3.First Weight Estimation

3.1Payload Estimation
Using a typical Air to Air weapon layout, assume no of external hard points = 12 (10 for missiles, 2 for
external fuel stores)
Table 3.1- Payload Specifications
Medium range air to air missiles ( AIM -120 AMRAMM
,R -77,ASTRAA or equivalent )
Short range air to air missile (AIM -9 Sidewinder, R -73 )

2 X 2000 L capacity

3200kg

Total estimated payload weight for Air Superiority mission = 6200 kg

Though the primary role of our aircraft is Air Superiority, to be able to perform ground attack missions
and even standoff missile carrier roles it needs to be able to carry heavier missiles like the K -100, K 59 or the Brahmos anti-ship missile as well as some small diameter light weight laser guided bombs.
Thus we have fixed the maximum payload weight of the aircraft at 8000 kg.
The weight of the single crew member is estimated at 100 kg.

3.2 Estimation of Gross weight (Wo)

For estimating gross weight, we plotted the empty weight to gross weight ratios (We/Wo) and fuel
weight to gross weight ratios (Wf/Wo) of different aircrafts. Using a linear fit to the plot we calculated
the average values of those ratios.
Results:

Average

= 0.5100

Average

= 0.2708

These average values were used to calculate the gross weight using the forlmula,
Estimated Payload and Crew weights of our aircraft are 8000 Kg and 100 Kg respectively.

3.3Conclusion
Using a Matlab code and data collected from internet, we have come to the conclusion that the gross
weight of the air superiority aircraft is 36,952 kg.
