Imagine unlimited access to information at speeds that make file size

irrelevant. Imagine high-definition voice and video transmitted wirelessly to
the latest smart mobile devices. Welcome to the TD-LTE futurebrought
to you today by Nokia Networks.
These are the scenarios mobile operators envision as they plan a transition to 4G while
continuing to improve their 3G networks. To bring these scenarios to reality, operators need a
natural and easy solution to support the growing demand for mobile data services.

TD-LTE brings mobile networks beyond 4G services

Long-Term Evolution (LTE) or Time Division-LTE (TD-LTE) make the true mobile broadband
experience a reality by delivering multi-megabit data with virtually no latency. TD-LTE allows
operators to introduce exciting new services more efficiently, including HD video blogging and
video on demand, as well as media mobility, online gaming, and more.
TD-LTE also gives operators a significantly improved business proposition with increased
capacity, lower cost per bit, spectrum flexibility, media mobility, a flat IP architecture, and endto-end Quality of Service (QoS).
Because the vast majority of the LTE and TD-LTE standards are common, Nokia Networks uses
the same platforms for both technologies. As an example, the Nokia Networks Flexi Multiradio
10 Base Station for TD-LTE is based on our field-tested and reliable Flexi Base Station platform,
which is deployed in hundreds of mobile networks worldwide.

Key benefits of TD-LTE

Greater capacity and lower cost per bit: With high data rates and high capacity for data and
HD voice, TD-LTE provides significant improvements for the subscriber experience and for
the operator, at a much lower cost per bit compared to legacy technologies.
Simple architecture: TD-LTEs Evolved Packet Core is IP centric and technology agnostic,
allowing operators to provide common applications and services across other wireless access
technologies.

Spectrum flexibility: TD-LTE offers high levels of spectrum flexibility with the ability to
deploy in a number of spectrum bands and a spectrum bandwidth that easily scales up to
100MHz. The TD-LTE spectrum bandssuch as band 41 (2.6GHz), band 42 (3.5GHz), and
band 40 (2.3GHz)have large continuous spectrum, which allows for easier roaming, high
capacity, and exceptionally high user throughputs with features like carrier aggregation. This
flexibility makes TD-LTE very well suited for deployments by operators in both developed and
emerging markets.
Download/Upload adaptability: TD-LTE spectrum is an unpaired spectrum, which means
operators have the option of allocating additional bandwidth for download or upload based
on consumer trends and business models. This adaptability helps to improve the user
experience and ensure more efficient use of costly spectrum.
Nokia Networks is uniquely positioned to deliver TD-LTE solutions thanks to years of experience
in mobile broadband innovation. Our commitment to TD technology and LTE market leadership
has brought Nokia Networks multiple awards, including a top ranking by Gartner.

What is TD-LTE?
TD-LTE, also known as Time Division Duplex LTE (TDD LTE), refers to the air interface
defined by 3GPP in its Release 8 Specification set for the unpaired spectrum. TD-LTE gives
users a personal media experience similar to that of fixed-line broadband in terms of
bandwidth and latency. With TD-LTE, applications that previously were delivered only on
fixed lines are now available over the air and support full mobility. A comprehensive TD-LTE
ecosystem allows operators to benefit from innovative applications that help increase
revenues and competitive advantage.

Device ecosystem supports TD-LTE rollout

TD-LTE will be the technology of choice for most mobile operators given that spectrum is
available for 60% of the world population and 50% of the land mass. According to The Global
Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) July 2014 report, more than 100 operators have invested in
TD-LTE. Multi-band, multi-mode LTE-TDD smartphones, tablets, dongles, and CPE (e.g., routers)
are already commercially available from all major chipset and device manufacturers.

3 / 12

Nokia Solutions and Networks 2014

The GSA report also indicates that the number of available LTE-TDD devices increased by five
times since March 2013, for a total of 530 devices. Bands 38 (2.6 GHz) and 40 (2.3 GHz) have
the largest ecosystems of user devices and device availability for other bands is also growing.
Several LTE-TDD smartphones have been launched by all major manufacturers and most offer
dual-mode (FDD and TDD) smartphones.

Proof is in the performance

TD-LTE makes existing applications faster and enables a wealth of new applications that
were previously available only on a wired broadband connection. Compared to wired,
TD-LTE is truly mobile. Its about personal media, with the ability to access content, share
it, and take it with you wherever you go. For operators, TD-LTE provides excellent
spectrum flexibility, significant added capacity, and a platform for delivering premium
applications cost effectively in both developed and emerging markets
Heres what TD-LTE delivers:

Migrating from WiMAX to TD-LTE-Advanced

Many operators are considering how to migrate their WiMAX networks. TD-LTE-Advanced
enables an evolution towards true 4G performance.
For TD-LTE-Advanced migrations, Nokia Networks has enhanced its broad portfolio of TD-LTE
1.9GHz, 2.3GHz, and 2.6GHz radios with the worlds first 3.5GHz carrier aggregation capable
radio, and added many TD-LTE-Advanced features including UL_COMP software for a better
upload experience at the cell edge compared to WiMAX, and the first Transmit Mode 9 (TM9)
beamforming commercial software for a better download experience compared to the previous
TM8 beamforming technique.
These offerings give WiMAX operators a compelling solution to help them migrate from WiMAX
to TD-LTE-Advanced networks. By taking advantage of Nokia Networks expertise, operators can
reuse the majority of their infrastructure investment, while enhancing their network with new
features, capacity and, most importantly, support for the latest smartphones and tablets that
will attract more subscribers.
Coexistence of WiMAX and TD-LTE presents the significant challenge of mitigating interference
between systems. The Nokia Single RAN Advanced Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station for TDD and
FDD not only helps operators in mitigating interference but also allows smooth migration to TDLTE-Advanced and helps them be ready for TDD-FDD carrier aggregation.
Additionally, a smooth transition from WiMAX to TD-LTE-Advanced requires careful analysis of
the operators infrastructure to guarantee the continuation and improvement of service quality.
Nokia Networks Global Services enable WiMAX operators to modernize their networks and make
a seamless transition to TD-LTE in a turnkey approach.

TDD-FDD Carrier Aggregation

TDD-FDD carrier aggregation gives operators large FDD coverage and high TDD capacity for very
high throughput as well as load balancing between TDD and FDD. The 3GPP standards-based
Nokia Networks TD-LTE-Advanced technology, along with Nokias Single RAN Advanced Flexi
Multiradio 10 Base Station for TDD and FDD, will allow smooth expansion with FDD-LTE for even
better capacity, coverage, and roaming benefits.

Worlds first live TV broadcast via TD-LTE. On January 5,

2013, China Mobiles TD-LTE network transmitted a live
video stream of the Xiamen International Marathon to the
television centers of China Central TV and Xiamen TV for
live broadcast. The TD-LTE network, built solely by Nokia
Networks, exceeded required parameters to transmit HD
video and images, provided the best live TV experience,
and matched a relay via satellite with a zero bit-error rate.
Marathons are certainly not easy to televise as runners speed over a long distance through
dense urban areas. In spite of the increased demand for network capacity with exceptional
traffic and load conditions, there was no degradation in network performance, no packet loss,
and no delay during the 2.5-hour live transmission. A stable uplink throughput of 5 Mbps
ensured perfect video quality for millions of viewers worldwide. This technological feat ushers in
a new era for outdoor TV broadcasting using LTE.
Seeing is believing at MWC. Nokia Networks configured a live TDD/FDD LTE offloading and load
balancing demonstration network in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress-2013. During the
demonstration, visitors witnessed how a heavily loaded network, either FDD or TDD, could be
effectively and accurately offloaded to a lightly loaded network using a patented base station
software algorithm.
CSFB over commercial TD-LTE network Delivered. Bharti Airtel, a leading global
telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, selected
Nokia Networks to deploy TD-LTE and its Circuit Switched Fall Back (CSFB) voice solution in the
