IINTRODUCTION

The equipment covered by this publication must be

selectedfor a specific application and it mustbe
installed,operated,
and maintained by qualified
personswhoare
thoroughlytrainedandwho
understand any hazards that may be involved. This
publication is written only for such qualified persons
and is not intended to be a substitute for adequate
training and experience in safety procedures for this
type of equipment.

General
The following instructions are for field assembly (erection) and installation
of S&CLine-Rupters. See Figure 1.
The S&C Line-Rupter employs an in-series circuitbreaking interrupter anda circuit-making and isolating
disconnect, makingit especiallysuited for line and cable
switching; specifically, load splitting (parallel or loop
switching), load dropping, andline and cable dropping.
Line-Rupter is capable of closing,carrying,and
interrupting load currents and parallel
loopor
currents,
as well as line- and cable-charging current.
Line-Rupters utilize the time-provenreliability of the
S&C Circuit-Switcher's brain and in-series interrupter,
combinedinacompact,economical,minimummaintenance switching package. Line-Rupter
interrupters are economically tailored for specific applications
by employing the precise number of interrupting gaps
required.
Each pole-unit of the S&C Line-Rupter includes a
brainwhichprovidesbuilt-inpositivesequence
control . . . and a fully enclosed stored-energy source
dedicated solely to operation of the interrupter which

Supersedes lnstructlon Sheet 752-500dated 4-21-86

is in the circuitat all times. Close-and-trip mechanisms

are fully enclosed and protected, too. There are no
external linkages, lever arms, cams, shunts, etc. that
must be coordinated with
a disconnect blade to accomplish circuit interruption. Positively sequenced operation is assured regardlessof severe weather conditions
such as high winds, rain, sleet, orsnow.
Line-Rupters can be manuallyoperated by means of
an S&C Manual Geared Operating Handle.Alternately,
for remote supervisory control, power operation can
be provided with an S&C Switch Operator-Type LS-2.
Formanuallyoperated
Line-Rupters, the degree of
simultaneity of opening and closing of the three poleunits depends on the proper installation and adjustment of the operating mechanism-as well as on the
speed of cranking at the operating handle-and must
be considered in establishing ground-relay settings.

Mounting of Line-Rupters
S&C Line-Rupters are intended for upright mounting
on S&C Mounting Pedestals or, alternately, for upright
mounting on the user's steel pedestals or supporting
structures which must meet specific static deflection
limits shown in an S&C data sheet.
The weight of the bus plus any associated ice load
exerts a vertical force on upright-mounted Line-Rupter
terminalpads. This vertical force mustnotexceed
400 pounds on either terminal pad.

Seismic Withstand Capability

S&C Line-Rupters, when installed with the recommended S&C Mounting Pedestals and anchorbolts, are
capable of withstanding seismic loading of 0.2 ground

STARTING INSTALLATION

Checking the Shipment

Gas-Pressure Indicator

An S&C erection drawing will be found in a waterresistant envelope attached to the interrupter
container on one of the threeLine-Rupter pole-units. Study
the erection drawing carefully and check the bill of
material to be sureall parts areat hand.
TheLine-Ruptershipmentshouldincludethe
following items, as shown in Figure 2:
1. Three pole-units, each mounted on a skid, with the
live partsattacheddirectlytotheinsulatormounting flanges;
2. Insulators, shippedin separate crates;
3. Miscellaneousoperating-mechanismcomponents
including a temporary adapter for hand operation
of the individual pole-units;
pipe;
4. Interphase and vertical operating
5. An S&C ManualGearedOperatingHandle
(if
specified) or an S&C Switch 0perator"Type LS-2
(if specified, in place of a manual geared operating
handle);
6. S&C Mounting Pedestals(if specified).

Line-Rupters have sealed interrupters containing gas

under pressure. Loss of gas pressure may result in
improperinterruptingaction.
Low gas pressure is
signaled by a red target in the gas-pressurc indicator
at the terminal end of each interrupter. See Figure 2.
A graytarget indicates normal pressure.

Interrupter Target
Line-Rupters are usually shipped with the interrupters
in the open position. Therefore, the interrupter target,
located onthe side of each brain housing (see
Figure S),
will appear yellow. During the step-by-step instructions
which follow, the disconnect blades will be moved to
the fully open position. This will close the interrupter
and charge and latch the stored-energy sourcewithin
the brain, and the target
will appear gray (normal).

Whenin service, Line-Rupter interrupters should

never be open when the blades are in the closed
position. To close theinterrupters, Line-Rupter
must be completely opened and then reclosed.

DO NOT INTERMIX COMPONENTS

FROM DIFFERENT INSTALLATIONS
S&C maintainsanhistorical
record-by serial
number-ofevery
Line-Rupterproduced.This
record lists information pertinent to each installation, such as application, date of shipment, and
anyserviceperformed
by S&C factory service
specialists. This record is invaluable when questions
arise relative to modifkations or replacements. It
is important, therefore, that the various
components belonging to a specific Line-Rupter installation not be intermixed with components belonging
to a different installation.
For thisreason,each
Line-Rupter is serially
numbered. This serial number is stamped on the
nameplate affixed to eachindividual pole-unit base
and also on the nameplate affixed to the manual
geared operating handle (orto theswitch operator
if the Line-Rupter is power operated).
To facilitate identification during erection, the
serialnumber,thesales-ordernumber,andthe
erection-drawing (ED) number are marked on the
top faceof each Line-Rupterpole-unit base; on each
pole-unit shipping crate or skid; and on all crates,
boxes,andbundlesfortheothercomponents
associated withthe installation.
PleasecompleteandmailtheLine-Rupter

step 1
Make sure that each shipping skid rests firmly and is
reasonably level. If the ground is uneven, shoring under
the skids is necessary.
Carefully remove the outer crates (if provided), but
leave the skids attached to the pole-unit bases. See
Figure 2. Remove any live-part blocking members and
straps.
Inspect for any obvious shipping damage before
continuing installation.

Do not remove the interrupter containers until the

installation has been completed.

PIERCING SET SCREWS

To assure the integrity of the operating mechanism,
it is imperative that careful attention be given to
the correct installation of the piercing set screws
provided on operating-pipe couplings and pipe
clamps. Before installing operating pipe in any
coupling or clamp, make certain that the cutting
tip of the piercing set screw does not protrude
through the body of the coupling or clamp. Tighten
each piercing set screw as directed in the step-bystep instructions that follow, but in each case, only
after the associated clamp bolts have been torqued
to final tightness.

Repeat the folkming Steps 2 through 20 for each of

the Line-Rupter pole-units.
Step 2
Attach the temporary hand-operation adapter, which
is provided, to the pole-unit drive lever, as shown in
Figure 3.

factory-adjusted to provide the sequence control
necessary to ensure positive latching of the storedenergy source within the brain. To maintain this
essential relationship during removal and later
reassembly of live parts, a brain adjustment-holding
device is provided. See Figure 5.
The adjustment-holding device consists of a stop
bushing, factory-set in the bracket attached to the
underside of the brain, plus a tab on the brain operating
shaft. When the pole-unit is operated to the fully open
position of the disconnect blade, the tab rotates to
within r/16 inch of the stop bushing. A %-13X23/4
positioning bolt with flat washer and nut is furnished
(in a cloth bag attached to the operating-shaft tab)
for insertion through the tab and the stop bushing.
Install the positioning bolt as follows:
(a) With the temporary hand-operation adapter,
operate the pole-unit to place the disconnect blade
in the fully open position, with the base-mounted
pole-unit drive lever lying against its stop in a
positive-toggle condition. See Figure 4. This will
close the interrupter and charge and latch the
stored-energy source within the brain.
(b) Loosen the bolts fastening the brain mounting flange
to the rotating-insulator support. Then insert the
%-13X2% positioning bolt through the tab and
the stop bushing and secure it with the flat washer
and nut. Torque the nut tightly, such that the two
mating surfaces are drawn together. See Figure 5.
Step 4
Remove the brain-and-interrupter assembly from the
insulator-mounting supports, following the procedure
described below.
(a Attach lifting slings in the manner shown in
Figure 6. Be sure that the slings do not interfere
with the interrupter target on the side of the brain,
the gas-pressure indicator, or the pressure-relief
device.
@ Remove the bolts fastening the brain to the rotatinginsulator support and the bolts fastening the
interrupter to the rear insulator support. Discard
these bolts.
(c) Hoist the brain-and-interrupter assembly and set
it aside on a clean surface.

Step 5
Unbolt and remove the jaw-contact assembly and
terminal adapter, as a unit, from the front insulator
support. See Figure 4.
Step 6
Assemble the insulator stacks (with rain shields, where
applicable) directly on their insulator supports, using
the galvanized hardware specified in Figure 7. Note that
the supports for the stationary insulator stacks each
have eight mounting holes. Be sure to orient these stacks
correctly so that the holes in the insulator caps are
positioned as shown in Figure 7.

Step 7
Check the rotating insulator stack for eccentricity as
follows:
(a) Locate the centerpoint of each insulator stack by
accurately drawing, on the top of the insulator cap,
temporary lines which bisect and connect opposite
bolt holes. See Figure 7.
(b) Stretch a cord taut across the top of the insulator
caps so that it crosses the centerpoint on the
rotating insulator stack. (At this tune the cord need
not cross the centerpoint of the front and rear
insulator caps.)
(c) Make a mark on the cord at the point where it
crosses the centerpoint of the rotating insulator
stack.

(d) Operate the temporary hand-operation adapter

and check to see that the mark on the cord remains
within $6 inch of the centerpoint of the rotating
insulator cap as the insulator stack turns. Any
eccentricity in excess of this value must be corrected
by placing shims between the insulator stack and
its support. See Figure 7. Shimming material is
inejuded with the insulator hardware in a cloth sack
attached to the pole-unit base.

insulator stack with respect to the base will be within
acceptable limits.
Step 8
The rear insulator stack should be checked for
alignment with the rotating insulator stack as follows:
(a) Stand behind the rear insulator stack and sight
down the length of the pole-unit base. The rear
insulator stack should not be canted. It should be
perpendicular to the base and in alignment with
the rotating insulator stack.
(b) Measure the centerline distance across the top from
the centerpoint of the rotating insulator stack to
the centerpoint of the rear insulator stack. This
measurement must be within l/s inch of the dimension shown on the erection drawing. See Figure 7.

(a) Loosen the four locking nuts and adjust the leveling
screws located under the stationary insulator
support. See Figure 7. (The leveling screws are
threaded into the insulator-support flange.) To
avoid changing the effective height of the insulator
stack, do not use more than three of thefour leveling

screws fin- this adjustment.

(b) Retighten the four locking nuts.
Step 10
Check the alignment of the front insulator stack by
means of a cord stretched taut across the top of the
insulator stacks. The cord should cross the centerpoints
of all three insulator stacks, and the front insulator
stack should not be canted. If adjustment of the front
insulator stack is necessary, follow the procedure
described in Step 9.

Step 9
Adjust for the necessary centerline distance and the
stack alignment, as described in Step 8, as follows:

step11
Mount the brain-and-interrupter assembly as follows:
(a) So that the brain may be attached in its proper
relationship to the rotating insulator stack, place
the base-mounted operating mechanism in the
disconnect-blade-opened position with the poleunit drive lever against its stop bolt (rotating
insulator rotated counterclockwise as viewed from
the top). Make sure that the drive lever is held in

See Figure 8. Be sure to place the brain-andinterrupter assembly on the same pole-unit from
which it was removed.
(c) Install the cap screws (with lo&washers) finger
tight at both ends of the brain-and-interrupter
assembly. See Figure 8. Make sure that alignment
is such that the cap screws enter freely. If necessary,
reposition the rear stationary insulator stack using
the leveling screws. Also, if necessary, loosen the
cap screws at the rotating-insulator support. Then,
with the pole-unit drive lever against its stop bolt
as described in (a) above, torque to final tightness,

this position during the remainder of this step.

(b) Lift the brain-and-interrupter assembly into
position on its respective insulator stacks (brain
attaches to rotating insulator), using the same
handling care that was cautioned for its removal.

to the pole-unit base and unbolt the base from the skid.
Raise the pole-unit to its mounting position as shown
on the erection drawing. Make sure that the rigging
does not stress the interrupter or the brain. Furthermore, extreme care should be exercised to prevent the
lifting slings or fall lines from interfering with the
interrupter target, the gas-pressure indicator, or the
pressure-relief device during erection, and to prevent
contact with other objects during lifting.

Step 13
Mount the jaw-contact assembly and terminal adapter
as a unit on the front insulator stack using the
galvanized hardware specified in Figure 8. Align the
jaw-contact assembly with the blade by shifting the
terminal adapter as required. See Figure 8. (Optimum
alignment of the jaw-contact assembly with the blade
may require adjustment of the front-insulator-support
leveling screws. This final adjustment should be made
only after the pole-unit has been mounted in place and
bolted to the pedestals or structure.)

step 15
Bolt the Line-Rupter pole-unit in place using %-inch
galvanized bolts, flat washers, lo&washers, and nuts
(furnished only if so specified on order). See Figure 9.
The pole-unit base should be shimmed as required if
the mounting surface is sufficiently irregular to distort
the base.

Step 14
With the temporary hand-operation adapter, operate
the pole-unit to the closed position. Attach lifting slings

contact assembly. As the Line-Rupter blade is closed,
the circuit-closing tongue contact should engage each
of the circuit-closing jaw contacts with equal pressure
and the current-carrying tongue contacts should enter
the current-carrying jaw contacts with equal clearance
on each side. The silver-surfaced area of the currentcarrying tongue contacts should center laterally with
the silver-surfaced current-carrying jaw contacts, and
the blade should rotate with slight pressure against
the blade bumper stop and come to rest either on the
stop or slightly above it. See Figure 10.
If adjustment of the position of the jaw-contact
assembly is necessary to obtain the described alignment,
the insulator mounting-flange bolts should be loosened
and the insulator shifted as required. It may also be
necessary to adjust the front-insulator-support leveling
screws.
To maintain the correct effective height of each
individual insulator stack, it is important that only three
of the four leveling screws on any one insulator support
be adjusted. One leveling screw should always remain
in its original (factory-set) position to avoid changing
the effective height of the insulator. See Figure 7.
step 17
With the temporary hand-operation adapter, operate
the Line-Rupter pole-unit to the fully open position of
the disconnect blade. In this position, the blade crank-

arm at the top of the brain should rest against its open
stop, and the pole-unit drive lever should rest against
its stop bolt, in a positive-toggle condition. See Figure 11. Both stops have been carefully adjusted at the
factory to provide the travel necessary to achieve full
closure of the interrupter and positive latching of the
stored-energy source within the brain. Do not attempt

to adjust these stops.

In the event that either one or the other of the above
stop positions is not attained, readjust as follows:
(a) Loosen the four cap screws fastening the brain to
the rotating insulator.
(b) Install the %-13X2% positioning bolt, flat
washer, and nut in the adjustment-holding device
under the brain, as shown in Figure 5. Tighten the
nut securely so that the two mating surfaces are
drawn together.
(c) While holding the pole-unit drive lever firmly
against its stop bolt, as shown in Figure 4, securely
tighten the cap screws fastening the brain to the
rotating insulator.
(d) Remove the positioning bolt installed in (b) above.
Step 18
With the temporary hand-operation adapter, operate
the pole-unit to the fully closed position of the
disconnect blade and observe the blade crank-arm at
the top of the brain.

ASSEMBLY OF INDIVIDUAL POLE-UNiTS - Continued

Although it is desirable that the blade crank-arm rest
against its closed stop when the disconnect blade is
in the fully closed position, a gap not greater than
l/32 inch can be tolerated in the closed position only.
step 19
Check the Line-Rupter pole-unit for adequate penetration of the blade into the jaw contact during completion
of the closing stroke. See Figure 10. The blade should
exert a slight pressure against the blade bumper stop
before the start of the wiping in rotation. After the
current-carrying tongue contacts are completely
rotated into the jaw contacts, the blade pressure against
the bumper stop will tend to be relaxed, and a %-inch
maximum gap is permissible between the blade and
the blade bumper stop.
Should a blade-penetration adjustment be required,
proceed as follows:
(a) With the blade in a partially opened position, loosen
the rotating-yoke lock nut. See Figure 11.
@) Remove one of the cotter pins from the rotatingyoke coupling pin-then remove the coupling pin
itself.
(c) Turn the rotating yoke in or out on its threaded
stud to decrease or increase blade penetration.
Half-turn adjustment increments are suggested
between tryouts.
(d) Replace the rotating-yoke coupling pin and, if no
further adjustment is required, also replace the
cotter pin.
(e) Before tightening the rotating-yoke lock nut,
observe the action of the ball joint during opening
and closing operations. Note that the window of
the ball-joint socket should permit the socket to
roll freely with the motion of the blade without
binding against the ball-joint shaft.
Then, with the blade in the fully closed position,
and while holding the ball-joint socket so that the
edge of its window nearest the interrupter target
is close to the ball-joint shaft, tighten the rotatingyoke lock nut.

Step 20
After the pole-unit has been checked and adjusted as
described above, place the disconnect blade in the open
position (make sure that the pole-unit drive lever is
against its stop, in a positive-toggle condition). Then
remove the temporary hand-operation adapter.
step 21
If the outboard bearing assembly is furnished for
separate mounting, install it on the structure in the
position shown on the erection drawing.

step 22
Note: The base-mounted open stopbolt for each poleunit drive lever is factory-adjusted to achieve the travel
(and positive-toggle condition)necessary toensure
positive latching of the stored-energy source
within the
brain. Do not change this stop adjustment.
Install the interphase shaftas follows:
(a) Remove the clampsfrom the interphase-shaftdrive
lever and from the three pole-unit drive levers. See
Figure 12 for identification.
(b) Place the interphase shaft in the saddles of the
three pole-unit drive levers (positioned as shown
on the erection drawing), but do not attach the
clamps at this time.
(c) Place the interphase-shaft drive lever against the
interphase shaft. Mark the lever position on the
shaft. See Figure 12 (top).Rotatetheoutboard

into a position in which the clamp can be easily
reattached. Lift the interphase shaft of
out
the poleunitsaddlesand
place it in thesaddle of the
interphase-shaft drive lever-at the previously
marked position. See Figure 12 (center). Attach the

interphase-shaft drive lever clampand securely

tighten the clamp bolts equally so that the clamp
pulls down evenly. Then tighten the
clamps piercing
set screw, piercing the pipe, and continue turning
until a firm resistance is felt. Again rotatethe
outboard bearing and, at the same time, lift the
interphase shaftback into the saddlesof the three
pole-unit drive levers. In that position, tightenin the mannerdescribed above-the now accessible
piercing set screwin the intephase-shaftdrive lever.
(d) Make sure that all three pole-unit drive levers are
against their base-mounted stops (each pole-unit
drive linkage is then in a positive-toggle condition).
Also make sure that the outboard bearing lever
is in the switch-open position, with the stop bolt
setforapproximately
3 degrees of over-center
travel-to provide positive toggle at this point as
well. Then reinstall the clamps on the three poleunit drive levers. Tighten the clamp bolts equally
so that theclamps pull down evenly. See Figure 12

INSTALLING THE OPERATOR

Step 23
Attach a universal coupling to the hex shaft extending
below the outboard bearing assembly.
Note: If more than one section of vertical pipe is
required, the upper section(s) with associated coupling(s), guide bearing(s), and thrust bearing(s) should
be installed first, in accordance with the directions
shown on the erection drawing.
If an S&C Switch Operator-Type LS-2 is to be used,
install it as directed in S&C Instruction
Sheet 753-500, furnished with the switch operator.
If an S&C Manual Geared Operating Handle is to
be used, install it as directed in S&C Instruction
Sheet 719530, furnished with the operating handle.

Step 24
Make certain that all coupling clamp bolts for the
vertical operating pipe are securely tightened. Then
tighten the piercing set screws for the vertical
operating-pipe couplings and for the manual geared
operating handle, piercing the pipe, and continue
turning until a firm resistance is felt.
Step 26
Attach one end of the grounding strap to the lowest
vertical operating-pipe section with the U-bolt connector furnished. Then connect the other end of the
grounding strap to a suitable earth ground. (S&C
Mounting Pedestals include, for this purpose, a tab
welded to the pedestal adjacent to the handle location,
and a separate grounding connection near the base
of the pedestal for the users earth ground.)

FINAL CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS

Step 26
Using the manual geared operating handle (or the
manual operating handle on the switch operator, as
appropriate), open and close the Line-Rupter to check
the manual three-pole group operation. Make sure that
the following conditions exist:
l During the opening sequence, the interrupter target
on the side of each brain vhanges from gray to yellow
when the interrupter opens, then back to gray,
indicating the normally closed position of the
interrupter. In addition, the interrupter targets
remain gray when the Line-Rupter is closed,
indicating that the interrupters are closed.
l With Line-Rupters disconnect blades in the fully
closed position, verify that the outboard-bearing lever
is against its corresponding stop. Reset the stop if
necessary.
l While it is not critical, the normal blade opening is
90 degrees. It may be desirable from an appearance
standpoint, however, for all three pole-unit blades

I
to achieve an equal stance when fully open. If, for
this reason, adjustment is required, loosen the balljoint-shaft locking nut. Turn the shaft (which is an
eccentric) to achieve a satisfactory blade position.
See Figure 11. Retighten the locking nut. Note that
it is not necessary to loosen the socket-head screw
(in the blade crank-arm) to make the above
adjustment. It is not a lock screw.
Repositioning the ball-joint shaft will affect the
depth of blade penetration into the jaw contact
during completion of the closing stroke. The
difference in penetration will range from very slight
(at lower voltage ratings) to significant (at the higher
voltage ratings).
If the adjustment described above is performed,
recheck for proper blade penetration and readjust
if necessary (as in Step 19).

lies against its stop
bolt in a positive-toggle condition,
and the blade crank-arm at the top of each brain
makes contact with its stop. See Step 11. If this is
not the case, it will be necessary to isolate the poleunit(s) affected by loosening the clamp whichfastens
the pole-unit drivelever to the interphase shaft.
Then,
for each affected pole-unit, proceedas follows:
(a) Loosen the four bolts fastening the brain to the
rotating insulator stack.
(b) Insert the %"-13X2%" positioning bolt through
thetabandthestop
bushing at thebrain
mounting flangeand fasten securely,as described
in Step 3.
(c) Place the pole-unit drivelever against its stop bolt
and tighten the clamp at the interphase shaft.
Then tightenthe four bolts which fasten
the brain
to the rotating insulator stack.
(d) Remove the positioning bolt installed
in (b) above.
If the above conditionsarenotmet,contactthe
nearest S&C Sales Office for corrective instructions.
Step 27
When operatiov is satisfactory, tightenthe piercing set
screws at all three pole-unit drive levers, piercing the
pipe, and continue turning until a firm resistance is
felt.
Then verify that the clamp bolts and piercing set
screws at all locations are fully tightened.
Step 28
Crank the Line-Rupter to its fully open position and
then to its fully closed position. In each position, set
the corresponding "OPEN" and "CLOSED" position
indicators at the output shaft of the manual geared
operating handle (or at the output shaftof the switch
operator).
Step 29
If the S&C ManualGearedOperatingHandle
is
furnishedwithanauxiliaryswitch,catalognumber
suffix "-Q" or "-W," it will bemountedinside
the
operating-handle enclosure, alongwith a terminal
block
for user's connections. See Figure 13. Each auxiliaryswitch contact is operated by a cam-actuated roller.
A contact is closed if its roller is disengaged from a
cam and, conversely, a contact is open if its roller is
engaged by a cam. The cams
are individually adjustable
in 4.5-degree increments. Adjustment of the cams is
accomplished as follows:
(a) Raise (or lower) the cam toward its adjacent spring
until the cam is separated from the teeth of the
inner gear. See Figure 14.

I
(b) Rotate the cam to advance or retard engagement
with its roller.
(c) Lower (or raise) the
cam makingsure that the teeth
are in mesh with the inner gear.
Step 30
Connect high-voltage conductors to their
Line-Rupter terminal pads.

Conductors must be de-energized and grounded in

accordancewithstandardsystemoperating
practice.
