Experiment No. 2: The Simple Pendulum

I. Abstract:
A pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely. When a
pendulum is displaced sideways from its resting equilibrium position, it is subject to a restoring
force; after it reaches its highest point in its swing, gravity will accelerate it back toward the
equilibrium position. When released, the restoring force combined with the pendulum's mass
causes it to oscillate about the equilibrium position, swinging back and forth. For this
experiment, an improvised simple pendulum was made using metal rings of different weights
suspended on a meter stick using a yarn and using these different factors were measured and
tabulated. First was the effect of amplitude on the period wherein it shows that there is a
significant increase in the amplitude upon the increase of energy however its period will remain
the same. Second, effect of the mass of the bob on the period with results and conclusions are the
same as the first effect and Third the effect of the length of the pendulum on the period. The
results are then listed on the tables, with each result recorded separately. Also the acceleration
due to gravity on a location in the earth with 1.50 m long simple pendulum and 100 vibrations in
246 seconds can be solved and would result to 4.96 x 10-5 m/s2. And through the results tabulated
it can therefore be concluded that amplitude, mass and length are all directly proportional to the
period it takes to restore the pendulum back into its position.

II. Questions and Answers:

1. Using your groups data obtained from the experiment (refer to the last table of the
experiment), graph the length of a pendulum and the square of its period (In your graph, the
length (in cm) of the pendulum must be x and the square of the period (in sec 2) as y). Determine
the relationship that exists between the length of a pendulum and the square of its period.

2. What are the factors affecting the period of a simple pendulum?

ANSWER:
Three factors affecting the period of the simple pendulum are the mass of the bob, the length of
the string and the frictional force present upon each sway of the string.

3. What must you do to the length of a simple pendulum for its period to double?
ANSWER:
The period of the oscillation depends on the square root of the string length, so in order to double
its period the string length should become four factor larger so as to make the values and results
synonymous.

4. Determine the acceleration due to gravity in a location where a simple pendulum
