S20.20 Overview

ANSI/ESD S 20.20 and E SD T R 20.20- Handbook

S20.20 Overview
Applies to all activities from
device level packaging to field
service
Level of control to 100 volts HBM
Guidance provided for more
sensitive parts and applications
(Handbook available from ESD
Association)

S20.20 Overview
A.

All conductors in the environment, including

personnel, must be bonded or electrically
connected and attached to a known ground or
contrived ground (as on shipboard or on
aircraft).

S20.20 Overview
B.

Assessment of the ESD hazard created by

electrostatic charges on the necessary nonconductors in the work place is required.

S20.20 Overview
C. Transportation of ESDS items outside an
Electrostatic Protected Area requires enclosure
in static protective materials.

Requirements

Administrative and Technical

Elements
Administrative and Technical Elements are
contained within a properly written ESD
Control Program Plan. The Plan contains
the following Elements:

ESD Control Plan

Training Plan
Compliance Verification Plan
Detailed Technical Elements

Compliance Verification Plan

Identify the requirements that must be
verified Technical elements in the
Plan
Establish the frequency and type of
verification that must occur (internal
and external audits, certification etc.).
Select appropriate test equipment based
on industry standards.

Protected Areas
Protected area design depends on application.
Area must be marked with proper signage.
Access to Protected Area limited to trained
personnel only. Untrained personnel must be
escorted by trained personnel.
Removal of all nonessential insulators required.
Ionization or charge mitigating techniques
required to neutralize charge on essential
insulators if the charge level is considered a threat.

Point of Use

Protected Area Definition

EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area):
A defined location with the necessary
materials, tools and equipment capable of
controlling static electricity on all items
entering or used within specified boundaries.

Packaging
ESD Protective Packaging and
package marking must be in
accordance with customer
requirements.
If not defined by contract, purchase
order, drawing or customer
documentation, the Plan needs to
define the protective packaging
requirements.

Packaging
Packaging shall be defined for all material
movement within Protected areas, between
job sites and within field service operations.

Packaging Considerations
The type of packaging used depends on sensitivity
of items and where the parts are going.
The intent of ESD protective packaging is to prevent a
direct electrostatic discharge from affecting packaged
parts, allow for dissipation of charge from the package
exterior, and minimize charging of the packaged items
from external electrostatic fields and
triboelectrification.
