Introduc)on

MurasuAnjalisasuiteofsoftwaretoolsthathelpcreate,edit,convertandpublishTamil
contentonWindowsandMacOSXoperatingenvironments.
Muthu Nedumaran -irst developed the software in 1985, on a personal computer
running MS DOS 3.1 operating system as a hobby. The early versions of the software
had both software and hardware components. The graphics card hardware was
modi%iedtorenderTamilcharactersalongwithRomanletters.
Featuresofthesoftwarewereregularlyupdatedyearafteryear.MurasuAnjal5.0,the
!irst version to run on Microsoft Windows operating environment (Windows 3.0) was
releasedin1991.MacOSversionofMurasuAnjalwasincludedaspartoftheoperating
systembyApplein2004(MacOS10.4).
MurasuAnjalchangedtheTamilpublishinglandscapeintheregionfromthedayitwas
!irst introduced. Daily, weekly and monthly publications and printed books were
producedwithMurasuAnjal.
Version 9 of the software, which was introduced in late 1999 included support for
Unicode. It is widely believed that Murasu Anjal was the 9irst Tamil input software to
supportUnicodeatthattime.Muchofthetechnicaldesignofthesoftwareremainedthe
same from versions 5.0 till 9.7. Modern operating systems such as Windows Vista and
Mac OS X provide much better support for Indian languages. As such the old design
requiredareview.
Murasu Anjal 10, on which the MOESingapore version is based on, introduces a
completely redesigned set of components. Each of the components takes advantage of
the operating system services to bring out the best utilities for Tamil while staying
conformant to the standards for better coexistence with other languages, speci3ically
Chinese.
This release includes companion tools that will help users create Tamil content with
improved ease of use and compatibility with all the common software, speci(ically
desktopandWebapplications.
A highly sophisticated input method editor, lookup word dictionary, keyboard viewer
are just to name a few. High quality Tamil Unicode fonts, some with regular and bold
variants are included for better presentation with popular Mac OS software such as
iWorkandiLifesuites.
TheNigandufeatureintroducedinAnjal9.5hasbeenredesignedinthenewversion.It
nowincludesacompleteTamilEnglishdictionaryfromLifco.

Tamil99MOESingaporeInputMethod
Unlike previous versions of Murasu Anjal that provided keyboard drivers, Murasu Anjal (MOE
Singapore) provides an Input Method based on Text Services Framework. This ensures
compatibilitywithallUnicodesupportedapplicationsandfutureversionsofWindowsandMac
OSX.
Tamil99 (MOE Singapore) is based on the simpli/ied layout implemented based on MOEs
requirementsandspeci/ications.

KeyboardViewerandCharacterPalette
Toassistnewusers,theTamil99KeyboardViewerisprovidedsothatuserscanclickthroughthe
keystoinputtextoruseitasanonscreenreferencewhiletypingonthephysicalkeyboard.The
CharacterPaletteallowsuserstoselectTamilsymbolsandnumeralsthatarenotmappedtothe
keyboardlayout.(InMacOS,userscanpickthecharactersfromthesystemCharacterPalette).

LookupWordwithLifcoTamilEnglishDictionary
ThecompleteTamilEnglishDictionaryisbundledintoAnjal.Thiswillallowuserstolookupthe
wordsandchecktheirmeanings.

AnjalUnicodeFonts
Fifteen professionally designed Tamil Unicode fonts are included. Some of them are provided
withregularandboldvariantsforbettercontrastbetweenbodytextandheadings.Inaddition,
AnjalInaiMathiSchoolbookfontisspeci'icallyadaptedtocomplywiththewrittenformofTamil
alphabetsasapprovedbyMOE.

DocumentconverterAddInforMSOf*ice
Old documents created in legacy encoding such as TSCII, TAB or TAM can be converted to
Unicode with the converter embedded into Of)ice applications. For the )irst time, users will be
able to convert even PowerPoint and Excel documents. This addin is available only in the
MicrosoftWindowsversion.However,documentsconvertedfromtheWindowsversioncanbe
usedwithcompatibleMacOSsoftwarelikeOpenOf4ice.orgoriWorksuite.

FileConverterforHTMLandTextDocuments
Legacy documents in TXT or HTML 5iles can be converted using the 5ile converter. Users just
draganddropthese*ilesandtheconvertercreatesUnicodeversionsofthe*iles.Many*ilescan
beselectedanddroppedintotheconverterforabatchconversion.Thistooisonlyavailableon
Windows.However,theconverteddocumentscanbebroughtintoMacOSforfurtherediting.

PDFCreation
WindowsversionofAnjalincludesaPDFwriter.InMacOSX,thisisabuiltinfeature.Userscan
createPDFdocumentsbyjustprintingtoa6ile.

Anjal.NetCommunityPortal
Thisonlineportaliscreatedforuserstoexchangeviews,participateinforums,createblogsand
read regularly posted articles and guides on Murasu Anjal software. Membership is open to all
Anjalusers.

Installa'on

Prerequisites
Before installing Anjal into your computer, please ensure that you have the following
minimumrequirements:
1. AMacintoshcomputerrunningMacOSX10.5(Leopard)orlater.
a. Mac machines with Intel architecture may run 10.5 or 10.6 (Snow
Leopard)
b. MacmachineswiththeolderPowerPCarchitecturewillrun10.5bynot
10.6orlater.

2. AnactiveInternetConnection
a. Internet connection is required at the time of installation. This is to
verifyyourAnjal10serialnumber.

Start the Murasu Anjal (MOESingapore) installer either by double clicking the
downloaded"ileorfromtheappropriatelinkontheCDROMmainscreen.
YouwillnowbeabletoseethemountedfolderinFinderasshownbelow:

There are only two icons. Double clicking the book will open this manual in Preview.
DoubleclickingontheAnjaliconwillstarttheinstaller:

Enter your name, email address, Murasu Anjal 10 (MOE Singapore) product serial
number and click Continue. You will be prompted for the Administrator password.
Enterthattocompletetheinstallation.
Once the installation is complete, the installer will prompt you to initiate a logout.
Answeryestologoutofthesystemandloginbackagain.
Alltherequiredapplication1ilesarenowinstalledinyoursystem.Thenextstepisto
enabletheInputMethodandKeyboardViewer.IfyouarerunningSnowLeopard,you

To con&igure keyboard short cuts, open System Preferences from the doc and select

Note: the default short cut for input source is CommandSpace. However, since this

TheTamil99Layout
Murasu Anjal (MOESingapore) only allows Tamil input to be done using the Tamil99
layout. This layout automatically becomes active when you select the Input Method or
thekeyboard.
ThekeyarrangementsinTamil99isshowninthe3igurebelow:

1. Thevowelsarearrangedontheleftandconsonantsontheright.

2. Some punctuation keys are reassigned: example singlequote, doublequote,

semicolon, colon, forwardslash and square brackets. You may also type these
charactersfromtheiroriginallocationwhileinEnglishmode.

3. The Grantha letters are mapped to upper case letters Q, W, E, R, T and Y.

Therefore,youneedtopresstheshiftkeytoinputGranthaletters.

4. Independent vowels ( to ) are typed by pressing the respective keys in the

layout.Thesekeyswillbecomedependantvowels("#$ !"#$) whentyped
immediatelyafterabaseconsonant.

5. Togetbaseconsonants,typetherespectivekeysontheright.

6. To get compound letters ("#&), type the base consonant followed by the
respectivevowel.

Murasu Anjal 10 includes 15 Tamil typefaces that are completely Unicode compliant.
These typefaces are available on both Windows and Mac OS X platforms. This enables
userstoeasilytaketheirdocumentsandworkacrossboththeseplatforms.
Two of the typefaces include regular and bold variants. This feature allows a single
typefacewithtwodifferentweightsforconsistenttypestylesindocuments.

SchoolbookFont:Recommendedfontforteachingandlearning
AnjalInaiMathihasavariantthatisspeci2icallydesignedforprimaryschooltextusage.
The glyphs in this font, called Anjal InaiMathi Schoolbook, are designed to meet the
standardforlettershapessetbytheMinistryofEducation.

BodyTextFonts
Thescreencapturebelowshowsfontsthatarespeci3icallydesignedforbodytext.Two
of these, Anjal InaiMathi and Anjal Chittu Slant, are available in two faces: regular and
bold.Theemboldeningofthestemwidthsofthesefontsindesign,maketheboldfaces
stand out from their regular counterparts. The effect will be much better than the
defaultemboldeningdonebyWindows.

applicationthatsupportsIndicUnicode.
Atthetimethisdocumentwascreated,themostcommonof3iceapplicationsuite,Mac
Of#ice2008fromMicrosoft,doesnotfullysupportTamiUnicode.However,thepopular
suites from Apple: iLife08, iLife09, iWork08 and iWork09 handle Tamil Unicode text
