Resident enhancing
the environment

Shawnee defeats Lenape, 68-56

Driven by love of nature, Kevin Sparkman

launches free Jersey-Friendly Yards website
to educate on healthy landscaping choices
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Society has grown to place a
great deal of emphasis on lawns
as symbols of success and pride.
Through his years serving on
the Pinelands Preservation Alliance board of trustees, Kevin
Sparkman noticed an alarming
number of property owners who
were not aware of their regular
landscaping practices potentially
harming lakes, rivers and bays.
An appreciation for the incredible natural resources that
surround us in the Medford area
is very much a part of my DNA,
Sparkman said.
After growing up in Medford
Lakes, Sparkman moved to the
Tamarac Lakes section of Medford for 20 years, and along with
being a member of the PPA, he
has spent time as a member of
the Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife
Refuge and Medfords Environmental and Open Space Commission.
These experiences have laid
the foundation for Sparkmans
great appreciation of the unique
ecosystem the Pinelands offer.

The 1980 Shawnee High School

graduate has also worked on the
Medford Lakes Committee for
many years and has been vocal
about encouraging neighbors to
be very careful about their fertilizer use.
As the cofounder of Fusionspark Media Inc., he has focused
much of his web producing on environmental and conservation related issues.
Having worked extensively
with the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection in the
past, Sparkman grew familiar
with a project called FloridaYards.org and thought it would be
beneficial to replicate the idea
here in New Jersey. He worked
closely with Barnegat Bay Partnership and the Ocean County
Soil Conservation District to create the content plan for the new
website and the structure, architecture and design.
The goal of the project was to
help property owners learn about
landscaping techniques to minimize the harm by changing their
practices to reduce lawn areas,

No. 21 Pat Kernan looks to set up and execute the set signaled in by head coach Joe Kessler. After
getting off to a slow start, Shawnee High School came roaring back to take down its rival at home
last week. The 68-56 victory over Lenape High School improved the Renegades overall record to
12-7. Dean Noll led the way for Shawnee in scoring, pouring in 22 points.

Writer shares love story
with YouTube proposal
Hey guys,
My wife and I just moved to
Medford at the end of January.
We met roughly three years ago.
We had both just moved to
Philadelphia. She was from New
Jersey originally, and I was from
Montreal, Canada.
We met online, since neither of
us knew many people in the city,
and we agreed to have our first
date at a small bar in Manayunk.
She was a little nervous about
meeting a strange man from an
online dating website, so she
thought she'd be prudent and
bring her pepper spray. She
grabbed it and tossed it into her
purse. Little did she know, the bottle had leaked a little bit and some
had gotten onto her hand. Just before she left the house, she

reached up and touched her own

eye!
BURN! Her and her roommates
spent the next 30 minutes frantically trying to figure out the best
way to stop the burning, fix the
makeup and then make sure it
didn't look like she had just spent
the last 30 minutes in tears!
Thank you internet! It was October and a little chilly out, so when
she showed up, her cheeks were
flush and I was none the wiser.
We hit it off right away. I knew
she was going to be the woman I
married after about a month (it
took her a bit longer). And before
long,
this
happened:

Township may decorate water tower

By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
At a January meeting, Medford
Town Council approved a bid
from a company to paint the
towns water tower white.
This subject arose again earlier this month and has become a
topic of discussion among the
group.
The engineer of the company
awarded the project notified
council there would be discretionary money left based on how
much the project cost and how
much the township funded. He
asked the township if it would be
interested in having something
painted on the water tower to
identify that it is in Medford.
This project would cost up to
$6,000 but it would be covered by
funds the township has already
allocated.
Township manager Kathy
Berger approached council with
three options having the township logo painted on the tower,

140 Mt. Holly Bypass, Unit 5

Lumberton, NJ 08048
609-267-1555 bcendoscopycenter.com

having Medford painted on it or

both. She also said most of Medfords neighboring towns have
done similar projects.
I dont know, six grand?
Maybe if it was a thousand
bucks,
Councilman
Frank
Czekay said. Im just not a fan of
spending money on stuff like
that. I know where I live.
Czekay compared it to having
your name tattooed on yourself.
However, Councilman Bradley
Denn disagreed, arguing it would
be beneficial to the Medford Business Association and good advertising for Main Street.
I dont see it as a negative,
Denn said.
Denn felt that since it would be
getting painted anyway, this
would be an ideal time to do this
seeing it would likely not be done
at any other time down the road.
Czekay agreed with this take
but didnt feel it would be worth
$6,000.
Mayor Jeffrey Beenstock said
this would not be a frequent proj-

ect it would have to constantly

shell out money for. After the initial painting it would not likely
need to be redone for another 15
years or so.
Councilman Christopher Buoni
led the charge on bargaining with
the engineer by suggesting the
idea of talking him down with the
proposal of a smaller painting on
the tower instead of the name accompanied by the logo.
Berger entertained the idea
and stated she would report back
with an exact price.

in our opinion

Welcome home, Chris Christie!

With bid for presidency done, our governor can now just be our governor

dreams are no longer in the
head of our Gov. Christie. Last
week, following a disappointing sixthplace finish in the New Hampshire primary, Christie did what many thought
was inevitable for quite awhile now
he suspended his bid for the presidency.
Four years ago, when Christie made
it official that he would not seek the Republican nomination in the 2012 election opposite President Obama, it
seemed as though our governor would,
at the very least, be a leading candidate
in 2016. But following the Bridgegate
scandal and fights over the states pension, voters soured on him.
The surprising rise of Donald
Trump, and others, was the final blow

to Christies presidential aspirations.

He performed poorly in the Iowa
caucuses, which wasnt unexpected,
but all along, he was banking his campaign on success in New Hampshire.
When he finished with just 7 percent of
the vote last week, good for sixth best
among Republicans, the final nail was
hammered in his coffin.
Now, Christie returns to New Jersey
to assume his full-time duties of gover-

nor. That will be good for us or will

it?
Christie will serve out the remaining two years of his second term as a
lameduck governor. Between now and
2017, with no further political ascension in sight, he will be forced to deal
with a Legislature that has its sights
set on policies that will reach far beyond his term in office.
How much Christie will be able to
accomplish in the remainder of his
term, and just how much influence he
can exert, is questionable, at best.
Christie went for it all, and came up
short. Now, hes coming back home to
pick up the pieces.
Heres to hoping hell be more humble in the coming years and think of
New Jersey first.

Mayor talks taking the helm, budget plans

Jeffrey Beenstock will serve as face of the council in Medford for 2016
I am the mayor of Medford for 2016.
Under our form of government, Medford
has a council and a manager. The manager
runs the township on a day-to-day basis.
The council makes policy decisions.
The mayor and deputy mayor are appointed by council every year at councils
reorganization meeting in the beginning of
January. It has been the custom in Medford
for the mayor to change every year and rotate among the members of council. This is
done to emphasize that each member of
council has one vote and is equal in stature
and power.
However, the mayor is the face of the
council for the year. He or she chairs the
meetings of council, is asked to make public appearances on behalf of the township
and often is called upon by residents who
have a complaint or wish to discuss a matter relating to township business.

Because I am a
new mayor and this
is my first column, I
want to introduce
myself. I have lived
in Medford with my
family for more
than 16 years. I am a
real estate attorney
and a partner in a
Philadelphia-based
law firm. I have
been
active
in
MYAA as a coach
and in my homeJeffrey
owners
association. In 2011, I parBeenstock
ticipated in the
MAYORS MESSAGE
Blue Ribbon Committee that evaluated the Medford Crossings project for the

township. I was appointed to council in December 2011 after a resignation and elected
to complete the unexpired term in November 2012. In November 2013, I was elected to
a four-year term on council. Last year, I
served as deputy mayor.
In January 2012, all five council members were either newly elected or newly appointed. We inherited difficult financial
circumstances and have accomplished
much in the past four years. The financial
well being of the township was our focus
for most of that time. With the help of the
staff and the support of the community, we
are in a much better place financially. We
will soon turn to the annual budget for
2016, and do so without the concern or anxiety that we faced in our early years.
However, in my view, the process to

use fertilizers correctly, if at all,

and to use native plants and
planted beds in place of lawn
areas.
Many of New Jersey's rivers
and bays are considered impaired, meaning not fishable or
swimmable, because of excess
pollution flowing into them from
surrounding communities and
urban areas. The sources of pollution are numerous and include
fertilizers and pesticides that flow
off residential and commercial
landscapes into storm drains during rainstorms or other weather
events. The polluted storm water
moves through storm drains and,
in most cases, directly into a
water body.
Theres simply no reason that
a homeowners or business
owners landscape should contribute to pollution to our lakes,
rivers and bays that we use for
recreation, fishing and as water
sources for drinking water,
Sparkman said. Simple steps
and changes in behavior can
greatly reduce the amount of pollution.
The site places a specific emphasis on showing people how
they can reduce their lawn areas

Special to The Sun

JerseyYards.org is a new interactive website, part of the JerseyFriendly Yards campaign, that provides practical ways for property
owners to reduce the negative impacts of storm water runoff on waterways through the design and creation of environmentally-friendly
lawns and gardens.
or no fertilizer.
According to Sparkman, simply replacing lawn with natives
can greatly reduce the need for
fertilizers while also providing
food and habitat for beneficial insects, birds and other wildlife.
The featured tool the site
brings to its users is the interactive yard. BBP was responsible
for gathering most of the content
from a landscape architect at Rutgers University to define how the
interactive yard would be designed.
It was very much a team effort
to produce the project, Sparkman said.
The Interactive Yard is a tool
that helps users understand the
basic concepts of taking a lawndominated property and turning
it into a low-impact landscape by
replacing lawn with beds planted
with native plants, adding a rain

garden, removing invasive plants

and adding plants that attract pollinators.
In New Jersey, you cannot
apply fertilizer after Nov. 15 and
before March 1 in any calendar
year, so the site is in its off-season.
However, it is in the midst of reviewing consumer feedback to
better the product any way possible, as planting season quickly approaches.
I believe that most people
want to do the right thing. However, too few people consider their
individual actions regarding
their landscaping and the potential negative impact on the environment, Sparkman said.
Build your own free interactive
lawn and learn more about how
you can contribute to the prevention of water pollution by making
your yard eco-friendly at www.jerseyyards.org.
