Installer Trade (FIT) Show, already confirmed
as the biggest trade event for the window, door,
conservatory and glass industries for at least a decade,
is now live on the FIT Show website.
Registering early brings benefits to visitors through
regular updates that allow advanced planning for the
event. Of these perhaps the most important will be the
ability to skip past the queues straight into the halls
with a simple swipe of a personalised badge. Only preregistered visitors will receive their entry badge in
advance.
A Save the Date button automatically generates a
calendar entry in users diaries. A further convenience
will be the advanced information about exhibitors
and products that pre-registered visitors will receive
in addition to information such as details of the FIT

More than 170 exhibitors, the most yet at The FIT Show,
will occupy four halls at The International Centre,
Telford on the 12th, 13th and 14th April 2016. With a

gap of almost two years since the last event hundreds

first time with many being launched at The FIT Show. It
is known that the event will be used to launch a number
of brand new window systems, in addition to the largest
number of trade fabricators and machinery suppliers to
appear at any UK trade show for the industry for at least
ten years.
This show really reflects the tremendous, positive
attitude that prevails in the market amongst

From powder to profile


The Liniar brand is synonymous with innovation and quality, with a range
of windows, doors and conservatories designed and manufactured by HL
Plastics at a state-of-the-art extrusion facility in the heart of the UK.
But what exactly is extrusion?

Plastics, explains the process of
how powder is transformed into
profile

Starting at the silos


Unlike many of our competitors,
Liniar lead-free PVCu window
profile is fully manufactured in
Britain. The process of extrusion
begins with the delivery of resin to
our silos. We have eight in total, four
of which are for the delivery of the
raw ingredients that are used in the
mixing plant to produce our dry
blend.
The resin passes through the
mixing plant and four other
materials are added. Its then
transported into the four
production silos ready to be
transferred to the extrusion lines in
the factory.

Mixing it up

Extrusion solutions

Our mixing plant is one of the


biggest in Europe and has been
custom-built to cope with the
demands of production and we
only use the highest quality,
lead-free raw materials.
Those ingredients are transferred
from the silos and smaller
additive stations to a holding
hopper where they are weighed
before being added to a heater
mixer.
A temperature of 120C is
applied to blend all of the
ingredients together and then
dropped into the cooler mixer
where the temperature will be
brought back down to 40C before
being transferred into bags or a
silo.

Each of our silos has the facility to


connect to any of our 32
extrusion lines, enabling us to
accommodate for any possible
requirement and maximise
productivity.
The powder is transported by
vacuum from one of the silos
outside into a hopper, which
controls the rate of flow to the feed
port of the extruder barrel.

The purpose of an extruder is to


melt, mix and pump the plastics
material to the die at a steady rate
and constant temperature using
a screw; very much like a kitchen
mincer with a screw inside a barrel
and a feed chamber, or hopper, on
top.
The screw is rotated by a
motor and the plastics material
is heated as the screw conveys it
along the barrel to the die, which
determines the shape of the
product. The die, which can be
quite complex in design, is simply
a shaped opening through which
the plasticised material, or melt, is
pushed.
When the screw is rotated the
material is carried along and
compressed. The friction created
generates heat which converts the
solids into a plasticised or semi
molten state, mixing the
material in the process.
The melt, or extrudate, is pumped
out of the die at 192C and then
formed in a water-cooled
calibrator by vacuum, before
being cooled in water baths
containing tank plates.

Keeping cool
Its worth mentioning that when
the new HL Plastics factory
building was designed, one of the
key requirements was to keep the
water for the extrusion process
controlled in a facility where it
could be easily looked after. For
that reason our water pits are
located underneath the factory.
We felt that this was vital for
operational reasons. There are no
pipes or utilities on show, making
for a safer and neater working
environment, and any required
service and maintenance can be
carried out without affecting
production. Being able to carry out
work underground means that the
installation of new machinery lines
is much simpler.
We have three separate
water pits which provides added
resilance to production should
a problem occur. Also, because
these pits were built underneath
the factory, it stops pests being
able to contaminate the water and
prevents any freezing during the
winter months.

Water purification and filtration


systems have been introduced to
assist with the process and the
water is dosed with chemicals
to keep it clean and prevent the
growth of any bacteria.

Fantastic gasket
The co-extrusion process takes
place further down the line. This
is where Liniars patented flexible
bubble gasket is added to the
rigid profile using a separate
co-extruder.
The gasket is bonded onto the
profile using pressure and heat, so
the seals dont have to be added
at the fabrication stage. Once
adhered to the profile, it proceeds
through a cooling vacuum tank.
The extrusion process is a
continuous one, so a constant
pulling of the profile is necessary
to maintain shape, accuracy and
dimensions. Once it passes through
the haul-off section, protective tape
is applied before the profile is cut to
length on a saw unit.

Quality assured
We place the utmost value in the
excellence of our facilities and the
products we manufacture - our
factory has achieved BS EN ISO
9001:2008 accreditation to meet
British Standards for a quality
management system.
The quality control department is
essential to inspect the condition of
the profiles that are produced;
Liniar profiles are examined 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
Every hour an operator will
perform a dimensional, functional
and colour check on the profile,

while every four hours a shadow


graph is used.
A section of profile is cut and
placed on a magnifying lens to
project the shape on to a diagram
so that dimension, shape and
parallelism can be assessed to be
certain of perfection.

Out of the factory


Once the profile has been
produced, wrapped and packed,
its moved to a holding area where
its checked to ensure that the
quantities and component names
are correct.
If the profiles are due to be foiled,
they are sent to our in-house foiling
plant, where Liniars high quality
coloured woodgrain foils are fitted
using the latest high-tech
machinery.
If not, they are picked up and
taken over to the warehouse, then
checked again before being
added to stock. Our S.A.P. system
records each movement within the
operation, helping us to keep track
of all products.

Our warehouse contains stock of
all the different Liniar products.
Customer orders are picked here
and then packed into stillages to
be loaded onto one of our fleet of
lorries. Once ready, theyre
delivered to our nationwide
network of fabricator customers to
be transformed into beautiful

by Dales father Michael, is now co-directed by
husband-and-wife team Dale and Karen Wilson,
with their son Callum having joined recently too.
It was Karen that suggested we extend our offering
with a new window option, Dale explains. There
are numerous companies within our target area
that were stocking the same systems as us. We
wanted to differentiate ourselves and widen our
audience in the process.
Over time, wed become disillusioned with
our previous supplier. The support promised in
their promotional materials never seemed to
materialise; when systems changed, no training
was provided; and if issues arose as a result, they
did everything possible to distance themselves.
I have a contact at Glazerite who now fabricate
our windows who invited us to view some VEKA

systems, and weve not looked back since! Theres

supplier, and thats already been reflected in an
increased uptake since we made the move. At the
moment were booking in jobs for three months
time a great start to our relationship with VEKA.

completing an NVQ in Performing Manufacturing
Operations (PMO).
Quickslide is highly regarded for its sliding sash windows,
and the company has been instrumental in making this
former niche product popular, while manufacturing a
wide range of other styles of windows and doors.
Our success as a company hinges on the ability of our
staff to make some of the best windows in the industry,
explained Quickslides managing director Michael
Connor. Therefore, we raised our game and improved
the skills of our employees by putting 58 of them on a
course with Track Training.
The PMO NVQ Diploma is designed to cover the skills
and knowledge in one or more of a wide variety of
manufacturing activities.
Assessors looked for many key indicators of competent
behaviour, including: controlling manufacturing
operations; inspecting the quality of a finished product;
and working effectively as part of a team.
Quickslide employee Simon Bedford, who is often found

in charge of the glazing element of window manufacturer,


explained why the course was important to him.
When I started work at Quickslide, I knew next to
nothing about window manufacture, he said. However,
over the last 3 years, I have been trained to make frames
to a very high standard, fit industry leading hardware,
and fully inspect a window to pick up on any defects.
While there are many people in this country making
windows, my diploma proves that along with my 57
colleagues I am among the best at doing it. It also
proves that Quickslide is keen recognise excellence in
the workplace.
Michael also explained that it was important to remember
the operator in what has become an increasingly
automated industry. Window machinery speeds up the
window making process and takes away much of the
hard work from the employee, he said. Unfortunately,
this can lead to a dumbing down, meaning problems are
not spotted fast enough if they occur. By putting our
employees on a course, we know that they are critical of
the manufacturing process from when the order comes
in to when the window leaves on the back of a lorry. And,
ultimately, our customers will benefit from that.

OTT

Ott was doomed to be a teenager in the cultural

wasteland that was the mid-1980s provincial England.


After a brief period wandering aimlessly through the
hairsprayed deserts of New Romanticism and poodle-rock
he found refuge in the warm, inviting sounds of Scientist,
King Tubby, LKJ, and Prince Far-I and the effortless grace
of European experimentalists Neu! and Kraftwerk.

t is rare these days that I hear new music that


captivates me to the very core and ticks all the
boxes of my expansive taste. However, 8 Months
ago a friend recommended Otts music to me and upon
checking his discography I was left wanting more and
more. Marketed to me as a psychedelic dub producer,
hes not far wrong, however upon listening to his
discography on repeat I hear a lot of different styles
fused together, which is something I love. Ott takes
elements of psytrance, experimental sound design,
glitch, breaks and most importantly dub/reggae and
has made up his own sound Ottsonic. No one has
impressed me this much in years.
As an avid follower of dub/reggae music it was
refreshing to hear Otts take on dub, fusing electronic
styles inspired by Kraftwerk with melodicas and guitar
skanks taken from the reggae sound. I particularly
love his electronic melodica sound that almost sounds
synthesized due to the effects he uses. This is not
something I hear often in dub music. It was not until
I watched one of his live shows that I saw him using
synthesizers to create these melodica sounds. When
Ott plays live he gets a full band in and performs as
Ott and the all seeing eye. If your interested check

Heres some more info on Ott pulled from his official


biography. The end of the 1980s brought with it a
cultural and musical revolution and Ott headed to
London to immerse himself in the new energy. Initially
unimpressed by the frantic, unmusical clatterings of acid
house and rave he discovered a new wave of artists who
apparently shared his love of organic dub and pristine
electronics. Artists such as The Orb, Dub Syndicate,
FSOL and African Head Charge. These were people who
were unafraid to combine bass-heavy rhythm, abstract
soundscape and timeless melody into a huge, evershifting sonic universe which reflected perfectly the spirit

of hope and positivity which prevailed.


It was at this point that Ott found his first work as an
engineer in several studios around North London.
Working obsessively, 18 hours a day, seven days a week
for the next ten years, Ott developed his engineer skills
working with artists such as Brian Eno, The Orb, Youth,
African Head Charge, Steve Hillage, and On-U-Sound.
After mastering his studio skills, Ott celebrated the end
of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st by
giving it all up and moving to a remote cottage in South
West England to be alone with his cats and his studio.
Here he embarked on a series of sonic experiments,
drawing heavily on the classic dub sounds from Jamaica
and hypnotic electronic pulse from Germany which had
provided such a refuge during the 1980s. A period of
intense creativity followed, during which a great many
tracks were created and then stashed away on tapes.

He has just finished his fifth full length album called


Fairchild released spring 2015. You can buy that
here. Although I have recently been admiring his
remix album of Hallucinogen tunes Hallucinogen in
Dub released in 2002.
