HOW TO RESOLVE INDIAN

RAILWAYS WAITING TICKET

PROBLEM
VARUN CHITRANSH
(Research Scholar-IIT Delhi)

Problem Statement
Today, providing a confirmed ticket to each
passenger in trains is a challenging task.
Also from passenger point of view, getting a
confirmed ticket is a very difficult task to do.
To get a confirmed ticket, a preplanning of
journey is required by passenger, which is
not practically possible by all the passengers
all the time.

Problem Statement
Currently almost all the trains are running
with hundred plus unconfirmed reserved
tickets.
The condition is similar in almost all trains
in India.
These unconfirmed tickets are causing
trouble to passenger as well as are
economically harmful for railway.

Existing Solutions
Solutions provided by Railways,
Announcing new trains regularly,
Tatkal Ticketing system,
Premium tatkal system,
Addiing extra coaches to trains.

Existing Solutions
Solutions adopted by Passengers,
Long line in tatkal,
Confirmed ticket arrangement through TTE,
Black-ticket through agents,
Travelling without confirmed ticket and
paying fine(not getting seat, paying more
amount through penalty),but the passenger
does this all because his journey is very
important.

DOES THESE SOLUTIONS

REALLY WORK..?
Almost all tatkal tickets are booked within 15
minutes.
There is still a long queue of passengers with
unconfirmed tickets.
A very large number of unconfirmed reserved
tickets are cancelled daily.
Unnecessary rush at platforms in hope of
getting a seat through TTEs.
Passengers reach to platform much before the
actual time of train departure in hope to get a
confirmed seat anyhow thus unnecessary rush
at railway stations.

PROPOSED SOLUTION
Over-view
Almost all the trains have 15 to18 reserved
coaches. Each coach has around 9 side lower
berths.
So each train have around more than 150 side
lower berths which are reserved for around 150
passengers.
Two passengers can very comfortably seat
together on one side berth.
If each side berth is reserved for two
passengers then immediately each train will
start carrying around extra 150 passengers
without any further investment in Railways.

PROPOSED SOLUTION
Convert all the side lower berths in two
seating berths.
Instead of one full seat, book two half seats
at side lower berths.
Keep the half seat fare 60% less than the
full berth reservation fare.
Give priority to book half seats for short
distance passengers.

PROPOSED SOLUTION
Promote the youngsters and students to
prefer booking a half seat instead of a full
seat while travelling in Indian Railways.
Promote this scheme specially among
youths & students. Make them realize that
by booking a half berth they are helping
someone needful.

Impact of Proposed Solution

Generation of around 150 seats in each train
which is normally equal to the number of
unconfirmed tickets in any train.
Passenger comfort in getting confirmed
ticket.
Economical journey option for passengers.
Reduction of unnecessary rush from
platforms.

Impact of Proposed Solution

A large revenue generation for railways
without any investment.
When every passenger will get a confirmed
ticket, the corruption involved in trains by
TTEs for berths will drastically reduce.
Thank You!
