Where we Think, Learn, Achieve, & Care

April 2010

ierantoni’s Place

Welcome Back!
I hope your family had a wonderful Spring Break. We are back in session and ready to finish the year out
strong. Here are a couple of “Spring Thoughts” for you to consider.

Gifted and Talented Identification

We are starting the process of evaluating students to see if they can be identified as academically Gifted
and Talented. There are three possible ways (paths) your child could be considered for a Gifted and
Talented evaluation:
Path 1: Using an assessment all students take twice a year called the Measures of Academic Progress
(MAP). Teachers are looking for students who are in the 98 percentile in two subject areas. Those
students are automatically referred through our Building Intervention Team (BIT) for an intelligence test
to see if they qualify. Parents will be invited to be active participants in this process.
Path 2: Those who do not meet the Path 1 initial qualification, but the classroom teacher feels they may
be gifted, are referred to the BIT for consideration. The BIT will review each student and decide whether
or not to make a referral for evaluation. If there is a decision to move forward, the student will be given
an academic test to see if he/she qualifies. Just like in Path 1, parents will play an active role in this path.
Path 3: Parents who would like to have their child considered will follow the same process as in Path 2. I
encourage any parent who would like to pursue this to visit with their child’s current classroom teacher to
start the process.
Since this is the first year, we anticipate this process to be a little slow as we get each step down. We
thank you in advance for your patience.

Parent Input on Student Placement

Can you believe that there are only eight weeks left in the school year? If you thought the beginning of the
year went fast, wait until the end starts to wind down. I am already receiving letters from parents about
student placement for next year. With the addition of Gifted and Talented Identification for the 2010-
2011 school year, student placement becomes a little more complicated. If you are considering making a
suggestion for placement, please keep the following in mind:
• Every classroom in each grade level offers the same exposure to the curriculum.
• When classroom assignments are made for the following year, it involves a time intensive process to
make sure students are considered individually for how they will succeed based on teaching style, learning
style, interaction with peers in the classroom, student strengths, and teacher strengths.
• We cannot honor more than one request per student.
• Parent input is one determining factor and not the determining factor in placement. While we work hard
to honor requests, it does not always happen. Teachers, along with myself, take the above listed factors
into account when it comes to placing all students in classrooms.
• Parent input needs to be turned in to the office in writing by the end of the school day on May 7, 2010.
Any requests received after that date, including requests made once the class lists have been posted, will
not be honored.
