Introduction
Thank you for choosing OHAUS product. Please read the manual completely before using
the STARTER 300D portable DO (Dissolved Oxygen) meter to avoid incorrect operations.
The STARTER 300D has an excellent performance/price ratio and is designed with many useful
features. Other accessories are also available from OHAUS.
You will find much helpful functionality in this meter. A few of the many existing features are:
1.1
Safety measures
When using chemicals and solvents, comply with the instructions of the
producer and the general lab safety rules.
FCC Note: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A
digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide
reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a
commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency
energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause
harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is
likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the
interference at his own expense.

One unique design feature of the STARTER 300D is the integrated stand as shown, which can be
pushed out to use the meter at the table.
3.1
Calibration
3.1.1
Zero-oxygen solution
The STARTER 300D allows you to perform 1-point, 2-point calibrations; normally 1-point calibration
is enough for the measurement. The 2-point calibration which is rarely to perform must be run in a
zero-oxygen solution.
Make a zero-oxygen solution: put about 20ml pure water or deionized water into the bottle of DO
Zero Oxygen Chemical, stirred for more than 5 minutes. Then the solution is zero-oxygen solution.
3.1.2
Before performing calibration, you must enter the correct barometric pressure in the meter (see
4.1). The barometric pressure is different in difference place, especially different altitude. WRONG
barometric pressure may perform WRONG calibration.
Normally the DO electrode only need to perform 1 point calibration in the air (or Oxygen-saturated
water). Before calibration you need to rinse the DO electrode by pure water and clean the water
with tissue.
The meter reaches endpoints according to the Endpoint Mode, 100% display.
Then you have 3 choices:
Press button-Read to finish 1-point calibration, slope and offset are shown on the display
3.1.3
Place the electrode in the zero oxygen solution and press button-Cal
Press and hold button-Cal can display the last calibrate data when in measurement screen.
3.2
Sample measurement
Dissolved oxygen readings can display unit of ppm, mg/L or %. You can choose the unit
according your disciplines or application by press button-Mode when on measurement screen.
When measure the sample, should note:
o
The sample must be stirred;
o
Make sure the minimum water flow rate is 5 cm/second across the electrode membrane.
Then
3.3
Temperature measurement
For better accuracy, we recommend the use of the temperature probe. If a temperature probe is
used, ATC and the sample temperature are displayed on the display.
If the meter does not detect a temperature probe, it automatically switches to the manual
temperature compensation mode and MTC appears. MTC temperature should be set. (See 4.3)
Note: The meter only accepts NTC 30 k temperature sensor.
3.4
3.4.1
Storing a reading
The STARTER 300D can store up to 30 measurement endpoint readings. Press button-Store when
the measurement reaches endpoint. M01 indicates that one result has been stored.
If you press button-Store when M30 is displayed, FUL indicates the memory is full. To store
further data you will have to clear the memory (see below).
3.4.2
Press and hold button-Recall for 3 seconds recall the stored values from memory when the
current measurement reach endpoint.
Press button-up or button-down to scroll through the stored results. R01 to R30 indicates which
result is being displayed. Press button-Exit to go back to the measurement screen.
3.4.3
Continue pressing button-up or button-down to scroll through the stored results until MRCL
appears. Then press button-Read, CLr blinks. Press button-Read again to confirm the deletion or
press button-Exit to return to the measurement mode without deleting all the data in the memory.
Setup
4.1
For calibration and measurements, the actual barometric pressure is very important, since it
influences the dissolved oxygen value. Make sure entering the CORRECT barometric pressure
before measurement and calibration (see 3.1.2).
4.1.1
The meter can display units among mbar(milibar), hPa(hectopascal) and mmHg(millimeter
mercury).
4.1.2
After the setting of barometric pressure unit, the value of barometric pressure displays,
4.2
Since salinity has an influence on the dissolved oxygen value, it is important to enter the correct
salinity value. The meter can compensate salinity for measurements in solutions with salinity from
0 to 50 ppt. The default value for salinity is 0.0 ppt, which can be changed by the following
procedure:
After the setting of barometric pressure value, the salinity value is displayed.
Press button-Read to confirm the value or press button-Exit to return to the measurement
screen.
Normally the seawater salinity is 35ppt, which means 35g salt among 1000g seawater.
4.3
4.3.1
After confirming the salinity value, the temperature unit appears on the display.
Press button-Read to confirm the temperature unit you selected or press Exit to go back to
the measurement screen.
Note:
C = 5/9 (F -32)
10
4.3.2
After confirming the temperature unit, the MTC temperature value appears on the display. .
4.4
After confirming the compensation temperature value, it goes to the powder auto-off or always on
setting.

Electrode maintenance
The DO sensor measures the oxygen based on galvanic principle. The DO electrode produces a
mV-output proportional to the oxygen concentration present in the sample. Oxygen diffuses
through the membrane and is being consumed at the cathode, producing an electrical current.
o
Although the amount of oxygen consumed is low, a new sample should still flow
12
Before and after use, rinse the sensor with clean pure water and wipe it with a soft
tissue.
When storing the sensor for a longer period, make sure it is placed in the wetting cap supplied in
the standard delivery. Also, deposits on the membrane should be removed with a tissue, because
they hamper the diffusion of oxygen through the membrane.
Note: The filling solution in the electrode cap is 10% NaCl (Sodium Chloride). Cleaning and filling
solutions should be handled with the same care as that given to toxic or corrosive substances.
5.4
Self-diagnosis
Press and hold button-Read and button-Cal simultaneously until the meter display the full
screen.
Each icon blinks one after the other. This way you may check whether all icons are correctly
shown. The next step is to check that the keys are functioning correctly. This requires user
interaction.
When b blinks, five icons are displayed.
Press the five keys one by one in any order. Each time you press a key an icon disappears
from the screen.
Continue to press the other keys until all the icons have disappeared.
When the self-diagnosis has been completed successfully, PAS appears. If self-diagnosis
fails, error message Err 1 appears.
Note: You have to finish pressing all five keys within two minutes, otherwise Err 1 appears and
you will have to repeat the procedure.
