CHAPTER FOUR

Personalities
Louis McIsaac (right) of Fairview has been
breeding and racing standardbreds through five
decades, and has been a long time consignor to
the PEI Colt Stakes Sale. He has bred the
winners of five Colt Stakes races including two
double winners in Royal Situation and Molzan
and most recently in 2008 with Comeback
Quick. Molzan was retained by Louis when
she failed to bring the minimum starting bid at
the 1991 PEI Colt Stakes Sale. She went on to
dominate the regional stakes, was the Maritime
Champion at both two and three, and was the
USTA District 10 Horse Of the Year in 1993.
Louis MacIsaac

Charlotte Ranch, tucked away in a beautiful

setting near Sussex, New Brunswick, was the
creation of Alfred Moeller (left). He stood
several successful stallions including Knightly
Blue Chip, a sire that moved colt stakes racing
ahead in short order by siring the first sub-2:00
Maritime bred two-year-old when Overnight
Storm went in 1:59.4 in an Atlantic Sires event
on the five-eights track in Moncton. Knightly
Blue Chip stands second in siring PEI Colt
Stakes winners with twenty including double
winner Charlottes Blues.
Alfred Moeller

Bert Haneveld emigrated from Holland in

1950. He worked all his life in the farming
industry as an apple and egg producer. In 1981
he bought his first yearling in Bayside Mickey
and gave him to his son-in-law Bill Hicken to
train. Bert won several PEI Colt Stakes events
including three in one year with Lubricant,
Solar Knight and D Js Amy in 1987, a first for
Colt Stakes action. He repeated with Solar
Knight the next year, as she set a new record
for three-year-old pacing fillies. Bert Haneveld

Morah Kerr, like many a young girl, started

off with a saddle horse competing at hunter
and jumping events. She spent several years in
Florida working for Fred Grant and for
Emmons MacKay back in Truro. She shared
ownership on a number of stakes winners with
Clare MacDonald including Island Tradition, a
double winner in 1998-99. Retained as a
broodmare, Island Tradition would produce
stakes winners in Super S Crosby in 2008 and
double winner Super Sidney C in 2005 and
2006. Morah also won in 2007 with her own
Imps Finesse, a Maritime Champion colt.
Morah is currently the President of the Atlantic
Standardbred Breeders and sits on the Nova
Scotia Racing Council.

RAISE A COLT
Personalities
Robert (Bob) E. Connelly has been involved
with Colt Stakes activities since the early
seventies. He was one of the proponents of the
first yearling sale and each year since he has
volunteered as a bid spotter as well as being on
the sale committee. He has a small breeding
operation that he calls RE’s Stable and the
youngsters bearing the RE’s name have been
prominent in Maritime stakes events including
RE’s Cloud, RE’s Queen Virgina, Colt Stakes
winner Incoming Storm and most recently
RE’s Mary, winner of the Atlantic Breeders
Crown for two-year-old pacing fillies in 2008.

Ratchford of North Sydney have raced horses
in the Maritimes, Ontario and the New
England States for almost fifty years. It is their
success in the Island Colt Stakes, however, that
is particularily noteworthy. For the last twenty
years the brothers have been fixtures at the
annual yearling sales and have had nine Colt
Stakes winners between them beginning with
Dave’s record setting win driving his own
Charlottes Buddy in 1990. John’s first of five
wins came with double winner Miss Flamingo
Too who won in 1997 and then also set a
record in 1998.

The Downey Stable was started in Saint John

by Milton Downey and continues today under
the guidance of his son Steven. Milton’s first
Colt Stakes win came in 1988 with his
homebred Dawn Down then in 1990 with
Philip Down and the colt Burden Of Freedom
purchased at the Island sale in 1988. The
Downey Stable has claimed five more PEI Colt
Stakes wins since, most recently with three-
year-old filly winner Emily J Down in 2008.

Doug Ferguson of Kilkerran Farms stood the

stallions Oil Count and Harrods and most
recently Lisryan. As a breeder he has produced
eight Colt Stakes winners, most notably triple
winner Kilkerran Fury and his full brother
Kilkerran Ingle. His best, as a breeder, is
Kilkerran Scot by Harrods, that has just
recently gone over $500,000 lifetime and is
now the third richest Maritime bred of all time.
Doug’s brother Jack was manager of the
Atlantic Sires Stakes program for many years.

RAISE A COLT
Personalities
Alexander Fraser, better known as Sandy, has
been a prominent owner of stakes winners for a
many years. He did extremely well with
purchases of the offspring of Willow Bird, a
New Brunswick based stallion, buying his
champion fillies Diplomat Katie, Some Nice
Friday and Some Nice Ketch, all Colt Stakes
winners, and then breeding his own Guy On
The Go by Willow Bird after purchasing the
sire from the dispersal of David Killeel’s stock.
Sandy enjoyed his victories immensely but was
quick to give the credit to his longtime trainer
and friend Russell Burgoyne.

breaking That’s My David and developed
several other stakes winners. A restaurant
owner in Fredericton, he maintained a
picturesque farm property north of that city
where he stood sires such as Easy Come Easy
Go and Willow Bird. He bred some of the best
stakes fillies of their day in Some Nice, a
stakes record holder, Some Nice Ketch, Some
Nice Friday and Diplomat Katie, all Colt
Stakes winners. Diplomat Katie produced her
own stakes winner in Diplomate Girl in 2007.

Robert “Bob” Dewar was a staunch supporter

of the Summerside Raceway and was track
superintendent among other roles. He was
never so proud as when the first sub 2:00 mile
was paced on PEI over “his” track. He and his
travelling companion Earl “Boomer” Cannon
were known as the Sunshine Boys and never
missed a regional meeting although there were
times when they missed the last ferry home.
The Island Breeders leg in Summerside for
three–year-old colts carries his name. Bob Dewar

Russ Doyle was a newspaper-man who wrote

a significant chapter in Colt Stakes history. He
purchased stakes winner Dexter’s Wine at the
PEI sale, then produced stakes winner Mitchell
Paul, a winner of almost $250,000 from her.
He also bought the full sister Dexters Jane who
set a stakes record at three on the way to
earning almost $300,000 lifetime. There were
two other winners in Dexters Dude and
Princess Kelleigh all with trainer Earl Smith.

June Coyle has likely paddocked more Colt

Stakes winners than any other groom. Working
exclusively for Joe Smallwood, she has cared
for most of his thirteen winners, including five
record setters, and probably several others
beside. It takes a special kind of person to look
after high performance horses and June has
been up to the task, doing her job with skill,
