Paschal Mystery Semester Exam

1. There are five main reasons the Word became flesh. 1. To make expiation for our sins. 2. To
manifest Gods love for humanity. 3. To offer a model of holiness. 4. To allow people to share in
Christs divine life. 5. To destroy the power of the devil.
2. Jesus is divine through his life and ministry. His God like quality shows, when he heals a
Paralyzed Man, Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, Your sins are forgiven, or to say,
Get up, take your mat and walk? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on
earth to forgive sins. So he said to the man, I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home. He
got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they
praised God, saying, We have never seen anything like this! (Mark 2:9-12). At first, the people
were angry that Jesus was forgiving sins because of their misjudgment by that thinking he was
just a regular person. Soon, Jesus is able to change their minds about his authority and his divine
powers by healing and telling a paralyzed man to walk. In addition to his divine powers, Jesus
also states that his father is God, My Father is at work until now, so I am at work (John 5:17).
Jesus is saying that God, his father, was busy helping humanity to repent for their sins but now
he will be taking over his work. Just like how a son takes over after their father, Jesus takes over
his fathers job by forgiving peoples sins. By saying his father is God, Jesus essentially
expresses that he has a personal relationship with God. His personal relationship with God in
Heaven causes him to be close to the same substance as him, making Jesus divine.
3. Immaculate Conception is very different from what the Annunciation is and what Catholics
believe it to be. Catholics may think that the Immaculate Conception is Marys virgin birth of
conceiving Christ or Mary being conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit like Jesus.

These assumptions are not true. The Immaculate Conception is that Mary conceived without
Original Sin or its corrupt nature. When the angel Gabriel greets Mary, he says Hail, full of
grace, the Lord is with you" (Luke 1:28). Gabriels words confirm that Mary has no Original Sin.
Original Sin is the deprivation of sanctifying grace which passes down in humans. Since Mary is
full of grace, she has no Original Sin this is Immaculate Conception. The Annunciation is when
Gabriel announced to Mary on March 25th, she will conceive a child named Jesus.
5. Davids kingship foreshadows Christs kingship in many ways. When David was a shepherd in
Bethlehem, he led a flock of sheep. Just like how David was a shepherd guiding sheep to a
pasture, Jesus became a shepherd to his followers guiding them to the right path. David also
foreshadows Christs leadership when he creates powerful kingdom in Israel that won many
battles. Jesus establishes a holy kingdom with many faithful followers that battle against sin.
8. In the chapter The Perfect Penitent, C.S. Lewis notes that repentance is a type of death. This
is true because when you repent, you are unlearning all of the self-conceit and self-will that you
enhanced on over the years. Repenting causes you to kill a part of yourself which was the selfconceit and self-will that you had, thus making you undergo a type of death.
12. God became man to save us from sin so man could be put right with God and be given a
fresh start. Human nature alone cannot overcome sin by itself. God himself must partake in
human nature to redeem mankind. He experiences human nature through his son Jesus, For God
so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but
have eternal life (John 3:16). He was able to communicate with man. In addition to
experiencing mans will and suffering through Jesus. By becoming man, God is able to perfectly
fulfill his work to overcome sin by redeeming us with a human heart and will.

13. One of the main reasons the Word became flesh was to make expiation for our sins. Since the
fall of man, humans have been carrying sin. For people to reconcile with God we must amend
our sins. Every time we commit a bad act we must pay back for the act we did. For example, a
robber steals money from a store and soon gets captured. In order for the robber to amend his
bad deed he must go to jail. Through Jesus, God compensates our sins by providing us with a
perfect sacrifice. An infinitely serious sin demands an infinitely perfect sacrifice. Jesus is the
perfect sacrifice to compensate for our sins.
