TATWORTH WI MEETING REPORT

DECEMBER 17th 2015
As usual at this time of year, our December meeting took
the form of a Christmas Party. We enjoyed a delicious meal
provided by Liz Beale and friends, including Christmas
crackers and wine. Entertainment was provided by
members. Rosemary Heeks gave a very amusing reading
based on the 12 Days of Christmas. June Chubb performed
a hilarious monologue as though she was an elderly and
very Somerset WI lady. (which she is!), and then a very
abbreviated version of Cinderella by Marion Cock and
friends.

TATWORTH WIVES GROUP 2016

Hester Down writes:

Our 2016 programme began as in previous years with our
New Year Cheer Party which this year took the form of a
traditional afternoon tea party before which we were
entertained by Ellie Baer who sang songs she had written
herself to her own accompaniment on the piano. During the
course of the afternon a cheque for 1,100 was presented
to the Rev Tim Price towards the planned extra storage
accomodation for the Church Room which was our
nominated project for 2015. Our chosen fundraising project
for 2016 will be The Munchkins (The Miniature Shetland
Ponies at Southleigh, Devon).
Our next meeting will be on Thursday 4th February at
2.00pm in the Tatworth Church Room when the speakers
will be John and Diana Pearce whose subject will be an
illustrated tour of Alaska and Vancouver.

The Christmas Bazaar

Lesley Frankau writes:

There was much ho, ho, ho-ing at St.Johns Annual

Christmas Bazaar in the Tatworth Memorial Hall which
took place one Saturday in late November. A stalwart
team from the church set up early on the morning
(and a couple the night before, thanks to Ken and Helen
Johnson) to ensure the hall looked festive and
welcoming for the 2pm orderly queue of village locals
who annually support the event. No Black Friday worries
here, (even on a Saturday!).
Plenty of bargains to be won or purchased (from an array
of stalls, including home-made cakes and produce, ably
run by Rosa Newman and Iris whose wares flew off the
shelves. Christine Mitchells bottle Tombola stall was
a great hit, as too were the Christmas cards and
decorations on sale, plus the candle stall and colouring
competition, courtesy of Mary Dewar, Wendy Cotton,
Pippa Price, Monica Mason, Sue Cheese and Vivienne, all
of whom lit up the room! Jewellery and other Christmas
present items looked lovely (hosted by Eileen Southall,
with glamourous assistants Marguerite and Gloria).

Margaret Bandys annual Bran tub and the beautifully

crafted log basket, made and donated by Malcolm Mason
(with logs supplied by Dave Bostock-Smith, who also
donated three bottles of whisky for the whisky draw,
assisted by Jim Tucker), attracted young and not so
young alike. No under-age participants, naturally for the
whisky!

The superb draw run by Tom Dowm, Jan Knott and

Graham Goodwill, with a myriad of wonderful prizes,
including the Christmas Hamper, won by Sheila and Jim
Tucker, (well done, we will be round shortly) was a
magnet throughout the afternoon and helped raise 400
towards the incredible overall total of 1,600 for the
ongoing work of St.Johns.

Stallholders entered into the festive spirit with their

Christmas hats, caps, wobbling snowman and, in the case
of Nan Austin, ably assisted by Hester Down, Thelma
Poole of the Wives Group, stag antlers which sagged
throughout the afternoon. I could not possibly comment
on the observations made by stallholders about this
phenomena but it certainly caused a few chuckles! We
even had our own Father Christmas, courtesy of Graham
Goodwill. Did anyone recognise him, I wonder?! Well
done to Grahams son Tom, who ran a DVD and CD stall
selling his own wares for St. Johns. A Kind and generous
gesture.
Mulled wine and mince pies were consumed in great
quantities and at one time the hall resembled the first
day of Harrods sale with items being snapped up, but
always with great courtesy and hilarity. Many thanks
to Pearl Chubb, Rachel Lambert and Jill Bishop on
refreshments. Helen and Matt Alcock, together with
Daphne Carslake ran the TCYC stall with beautifully
crafted Christmas items made by the Youth Club on sale.
Frank Long was on the door, persuading people to part
with their money, ably assisted (and blessed for their
generosity) by Rector Tim Price.

Well Done Tatworth, your wonderful support at our

events over the years in the village is much appreciated.
It is always good to have the opportunity to meet so
many friends new and old on these occasions, which
emphasises that we are all part of the same community.
Compliments of the Season to all and a Peaceful and
Happy New Year to everyone from our Church family.

FEBRUARY GARDENER

Gardening, weather conditions and preparing

for Spring
Nature as we all know does what it wants to do and
it might be worth our while looking at the potential
consequences of the recent very wet and unseasonably
warm weather arriving in the UK in strong southerly
African winds.

Botanically we have all experienced unusual or

unexpected flowering which may be late second
flowering from 2015 or too early Spring flowering which
is all very confusing for plants, gardeners and wildlife.
We have seen Daffodils (Narcissus) bulbs flowering in
December, also Anemonies and Primulas (Ranunculus
family) and many more jumping the gun and flowering a
month early in December/January. This is not a worry
unless woody shrubs and herbaceous perennials flower in
the severe frost that may well follow mild conditions
with resulting damage to the flower heads and buds.
Even very hardy woody shrub buds such as those found
on the Camellia can be badly damaged on a very cold
sunny winter morning with sudden melting of the
frosted buds. We can try protecting them with garden
fleece or bubble wrap if we are well prepared in time for
frosts!
We may not like frosts, but many plants do and nature
comes to the rescue with plant Vernalisation, the name
given to a sustained period of severe cold. Most early
vegetable biennials e.g. brassicas (cabbages, sprouts
etc.), hardy herbaceous plants and many woody
shrubs/trees should have this frozen period which used
to be normal in Winter in the UK. Also many standard
flowering plants e.g. Campanula (Bell FlowerCampanula family), Chrysanthemums (Aster - Daisy
family) and especially the fruit tree (Rose family)
require this (vernalisation) sustained cold period or
the consequences may be very delayed flowering and
fruiting till late Summer or even Autumn. This delay can
be disasterous for loss of Spring ornamental and fruit
tree flowering growers.

Ground soil condition this month

Soggy soil will soon harden but water will lie trapped
until better drainage/evaporation starts in the warmer
weather. Add organic matter e.g. compost, manure, leaf
mould and inorganic matter e.g. grit, spare
gravel, even a small gravel soakaway for large amounts
of trapped water. On a positive note again we will need
a good storage of water in the soil for those hot months

we yearn for, remembering how quickly the ground dries

up under grass lawns for example.

Pests
Our beloved gardeners friends, slugs and snails bless
them, will now be so ecstatically happy and in
March/April they will start reproducing big time from
earlier perfect soggy conditions. So be warned and
try with tough gloves to remove them yourself at night
or early morning (horrible job but better than slug
pellets that kill hedgehogs and other animals and pets!).
We will have fewer of our wonderful hedgehog friends,
blackbirds, thrushes and other ground feeders sadly
unless we all pull together and provide appropriate
conditions for them.
So while we dont all appreciate bitter cold weather
or excessive wet weather, horticulture needs it in
moderation and aquatic-moisture plants adore it, so
have a look around for some selections in the garden
centres (Forde Abbey have a good specialist aquatic
section).
I will be on a Botanical Tour in February and March so
hope to follow up with some interesting reports of plants
growing in tropical conditions.

MARCH GARDENER

March is the exciting month the beginning of

gardening year full activity - when we can hopefully get
out into the garden and get to work after a long, dark
and very wet and windy winter. The clocks go forward at
the end of this month, which is a great daylight bonus.
Let us not forget our wildlife. Can a nest box be put up
as with increasing light levels birds are now and for some
time desperately seeking a new home and those elusive
hedgehogs may be stirring so perhaps a dish of cat food
would be welcome although in the past we have had a
stream of grateful cats wandering through our garden,
but have yet to see a hedgehog!

Planning your garden. Have a think about what you

would like to see in your garden in the coming year.
Do you need to replace any plants? Would you like to see
some hanging baskets or even a completely new
flowerbed? While the days can still be dull and
miserable it is a good and enjoyable time to look ahead.
Make a list of jobs to be tackled not too many
at once or your enthusiasm will wane. Maintenance of
tools and equipment should be top of the list. Is the
lawnmower working? Do tools need to be sharpened?
Stock up on plant feeds especially liquid ericaceous
required now for Heathers, Camellias, Rhododendrons
(Azaleas), all of which should be budding and will soon
be in flower.
Tidy up the detritus and dead matter from winter.
Some pruning can start now, but check first before you
start to see what pruning regime plants require. Always
be careful before cutting into old wood. Ive seen some
good woody shrubs killed off mistakenly as old wood
(with a few exceptions) does not always re-grow.
Annual seeds can be planted from March onwards,
directly into the soil if it is soft. Prepare the soil well
and protect seedlings from the usual predators, slugs and

www.tatworthandforton.co.uk

birds. Also keep seedlings sheltered from severe storms!

Im sure we are all pleased to see the back of Hurricane
Frank! Check To do lists in publications and on the RHS
website. Early Spring brings back colour into our lives
after the grey of winter. Bulbs Narcissus, Iris, Crocus
too many to mention. Also flowering shrubs, Forsythia,
Camellia, Ribes, Ornamental Quince and Prunus blossoms all bring a warm and happy smile to our faces.
If you are itching to buy plants do shop around,
especially look on line as there are some very
competitive deals, but make it a worthwhile purchase
taking into account the cost of postage and packing.
I find a trip to a local garden centre is always a pleasure,
especially when I can enjoy a good cup of coffee when
dithering over what to buy.
