Academic integrity

Demonstrating the values of honesty, trust,

fairness, respect and responsibility in all
academic endeavours, including preparing and
presenting work for assessment as part of
coursework or research.
What does this mean to you?
At UOWD, we support the promotion of the
five values in all academic endeavours in
teaching, learning and research. Students and
staff of UOWD are expected to conduct
themselves in a manner that reflects these
values, to ensure the protection of the
Universitys reputation and standards for
current and future students and staff.
Students and staff who endeavour to acquire
academic integrity are doing so with their
actions of fairness and ethics.
The reputation of our academic work is
founded on whether others can use it
with confidence and feel confident that
their own contributions will be
acknowledged. Similarly, the reputation
of our University and respect for the
value of the qualifications we gain from
it are earned and maintained through
the integrity of our work.

Warning:
If you intentionally plagiarize you are
behaving unethically, which means
you are not demonstrating UOWDs
graduate qualities and the penalties
can be very sever and unpleasant.

your sources differently in the
past.

What is Plagiarism?
It is simply using someone elses words or
ideas and claiming them as your
own.
Types of plagiarism and penalties at UOWD
1.Plagiarism = copying or using someone
elses work without proper
acknowledgment. This can be sentences,
paragraphs or sections.
2.Severe plagiarism = submitting work which
is wholly copied from someone
else without proper acknowledgement.

Why is plagiarism such an important issue?

It is cheating and fraud
It is totally unethical
It can lead to devaluing of degrees
UOWD takes it very seriously and students
found plagiarizing will ultimately
be expelled.
Other related issues
Cheating
This involves using, or attempting to use,
unauthorized material in an
academic exercise such as an exam.
E.g. using crib notes or cheat sheet in an
exam, looking at another
students paper in an exam, using someone
elses solution or program
Fabrication
This involves falsifying or inventing results or
citation in any academic
exercise.
E.g. entering false data in a log book, giving
false survey results, adding
unused references to your reference list,
changing your answer before
submitting your paper for a regrade.
How can you avoid plagiarism?
Planning
Begin planning your assignments at the start
of the session
Create a timetable of all your assessments
Allocate enough time to prepare and write
up your assignments

Preparation
Research your assignments properly
before you start writing
You will need a lot of time to read
around the subject
Take careful notes as you read
Draw up an outline/plan and then write
a draft
Redraft and edit your work until you are
satisfied with it
If you need help, ask your lecturer/tutor
well BEFORE the deadline
Referencing and citation
Familiarize yourself with the Harvard
referencing system included in your
subject outlines
Find our more about proper referencing
and citation UOW library website
and Unilearning website

Attend a Learning Development
workshop on referencing and citation see
notice boards / UOWD website for

Remember just providing a reference
list at the end of your assignment is
NOT giving proper acknowledgement
you must use in-text citations to avoid
Plagiarism
