SEVERITY: Medium Operational

PRO D U CT S A FF E CT E D:

M-EOS v9.8.0, v9.8.1 and v9.8.2; v9.9.0, v9.9.1 and v9.9.2. Only M-EOS switches that support
Frame Redirection (Sphereon 4400, M4700 and M6140) and are configured in interopmode =
McDATA Fabric at M-EOS = v9.8.x OR either McDATA Fabric/OpenFabric at M-EOS = v9.9.x.
CORRECTED IN RELEASE:

The fix for this issue has been included in M-EOS v9.8.3 and v9.9.3 which are currently available
from Brocade.

BULLETIN OVERVIEW

Users cannot activate a zone set with a large number (> 4096) of total zone members after upgrading
to M-EOS v9.8.0, v9.8.1, v9.8.2, v9.9.0, v9.9.1 or v9.9.2.

Brocade produces and publishes Technical Support Bulletins to OEMs, partners and customers that have a
direct, entitled, support relationship in place with Brocade.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Zone set fails to activate successfully. This issue occurs because the firmware (see Risk Assessment
section below for firmware behavior at the various version levels) checks the zone set size and if the
zone contains more than 4096 total zone members, the managing director will receive multiple event
151 Fabric Configuration Failures from other switches in the fabric every time an attempt is made
to activate the new zone set.
RISK ASSESSMENT
This issue will occur only in fabrics with a total zone member count that exceeds 4096 members in a
specific zone set that is being activated. This zone member check that is causing the problem will
only occur in the M-EOS switches and Directors that support frame redirection (Sphereon 4400,
M4700 and M6140). The erroneous code check will not be triggered in other M-EOS switches such
as Sphereon 3xxx, 4500 and 6064. The check will only occur in switches and directors that are set to
McDATA Fabric mode (Open Fabric is not affected) in M-EOS versions v9.8.0, v9.8.1 or v9.8.2.
This check will occur for both interop modes (McDATA Fabric/OpenFabric) for switches and
directors running M-EOS v9.9.0, v9.9.1, or v9.9.2.
SYMPTO MS
Zone set will not activate when trying to enable a new or currently active zone set. The following
event will be logged in the managing director event log.
The Service-Event logs are different depending upon the managing switch firmware family on which
the Event is recorded:
Event log error message if managing switch is an Mi10k (attempts zone set activation). M-EOSn
firmware is not affected:

has the problem. In the example domain = 0x1B.

If the event is recorded by M-EOS the fourth byte is the domain ID in Hex of the switch that is
rejecting the command. In this case Domain ID = x05
09 = Invalid Data
3C =Invalid Number of Zone Members
The Event codes record the reason for the responses from the switches with the Defect that are
rejecting the SFC (Stage Fabric Configuration) command from the managing switch.

WORKAROUND
Three options:
Reduce the number of zone members in the new zoneset that is attempting to be activated to cause
the check not to exceed 4096 total members. Most sites are unable to take this action.
Downgrade to the previous version of M-EOS below v9.8.0.
Upgrade to M-EOS v9.8.3 or v9.9.3.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Defect 256930 has been fixed in M-EOS v9.8.3 and v9.9.3 releases to address this zone set activation
problem. The firmware zone size checking function call being made will allow for 4096 unique (not
total) zone members in a zone set.
