Problem 1
An inward flow reaction turbine has external and internal diameters as 0.9 m and
0.45 m respectively. The turbine is running at 200 rpm and width of turbine at
inlet is 200 mm. The velocity of flow through the runner is constant and is equal to
1.8 m/s. The guide blades make an angle of 10 to the tangent of wheel and
discharge at the outlet of turbine is radial. Draw the inlet and outlet velocity
triangles and determine:

Problem 2:
A reaction turbine works at 450 rpm under a head of 120 m. Its diameter at inlet is
120 cm and the flow area is 04 m2. The angles made by absolute and relative
velocities at inlet are 20 and 60 respectively with the tangential velocity. Assume
whirl at outlet to be zero.
Determines:
a) The volume flow rate (5.21 m3/s),
b) The power developed (5272.40 kW),
c) Hydraulic efficiency (85.95%).

Problem 3:
As inward flow reaction turbine has external and internal diameters as 1.0 m and
0.6 m respectively. The hydraulic efficiency of turbine is 90% when the head on
turbine is 36 m. the velocity of flow at outlet is 2.5 m/s and discharge at outlet is
radial. If the vane angle at outlet is 15 and width of wheel is 100 mm at inlet and
outlet, determine:

Problem 4:
The external and internal diameter of an inward flow reaction turbines are 1.20 m
and 0.6 m respectively. The head on the turbine is 22 m and velocity of flow
through the runner is constant and equal to 2.5 m/s. The guide blade angle is given
as 10 and the runner vanes are radial at inlet. If the discharge at outlet is radial
determine:

The speed of the turbine (225.65 rpm)


The vane angle at outlet of the runner (19.42o) ,
Hydraulic efficiency (93.14%).

Problem 5:
233 liters of water per second are supplied to an inward flow reaction turbine. The
head available is 11 m. The wheel vanes are radial at inlet and the inlet diameter is
twice the outlet diameter. The velocity of flow is constant and equal to 1.83 m/s.
The wheel makes 370 rpm. Neglect the thickness of the vanes. Assume that the
discharge is radial and there are no losses in the wheel. Take speed ratio = 0.7.

Find:
a) Guide vane angle (10o 6),
b) Inlet and outlet diameter of the wheel (53.2 cm, 26.6 cm),
c) The width of the wheel at inlet and exit (7.62 cm, 15.24 cm).

Problem 6:
The following data is given for a Francis turbine. Net head H=60 m; speed N= 700
rpm; shaft power = 294.3 kW; o = 84%; h =93%; flow ratio = 0.20; breadth ratio
n = 0.1; outer diameter of runner = 2 inner diameter of runner. The thickness of
vanes occupies 5% of circumferential area of the runner, velocity of flow is
constant at inlet and outlet and discharge is radial at outlet. Determine:
