Certificate in Screenwriting
The Certificate in Screenwriting has been designed to teach students the
craft of telling stories in pictures, thereby transforming students from movie
watchers to movie writers. Participants learn about structure, characterization, and dialogue, as well as screenplay format, scene-writing techniques,
and revision. By the time their studies have concluded with a one-on-one
master class, Screenwriting Certificate students have a polished screenplay
that is suitable for submitting to agents and contests. Students may take
courses that focus on writing for films, television, and short films.
Online courses include text-based lectures; assignments submitted directly to
the instructor for personalized feedback; and message boards for workshopping classmates screenplays, discussing treatments, and sharing a common
love for the art of screenwriting. Some courses also give students and the
instructor the opportunity to meet in real-time through video chat.
This certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete the three
required courses and electives equivalent to 20 sessions, one of which must
be a Screenplay Workshop. Courses are offered throughout the academic
year but not necessarily every semester. Formoreinformation, email
sps.libarts@nyu.edu.
