
Installer Scheme and the glazing industry's leading
installer support organisation, Network VEKA, which
along with many others sponsored Mark in his quest,
raising a total of more than 1,500.
Mark explained: The funds will be split between
Cancer Research and the Old Northamptonians RFC
Benevolent Fund a charity set up to support those
who require financial assistance to partake in rugby,
whether it be for kit, fees, rehabilitation from injury;
you name it! Each year, club members undertake
a Chairmans Challenge as part of our fundraising
activities and, this year, the Three Peaks Challenge was
put forward. Together, we raised more than 12,000 for
the fund.
I was thrilled to receive so much support for the
challenge! Besides sponsorship, Network VEKA
donated a specially made t-shirt for the journey which,
as you can see from the photo, was perfect attire for
the weather conditions! It's great that they support
companies with more than just their business it really
adds to a community feel within the organisation,
where everybody wants their peers to succeed.

on completing the National Three Peaks it's an
unforgiving challenge and, so, really says something for
his dedication to the worthy causes he supported. The

its backing, and Mark should be incredibly proud of his

Liniar - as seen on TV!

Manufacturing is the lifeblood of this country and
were proud to be helping to lead the way with the
economic recovery.
Hot on the heels of appearing on the national
news, Liniar windows featured heavily in the BBC 2
programme The House That 100k Built on August 4.
The show followed South Lincolnshire couple Andrew
and Joann Thompsons attempts to not only build a
house from scratch for less than 100k, but for the
house to never generate a heating or electricity bill.
The couple chose Liniars energy efficient triple glazed
windows to help with the ambitious project.
In response to a Liniar tweet the morning after the
programme aired, Andrew wrote: @Liniarprofiles the
windows are great, the triple glazing enhances our
buildings performance so much!

iniar, the innovative and increasingly popular

brand of uPVC products, is on its way to become a
household name due to a stream of appearances
on national television.
HL Plastics, Liniars trading company, was selected by
BBC News to take part in the headline story of the
day on 28th July 2015, in a report about an increase
in the UKs quarterly Gross Domestic Product results
and the success driven by manufacturing firms now the
recession is over.
HL Plastics was chosen as an ideal example of a British
industry success story due to its consistent growth
through difficult economic times.
Extensive factory and vehicle footage was used
to illustrate the news story, which featured in the
lunchtime, 6 oclock and 10 oclock news slots, along
with a short interview with CEO Roger Hartshorn.
It was an honour for our company to be chosen to
highlight the upturn in the UKs GDP, said Roger about
his appearance.

Still to be aired is a Liniar fabricators charitable

involvement with BBC 1 show DIY SOS The Big
Build. Answering an appeal for Derbyshire companies
to assist in a major construction project, Langley Millbased Glazedale offered its services.
Filmed in mid-April, Glazedales installation team spent
five days on site fitting all of the windows and doors
as Nick Knowles and his crew built an extension to the
home of a family with a severely disabled child. Read
the full story at http://www.liniar.co.uk/news/liniarfabricator-answers-tv-sos-call/.
Liniar is no stranger to the TV cameras. HL Plastics
facilities played host to Prime Minister David Cameron
in May 2014. His factory tour and the following Q&A
session with 150 staff, where he praised the team
for its innovation and growth, was filmed by various
national and regional news stations (watch the video
at: http://www.liniar.co.uk/videos/the-prime-ministervisits-hl-plastics/).

Fitness Tracking

orking in search engine optimisation

(SEO) and digital marketing you become
accustomed to tracking everything, from
keyword positions to the links which are pointing
to the websites that you manage. It will come as
no surprise then that the habit of tracking almost
everything is something that I do with my fitness
too. From heartrate to glucose levels to BMI to body
fat percentage. Tracking is actually a great way to
stay motivated when you have targets to hit. I know
its an old clich but Im sure youve heard the one
about getting in a car without actually knowing your
destination. Youd just drive around aimlessly and
eventually get bored wouldnt you? Well, the same
is true with your health and fitness efforts. Without
goals its likely that you eventually give it up as a
bad job. You dont start to build a business without a
plan right? Nor would you begin to build a property
without a plan? The make it up as you go along
method just doesnt really work that well and often
ends in failure or, at least, a harder route than you
could have otherwise taken.

There is no set method of tracking your progress,

some people like to do it one way and some will
mix things up and it can be fun if you arent too
regimented in your approach. When I first started
running I had read somewhere that its a good idea
to try to run for 30 minutes as opposed to try to run
3 miles. This way you may end up running more or
less than 3 miles but will always be exercising for 30
minutes. If you can complete 3 miles in 25 minutes
then great, carry on running for another 5 minutes
and so on. Im not a long distance runner by the way
and have never taken part in an organised run. I just
run a few miles a few times per week for the health
benefits. But whats important is that my progress
is always tracked using a smartphone app and it
keeps me motivated to check the progress graph. I
can even compare my progress with friends which
is even more fun. If you have a competitive side
then you may enjoy trying to better your personal
bests. Ultimately, if your workouts are always the
same then youre bound to get bored and your body
will stop trying to adapt to the new stimulation that

decrease the chances of injury.

Try a few trackers and choose one that works for

you theres lots of exercise and health trackers out
there, many wearables, smartphones apps and so on.
Try a few out and choose one that you know youll
actually enjoy using. I still see some people in the
gym with a pencil and notepad this is fine, if this
works for you and you just cant get on with apps
then use traditional methods. The apps will certainly
help in terms of providing a dashboard view on your
progress etc but if you have a better workout and
can track your calories and macronutrients with a
notepad then go for it.
Keep on tracking Once youd started to track your
progress then keep up the good work. You may find
that your enthusiasm is high for a few weeks when
you first start using an app but then you may forget
or get bored of tracking your progress. This is when
you must keep your goals in mind. Think of the
bigger picture and remember that it only takes a few
minutes to track your progress.

Educate yourself about health and wellbeing - I

like to read lots and lots about working out, new
exercises, healthy food choices and so on. I think
that one of the great aspects of life is the acquisition
and sharing of knowledge so keep on learning.
Wake up early and go to bed early If you are a late
riser then try to get up earlier and stick to the routine
until it becomes natural. Youve heard that the early
bird catches the worm? You will be able to get lots
done even before you begin work for the day so why
not get a head start and workout while others are
still sleeping? Go to bed in the evening before youre
tried and relax.
Understand the data A pretty graph is just pretty
but is useless if you dont understand it. So take the
time to understand the metrics and youll get more
out of them.
Treat yourself and reward your efforts When
youve reached milestones then you should reward
yourself. When I could comfortably run 3 miles I
purchased myself some new Nike Air Vomero which

2015. It covers security and sets out the
requirements to ensure that easily accessible

ANNOUNCES
FINANCIAL
RESTRUCTURING

BH, the Stuttgart based hardware

distributor, has been undergoing financial
restructuring which has been completed
and announced at their AGM on 31st July. New
private investors have been welcomed on board
and are injecting Euro 26m into the group, with the
main contribution provided by Ascalon, a private
investment company owned by Mr Victor Trenev,
who is investing 20m.
In an official announcement, the Finance Director,
Mr Jeurgen Kassel says:
Mr Victor Trenev has been a holder of VBH shares
for many years and has good knowledge of our
company and the markets in which we operate.
He considers his engagement with VBH as having
important strategic potential in order to support
the further development of the European hardware
market. After the increase in share capital he will
potentially have a stake in excess of 50% of VBH
Holding AG. This equity participation however, will
have no influence on the operational activities of
the group companies. VBH will continue to operate
as an independent company in all markets.

Managing Director of VBH Peter Rowlands

comments:
The hardware market in Continental Europe has
been tough going in the last couple of years
especially since the political tensions with Russia
have been directly hitting exporters such as VBH.
Most of the main European manufacturers and
suppliers have been forced to make adjustments
in their operations to reflect the reality of reduced
market and VBH in Germany is no exception.
However, as the largest World Wide distributor
of branded hardware, VBH is well placed to take
advantage of market restructuring and the new
financing structure in Germany will ensure that
cash is available to invest in new logistic solutions
and customer facing technologies. In the UK we are
market leaders in branded hardware and expect to
continue to grow profitably. We are confident that
we have the right tools in place to continue to
consolidate our share of the UK hardware market
and our industry leading customer service and
large product portfolio means that our customers
will always have excellent choice and service to
keep them coming back.

VBH in the UK has been growing in strength and

Carl F Groupco's five year merger milestone

n 2010, Carl F Groupco was formed from the merger

of Groupco and Carl F. Celebrating the companys
fifth anniversary since the amalgamation of the two

Offering nearly 5,000 products, which equates to over

one of the largest hardware product ranges in the industry.
The company places its focus on service and technical
support which is backed by continued investment in staff,

Commenting on the landmark anniversary for the
organisation, Managing Director John Crittenden said:
We have remained true to our objective of offering

To single out just a few of our key achievements since

significant however, I would like to mention our ongoing
partnerships with leading manufacturers such as FUHR
and new relationships including Ingenious. A number of
our staff have been justifiably recognised with promotions

National Fenestration Awards Nominations

deadline day moved to 1st September

Nominations deadline moved to avoid Bank Holiday
The National Fenestration Awards have announced a
change to the original deadline day for the end of the
nominations phase.

Once the nominations phase ends, the NFA team will

begin g the shortlists for each category based on
the number of nominations companies/people have
received. The ones with the most will make it through.

To avoid the August Bank Holiday, the day is being moved

from Monday 31st August to Tuesday 1st September. The
day is being moved to ensure that people and companies
have as much a chance as possible at getting in those
all important last minute nominations.

Those shortlists will be announced on Monday 7th

September, with voting going live the day after. This is
when the industry will then get its chance to vote for
their overall winners.

There have been a record number of nominations

submitted this year. Genuine registered user numbers
have topped 1600 and continue to rise. There are also 6
new categories for this years competition, bringing the
total number of award categories for #NFA2015 to 19.
This makes the National Fenestration Awards the most
engaged and all-inclusive industry awards.

106|August 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Each and every nomination at this stage counts. One or

two could swing it one way or another. So its important
to get those last minute submissions in before deadline
day looms.

how to take part and to nominate can be found at www.

FIT SHOW ADDS 'QUARTZ' ENTRY LEVEL TO

INNOVATION ZONE:
Central Bar, Lounge & Hospitality areaswill be a 'Hotspot'

ith more than 85% of stand space now

booked with eight months to go until the
event takes place in April 2016, organisers
of The FIT (Fabricator Installer Trade) Show are
continuing to work hard to offer new experiences
and to encourage new exhibitors to dip their toes at
the show. The newly created Innovation Zone with
its incorporated Lounge and Bar areas at the event is
attracting big names within days of being revealed.
Hosting the only official bar at The FIT Show and
set to be the scene of the popular Exhibitor Party
at the end of the first day, the Innovation Zone is
expected to become one of the liveliest areas at the
event. Quartz stands have been added to the area
to encourage first time exhibitors to experience the
FIT Effect and bring with them innovative new ideas.
Stands are now available from just 3,000 plus VAT.
Taking a radically different approach to the other
areas the intimate atmosphere of The Innovation
Zone will encourage visitors to linger longer, attracted
by the Lounge and Bar facilities and of course an
eclectic mix of exhibitors. The avant-garde design
of the central exhibition area has already attracted
a number of key names with the list changing daily.
The FIT Show web site (www.fitshow.co.uk) should be
checked regularly for updates.
The FIT Shows Matthew Glover is excited about
the Innovation Zone: The FIT Show in just its third
outing remains fresh but we will always be looking at
ways to improve the exhibitor and visitor experience.
And after a great deal of research and discussion
we believe that The Innovation Zone will bring
something different.
It will be less formal than the other areas of The
FIT Show not least because the hub of the area is
the Central Bar and Lounge area. People visit The FIT
Show to do business but here it will be mixed a little
more with pleasure. That is especially true of VIP
guests, who will enjoy a free drink in The Innovation
109|August 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Zone as well as other benefits including VIP parking.

Excellent signage, the promise of a comfortable chair
and a refreshing drink will ensure The Innovation
Zone will draw a high degree of traffic, in addition to
a great deal of noise as the day progresses.
The FIT Show takes place at The International
Centre Telford on the 12th, 13th and 14th April 2016.
Although more than 85% of the enlarged exhibition
space has been sold, some excellent stands are still
available but are continuing to sell fast. Further
information is available at www.fitshow.co.uk/standpackages.

HOT COMPOSITE DEVELOPMENT FROM

HURST PLASTICS

urst Plastics has enhanced its composite fire

door range and launched a complementary
composite side panel which has successfully
passed testing at BM Trada.
The launch follows an inteansive period of research
and product development at the company. Hurst is
now one of a just a handful of suppliers to offer a
complete FD30S rated package, which includes a
composite fire door plus fire rated top light and side
light.
Hurst Plastics was an early entrant into the composite
fire door market and had seen an increased demand
for a complete solution in recent years. Mark Atkinson,
Hurst Plastics Sales Director, explains: Our composite
fire door is designed to the highest specification
and it has been used extensively in applications
which require a fully approved FD30S fire doorset,
including flats, shared entrances and multiple
entrance dwellings. We were however keen to extend
the reach of our composite fire door and invest in the

development of complementary products that also

resist the passage of fire. The introduction of this
side light allows specifiers to create contemporary,
light-filled entrances using advanced products that
do not compromise on safety or security.
Hurst worked closely with a number of the industrys
top material suppliers to develop the new side light.
It incorporates a Eurocell series 70 PVC-u outer
frame and Pyrodur fire rated double glazed units
from Pilkington. The side lights are manufactured at

The Hurst composite fire door is outwardly

KOMMERLING'S Q FOR
PATIO DOORS

mmerling is launching their new PremiLine

PRO patio door that carries Secured by Design
and is fully Document Q compliant, without
the need for any plunge bolts or exterior security
measures. Importantly, it also satisfies the requirement
for Lifetimes Homes for the social housing market.
PVCu patio doors have generally failed to achieve
the high security standards that we see elsewhere
in the PVCu window industry, specifically at the
interlock and therefore cant be installed in new build
applications under the new legislation with their
current specification. PremiLine PRO is been developed
to meet the new legislation and also satisfies a need to
make handles/controls no higher than 1200mm from
the floor, under the criteria set by the Lifetimes Homes
standard.
This new product comes as of a result of a 6-month
development programme with Fullex Locks and recent
testing at BRE was a resounding success with the
door resisting all the forces applied to it with aplomb.
Theres an enhanced security upgrade kit available
from Kmmerling for their network of fabricators,
which includes a bespoke interlock shootbolt system
that is operated by a small stylish doorknob to the side
face of the interlock.

120|August 2015 | www.mytrade.tv

Given Kmmerlings pedigree for product engineering,

this development will provide their customers with
additional sales opportunities and with a product thats
simple to operate, fully secure and doesnt rely on face
fixed plunge bolts. Such is the confidence in the security
upgrade, that Fullex Locks are offering a security
guarantee scheme*, offering up to 1,000 to replace any
damaged PremiLine PRO door and compensate for the
intrusion in the event of break-in, for up to 10 years
after the installation date.
Kevin Warner head of sales and marketing of
Kmmerling concludes: This has been a fundamental
product development for us and in partnership with
Fullex Locks. Our customers can now offer an enhanced
patio door solution, thats both secure and doesnt rely
on any unsightly external security additions.
He continues: I believe our range of door systems
is unsurpassed in the UK, with our lift and slide

from fabricators and installers alike.

GEORGE CLARKE

If you look back at the history of the market, every

composite door supplier developed a brochure
aimed at the retail consumer to show them the
colours and styles of their doors; the range of
glass bevels available to them, and the choice of
handles, knockers, numerals and ancillary items
they could choose from. They also worked on the
basis that the trade installer would use the same
brochure as a sales aid and for many years they
did just that.
But times have changed significantly I have
spoken often about how the internet has impacted
consumer behaviour enabling them to carry out
extensive research into what they want and how
fuelled by the wave of home makeover programmes

uPVC bi-fold doors the best of both worlds

TV shows such as Grand Designs have set
the bar high for homeowners selling the
dream and promoting the very best property
upgrades. But while, in an ideal world, we all
might love to have golden taps and
diamond-encrusted door handles the reality
is that this isnt an ideal world and very few of
your potential customers will have money to
burn.
But being practical and frugal doesnt mean that
your clientele have to compromise their design principals and desires especially when it comes to choosing bi-folding doors.
Chris Armes, Design and Development Manager at
Liniar, looks at the many advantages of uPVC
bi-folding doors and why they are an increasingly
popular choice.
Traditionally seen as the poor relation to other
materials, uPVC has made leaps and bounds over the
past 10 years and is now, in many ways, considered
a much better option to timber and aluminium. And
that is, in no small way, thanks to Liniar - recognised as
the most innovative company in its field today.
Long gone are the days when you could choose
any colour, just so long as it was white. With chunky
frames now a thing of the past, modern PVCu doors
are available in a wide range of different colours and
wood grain effects with slim sightlines, making them
easily as aesthetically pleasing as their timber or
aluminium counterparts.
The Liniar ModLok bi-fold door, launched in 2014,
heralded a new breed of uPVC bi-folding doors,

offering the strength and security of aluminium

combined with the thermal benefits of uPVC. With a
string of patents and registered designs, our bi-folding
door system comes with an optional low,
family-friendly threshold.
The patented ModLok locking mechanism provides
strength, seamlessly combining the doors reinforcement with the lock and providing the highest levels
of security, at a lower cost than similar aluminium or
timber door sets.
And, unlike other bi-fold doors that come in
complicated kit form to be built from scratch on-site,
Liniars bi-folds are supplied ready to fit, making them
installer-friendly and saving time and money.
So, that shows that uPVC can be just as equally
aesthetically appealing as timber and aluminium, but
what other common misconceptions can we correct?
There are many, but lets start with being eco-friendly
and thermally efficient.
There has been a real surge towards sustainable
materials in recent years another reason that uPVC
is the ideal choice. uPVC is 100% recyclable and can
be recycled up to 10 times, giving each door an
estimated life span of 350 years far more
eco-friendly than depleting timber sources.
uPVC can also be made from 100% lead-free
materials which is obviously better for both family
living and the environment. They use less energy to
produce in the factory, in comparison to both
aluminium and timber. Plus the on-going energy
savings are higher, with uPVC achieving 10 times
more BFRC A ratings compared to the nearest
alternative.

August 2015 | www.mytrade.tv |126

Thermal efficiency is key to sustainable living, with

increasing importance placed on lower U-values than
ever before. Its well known that uPVC is a low
conductor of heat, helping to retain it within a
building and keep the cold out. This is further
enhanced by multiple chambers inside the profiles,
allowing them to trap air and create a thermal barrier.
Add double or triple glazing to a uPVC frame and
U-values as low as 1.0 w/mk can be achieved.
Considering uPVC is likely to save cost for consumers
typically this material has not only a lower purchase
price and lower installation costs but also lower
maintenance costs.

tives make them tough enough to suit UK

requirements. In addition, the lightweight nature of
a uPVC frame makes it easier to handle and install,
reducing time on site for fitters and contractors.
uPVC windows are also ideal for the damp British
weather. The frames will not swell and co-extruded
seals and gaskets make them completely water tight
and draught-free.
With both timber and aluminium frames, the seals are
added in afterwards. Joints can also shrink back over
time, causing gaps in the seals.
With uPVC, the seals and gaskets are welded together
as part of the extrusion process, providing a
continuous seal all the way round and eliminating
draughts for longer.
With a wide choice of colours and finishes available,
uPVC bi-folding doors can give a home the desired
appearance at an overall lower cost.
So you can assure your customers that by opting for
the cheaper option, they really are saving money
without compromising on style to put it simply, theyll
be getting the best of both worlds.

With uPVC, the on-going maintenance consists of a

simple wipe down with warm soapy water, making
them simpler and more cost effective to look after.
Contrast this with timber they need treating or
painting on a regular basis, which is time consuming
and can be costly. Aluminium can fade and oxidise
when exposed to the sun, often requiring the use of
specialist cleaners and coatings to restore. Durability
is also an important factor to consider. uPVC frames
will not rot, corrode, warp or split, and special addi-

my initial fears seem to be true. The fact that
only 1 lower league team have beaten a Super
league side so far. Although it was a fantastic result
for Bradford against Salford can we realistically
look and say there will be a change in Super League
next Year. I think that we will still have the same 12
teams in Super League. Meaning all the hard work
from the likes of Leigh and Bradford would be for
nothing. Ill admit that weve had some fantastic
games and some very close calls but in the end the
Championship teams have come second best.

Englands Full Back come
the end of the season. With
the form that Zak Hardaker

displace Sam Tomkins and

on this, although I havent
watched much Australian
rugby this year the sounds
Ive

regarding
Tomkins seem to be that he
is having a brilliant year as well.
With other names Ive heard thrown into this debate,
such as Jamie Shaul of Hull and Stefan Ratchford of
Warrington we seem to have an abundance of quality
to fight for that that No. 1 jersey. Ive even heard of
Greg McNally from Leigh being mentioned, although
as he has been an Irish international I dont see this
being the case.

Meanwhile in the Super 8s can anyone realistically

stop Leeds at the moment? With the way they are
playing you wouldnt bet against them at the present
moment in time. Going for the treble of the Minor
Premiership, Challenge Cup and the Grand Final all
in the same year. Yes its been done before by Saints
in 2006 and Bradford in 2003, But with the fact of it
being Kevin Sinfield and Jamie Peacocks last season
in the game I for once will be cheering on Leeds to
give these 2 giants of the game the send-off they

To finish this month off I have to mention my team

GQA headline 'Young Persons' category at

National Fenestration Awards

QA Qualifications is delighted once again to be

a main sponsor of the National Fenestration
Awards. Now in its third year, the awards are
rapidly growing in popularity with the industry, and
with 15 categories there is something for everybody.
Supporting the National Fenestration Awards is really
important to us at GQA Qualifications says CEO Mick
Clayton.
It is important for us to be involved in this type of
people recognition; it is into the fenestration industry
that most of our qualifications are issued and we
are more than keen to remain close to it so we can
understand its requirements and respond to them.
Sponsoring the NFAs seemed to us to be a logical
step; they are becoming very popular and we are
delighted to be on board. We are especially excited
to be sponsoring the Young Person of the Year Award,
a subject which is close to our heart, and we would
recommend everybody to get involved.
Speaking for the National Fenestration Awards Jason
Grafton Holt commented Were delighted that GQA
Qualifications are a main sponsor of the awards once
again. When we first set out to expand the sponsorship
of the awards, we wanted to work with companies that
made a real difference to the industry, companies that
had a real passion for what they do and a passion to
make a difference. Once we had spoken to Mick Clayton,
we knew wed found an ideal partner.

the industry, and theyre at the forefront of delivering

NVQ qualifications and MTC compliance. Their ethos
around people fits in with our own ideals of rewarding
the very best people and companies around, and
especially those who often get overlooked.
It was their focus on apprenticeships that impressed
us the most. As the awards were set up we purposely
created the Young Person category to dispel the myth
that the majority of all young people were lazy and
didnt want to work. GQA honed in on that category in
particular and decided that they wanted to put their
name to it.
They have been with us from the outset and their
support early on ensured that the National Fenestration
Awards grew from an online experiment into a fully
fledged genuine industry awards.
The support for the awards from GQA Qualifications
has been fantastic and we hope to continue working
with them for a long time to come.
We would absolutely encourage all companies to
nominate their young people and to get involved in
these awards.

to DJ the tree house stage with a 2 hour time slot for
a Bassport.fm radio takeover. Filling the bill was Us,
Duburban Poison & Duffer the radio station owner.
Also playing were fellow radio station DJs Mudstompin
Munkee & Munkixx along with DJ competition winners.

it went dark for some drum & bass was extra special as
its my favorite genre to play live. Check out the video

The Bass Lab was a great success. This was the first
time I had been involved with more than just DJing at
a festival. We wanted to promote the radio station as
much as possible, so talked with the festival directors
about running a gazebo with decks & speakers. They
allowed us to pitch up & broadcast / record the festival
on the station. We also interviewed a lot of the headline
acts including Krossbow, Ital tek, Dephicit & Summer
Bright, Terrorbyte, Duskky & Bunkle & more! The Bass
Lab was a great space to kick back & relax with hay
bails to sit on & music being mixed live. We also ran live
music production tutorials thanks to the Route 1 Audio
lads. I want to thank Chris Duffer & all the Bassport FM
radio team for their hard work. Also big thank you to
the filmers, photographers & event organisers for such
an amazing festival. Tickets are already on sale for next
year & you can grab yours here. Find out more about
Bassport.FM radio station here.
