Dear friends! Today we have an unusual lesson. The Topic of the lesson is " The system of
education in Great Britain and Ukraine. The lesson will be held in the form of thematic
discussion.
2. The motto of our lesson is "The more we study, the more we know". ( 2)

3. Here are some proverbs about school and education. ( 3) Could you match them:
"Live and learn"

"It's never late to learn"

Diligence is the mother of success
"To know everything is to know nothing"
4. Let's start to speak about education in Great Britain and in Ukraine. You try to find some
differences between the system of education in these counties.
Education in Great Britain and Ukraine is compulsory and free for all children between the
ages of 5 and 16 ( 4)
Many British children attend a nursery school from the age of 3, but it is not compulsory. In
nursery schools they learn some elementary things such as numbers, colours, and letters. Apart
from that, babies play, have lunch and sleep there. ( 5)
Nursery schools or kindergartens ( 6)

Most parents take their children to nursery schools or kindergartens at the age of three.

The children usually spend all day long there.

At the age of 4-5 they are taught to count, read and write the letters. They also have
the lessons of Drawing and Handicrafts. Sometimes they learn English too.

Pre-school education is not compulsory.

Primary schools ( 7)
Primary education lasts for 6 years. It is divided into two periods: infant schools (pupils from 5 to
7 years old) and junior schools (pupils from 7 to 11 years old).
Primary education in Ukraine lasts for 4 years. (pupils from 6 to 10 years old)
Secondary schools ( 8)
After six years of primary education children take exams in core subjects and go to a secondary
school. Compulsory secondary education begins when children are 11 or 12 and lasts for 5 years.
Most children go to state comprehensive schools. Parents do not pay for their education. It is free.
There are also about 500 private schools in Great Britain. Most of these schools are boarding
ones, where children live as well as study. Education in such schools is very expensive, that's why
only 5 per cent of schoolchildren attend them. The most famous British private schools are Eton,
Harrow and Winchester. ( 9)
Stages of Education in Ukraine ( 10)
Primary (elementary) school the 1st-4th grades
Basic secondary school the 5th-9th grades
Upper secondary school 10th 11th grades
Secondary schools in Ukraine (11)
After primary education children take exams in core subjects and go to a secondary school.
Compulsory secondary education begins when children are 11 or 12 and lasts for 5 years.
Most children go to state comprehensive schools. It is free of charge. But its fee-paying in
the private ones.
School subjects in Ukraine ( 12)
Primary School:
Ukrainian, Math, I and Ukraine, Health and Body Care, Physical Education, Music, Drawing
and Handicrafts, Foreign Language (English, German, French, etc.)
Children start learning a foreign language in the 1st form in all secondary schools.

Basic Secondary School:


Ukrainian Language and Literature, English, German, Math, Geography, Health and Body
Care, Biology, Physics, History of Ukraine, Chemistry, Art, Music, Physical Education,
Handicrafts
Upper Secondary School:
Ukrainian Language and Literature, World Literature, English, German, Algebra, Geometry,
Geography, History of Ukraine, World History, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Physics,
Physical Education, Computer Science
English Secondary school children study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Art,
Geography, Music, a Foreign language and have lessons of Physical training. Religious education
is also provided. English, Mathematics and Science are called "core" subjects. At the age of 7, 11
and 14 pupils take examinations in the core subjects. ( 13)
After five years of secondary education, pupils take GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary
Education) examination. 60 % of children leave school and go to colleges for further education.
In Ukraine pupils take exams after 4th, 9th and 11th forms.
30 % of children leave school after 9th form and go to colleges for further education.( 14)
School year
The school year begins in September. It never begins on Monday. The English don't think it is
good to start a new thing on Monday, so school usually begins on the first Tuesday of September.
There are three terms in a school year. When the term is over, schoolchildren have holidays:
Christmas holidays - 2 weeks Easter holidays 2 weeks Summer holidays 6 weeks
In Ukraine the school year begins in September.
There are two terms in a school year. When the term is over, schoolchildren have holidays:
Autumn holidays - 1 week
Winter holidays 2 weeks
Spring holidays 1 week
Summer holidays 2 months ( 15)
School day
Pupils usually have five lessons five days a week. At four o'clock classes are usually over and
pupils go home.
Schools offer after school activities such as sports club (swimming, football, netball, etc.) ITC
(Information Technology) classes, book clubs, art clubs, drama and music.

In Ukraine pupils usually have 6 or 7 lessons five days a week.


At two or three o'clock classes are usually over and pupils go home. There some extra
school activities for kids. ( 16)
There is a long lunch break in the afternoon after the third lesson. Most children bring their
own packed lunch from home. A packed lunch usually consists of sandwiches, fruit, a drink and a
packet of crisps.
In Ukraine children have their lunch after second or the third lesson at school canteen or they
bring their own packed lunch from home. ( 17)
School uniform
Most schools in Britain require children to wear a school uniform.
Ukrainian pupils wear school uniform only in specialized schools. ( 18)

Every British school has its rules.
5. When pupils come to school they must behave properly. They must follow certain school rules.
Let's put these rules in the right order. The first groups will write down what pupils must do. The
second group will write down what pupils mustn't do. Your time is limit 4 minutes.

think about the situation: If I had a chance, what country I would choose to study at.
And try to answer the question: WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO STUDY IN GREAT
BRITAIN OR IN UKRAINE? ( 30)
10. Most of you said you would like to study in Ukraine. Thats why I would like to suggest you
to think and talk about your attitude to school

Dear friends! Today we have had a very interesting discussion on the topic" Education in
Great Britain and Ukraine". You have got to know many interesting and important things about
education in different countries. The results of your discussion of the problem show that you know
the material on the topic rather well. You used all necessary lexical and grammatical material,
your discussion of the problem was according to the rules. Besides, the discussion showed who
knows the theme better and who needs more working on the theme. The topic united you all and I
hope that discussion of any problem will be a habitual thing for you.
