NOTE
The figures in this document illustrate the Brocade SilkWorm 12000 but also are applicable to the Brocade 24000,
48000, and DCX Director directors. Where applicable, additional illustrations are provided for individual products. The
12000, 24000, 48000, and DCX Data Center Backbone Director are referred to as the Director in this document
except where an instruction applies only to a specific product. Also, the rack mount shelf brackets used with a
particular Director may appear differently that the illustrations in this document.
CAUTION
A fully populated Director chassis can weigh up to approximately 250 lbs (113 kg) and requires a
minimum of two people and a hydraulic or assisted lift to install. Before installing, verify that the
additional weight of the chassis does not exceed the weight limits of the cabinet or unbalance the
cabinet, including when some of the cards or power supplies are partially extended from the chassis.
DANGER
To allow the quick removal of all power from the chassis, use AC power sources that are easily accessible
and located near the chassis.
ATTENTION
To ensure adequate cooling, install the chassis with the air intake (nonport) facing the cool-air aisle.
To ensure correct installation and operation:
Ensure that the space in the 19-in. (48.3 cm) EIA cabinet is 14U high, with a minimum distance of 28.25 in.
(71.76 cm) and a maximum distance of 29.88 in. (75.90 cm) between the front and back rails.
Verify that the additional weight of the chassis does not exceed the weight limits of the cabinet.
5 of 22
Plan for cable management before installing the chassis. Cables can be managed in a variety of ways, such as
by routing cables below the chassis, to either side of the chassis, through cable channels on the sides of the
cabinet, or using patch panels.
Ensure that one or two dedicated electrical branch circuits with the following characteristics are available:
- 200-240 VAC, 50-60 Hz (refer to the corresponding hardware reference manual for additional electrical
specifications)
Grounded outlets are installed by a licensed electrician and compatible with the power cords
Supply circuit, line fusing, and wire size are adequate, according to the electrical rating on the chassis
nameplate
Located close to the Director chassis and easily accessible.
ATTENTION
To maximize fault tolerance, connect each power cord to a separate power source.
Ensure that all equipment installed in the cabinet is grounded through a reliable branch circuit connection. Do
not rely on a secondary connection to a branch circuit, such as a power strip.
Ensure that the director fans have access to a total minimum airflow of 350 cubic ft (9.91 cubic meters) per
minute. Do not block intake vents - allow for 14 in (35.66 cm) clearance.
Ensure that the air temperature on the air intake side is less than 104o Fahrenheit (40o Celsius) during
operation.
Time required
Allow approximately one hour to unpack and install a Director chassis in a cabinet. This does not include the time it
takes to configure software such as setting the IP address.
Items required
The following items are required when installing the 14U Rack Mount Kit:

CAUTION
A fully populated Director chassis can weigh up to 250 lbs (113 kg) and requires a minimum of two
people to safely lift/slide it from one surface to another.
Receiving a Director
Remove the packing crate from the pallet while it is still in the shipping area, to reduce clutter at the installation site.
To prepare a 14U Director:
1. Open the latches that hold the top of the crate to the pallet.
To open a latch, pull the handle out, turn it to the left, and slide the latch open.
2. Lift the top of the crate off the pallet.
Leave the foam on top of the chassis to hold the kits in place during transportation to the installation area.
CAUTION
Do not move the chassis off the pallet until the door is removed (refer to Removing and Installing the
Chassis Door (Models Except DCX Director) on page 15.) Note that door is not installed on DCX Director
when shipped (packaged separately) and must be installed.
3. Transport the chassis on the pallet to the installation area, using a pallet jack or other assisted lift.
Doorways must be at least 36 in. (91 cm) wide so the pallet on a pallet jack can fit through it.
4. Remove the 14U Rack Mount Kit, Accessory Kit, packing foam, and antistatic plastic from the chassis (Figure 2
on page 10).
NOTE
The following figure shows the chassis bolted to the shipping pallet with brackets. The DCX Director ships on a plastic
tray and is not secured with brackets.

NOTE
On models other than DCX Director, notched ends are installed on the side of rack on exhaust air aisle. The notches
are for cable management on the Director.
To attach the shelf brackets:
1. Locate the shelf brackets in the 14U Rack Mount Kit.
2. Locate and loosen the adjusting screws on the brackets (Items A and B; see Figure 3 on page 11 for location) to
allow for adjustment to cabinet depth.

ATTENTION
Standard EIA rails have holes in sets of three; spaces between the holes are 5/8 in., 5/8 in., and 1/2 in.
(1.58 cm, 1.58 cm, 1.27 cm). If cables are to be routed down through the cable management tray, allow space below
the brackets for cable management. Cables can also be routed through the holes in the sides of the chassis.
5. Tighten the adjusting screws on the rack mount shelf brackets to a torque of 32 in.-lbs (37 cm-kgs).
6. Attach the clip or retainer nuts to the vertical rails on the exhaust aisle side of the cabinet. These clip nuts are
used for securing the cable side of the chassis to the rack rails using 10-32 x 5/8-inch screws. For models
except DCX Director place two clips on each rail. For DCX Directors, use three clips on each rail. Place the clips in
optimum locations for securing the chassis to the rails.
12 of 22
ATTENTION
When inserting screws into the chassis, use the exact screws specified in the procedure. Using longer screws might
damage the chassis.

3. Attach to the chassis using four of the 10-32 x 5/16 in. (0.794 cm) screws (Item E) per bracket.
4. Tighten the screws to a torque of 32 in.-lbs (37 cm-kgs).
5. Repeat for the other bracket.

Removing and Installing the Chassis Door (Models Except DCX Director)
Use the following steps to remove and install the chassis door from the Director chassis.
Removing Door
Remove the chassis door from the chassis before installing in the cabinet:
1. Open the door to an angle of approximately 90 degrees.
2. Support the door to prevent it from falling; then, push the spring-loaded pin on the upper hinge up and into the
notch in the hinge (see Figure 7).
Installing Door
Reinstall the door after the chassis is in place in the cabinet (see Figure 7).
1. Ensure the spring-loaded pins on both door hinges are retracted (push pins into notches).
2. Align the door hinges with the chassis portion of the hinges.
3. Release the pins by pushing the pins out of the notches.
For power-on and configuration instructions, refer to the corresponding hardware reference manual.

Removing Door
Using gentle force, pull the door straight out from chassis. Refer to Figure 8 on page 16 and Figure 9.
CAUTION
A fully populated Director chassis can weigh up to approximately 250 lbs (113 kg) and requires a
minimum of two people to safely slide it from one surface to another. Stabilize the lift and the cabinet to
prevent movement during the transfer.
Install the chassis in the cabinet using the following steps.
NOTE
Steps 4, 5, and 8 do not apply to the DCX Director. This model ships on a plastic tray and is not secured to the shipping
pallet with brackets. The DCX Director also does not use upper rack mount brackets.
